That's awesome! I'm glad it helped you get started. I've added additional reinforcement to mine after a flash-flood issue that washed it out, but last year I grew zucchini, cucumbers, cantaloupe, okra, squash, and potatoes in the 2 no-dig beds I have so far. I'm about to add 2 more this year!

I'm sorry HOAs can be so difficult. I have one subscriber who is only allowed to install wooden raised beds due to her homeowner association. We don't have that problem in our village fortunately.

Sounds amazing, had no idea this could exist. I have a small green square patch that I nearly gave up on. Intentionally I was going to use it for growing food. I grew my own grass but it got to become a nuisance. Now I want to go back to my original idea of growing food there. How long do I need to leave the carboard over the grass and weeds before sewing seeds? I understand you left your cardboard over your grass and weeds for 3 weeks.

I’m so happy for you! There is no need to wait after putting down the cardboard. I created another no dig garden after this one and sowed seeds 2 days later. Don’t use a manure compost though if you plan to plant directly because it will be too strong. Let me know if you have any other questions, and I’ll be happy to answer! Also, I did a one year later follow up video talking about lessons learned if you’re interested in that. Best wishes to you!

@@NowGardening that is great to know that I don't need to wait. What is the best soil to plant? Regular soil? I am intending on making a multi garden with different vegetables and fruit and split them up and do a walkway in the middle. I am very excited.

That sounds amazing! I buy a garden soil made for an organic vegetable garden. It has rich compost added in already. It’s a French brand though and only available here, but you should be able to get good quality soil or compost from your local garden store. I hope to hear about your garden once it’s completed and you’re growing there. Good luck!

If you’re putting 4x4 and the soil is about level, do you mean you put around 10 inches before you compact it a little? The cardboard is installed, Just have to figure out how much compost I need! Thanks for the video :)
@NowGardening
@NowGardening 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching and asking questions. After compacting it, it was only around 6 inches deep. Depending on what you want to grow, this may or may not be deep enough. After a year of gardening there, I found that it was deep enough for cucumbers, tomatoes, cantaloupe, okra, and greens but not deep enough to get full grown potatoes or onions. I hope this helps!

Thank you for this great video. The problem I came across when I did this, was my cardboard all had cancer warnings on it which made me ditch this idea, unfortunately. Is cardboard usually chemical free and able to be used in an organic garden? I’m hoping to keep everything as organic as possible. Any help with this problem would be appreciated. Thank you.
@NowGardening
@NowGardening 11 ай бұрын
That's frightening! According to my research, the US Dept of Agriculture permits cardboard use in certified organic gardens as long as it's plain, unwaxed boxes with all tape and sticky labels removed and with minimal printing on the outside and not treated with fungicides. In addition, the National Center for Appropriate Technology completed many studies on the risks of toxicity due to the glues, inks, etc. and determined that it not considered risky. I've also read articles from several universities advocating the use of cardboard too. I hope this helps you decided if it's right for you, but please do stay away from any cardboard with cancer warnings.

Maybe a silly question, but will the potatoes grow through the cardboard? You are planting right into the compost? Thank you! Great video
@NowGardening
@NowGardening 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nicole, that's not a silly question at all! The cardboard does not disintegrate fast enough for any roots to go through in one season. I ended up harvesting these potatoes early as "new" potatoes following a cold snap last year, but I grew okra and cucumbers here throughout the summer. I'm expanding my no dig area this year, and the one thing I will do differently is to make it slightly deeper and spread the potatoes out a little more. I grew other potato crops in the summer in my raised beds and they seemed to get bigger much faster with more room! I hope this helps!

I'm just now finding this video. Could this be done with weed barrier and garden soil?
@NowGardening
@NowGardening 2 ай бұрын
It could, but you’ll only be able to grow crops that have shallow roots because they won’t have anywhere to go. That said, i experimented with tomatoes one year with a hard cardboard barrier and the roots spread out horizontal instead of down. I didn’t have bountiful harvests though, so I wouldn’t recommend it.

Did you create the terrace levels in your garden?

I did not and they’re starting to cave in in certain spots. We were told that the original owners built them for grapevines to make homemade wine back in the 1980s.

Do you have any recommendations for getting rid of sugar ants?
@NowGardening
@NowGardening Жыл бұрын
If you currently have crops planted where the ants are, the only organic solution that works is diatomaceous earth. It's not simple because you have to reapply it after it gets wet. This next one will sound cruel, but it works. If you don't have anything planted there, want to avoid pesticides and solve the problem fast, you can pour boiling water on the nest. You do it a second time 2-3 days later. Other than these two methods, I haven't found anything non-chemical that works.

Hello. Can i make this on the floor like cement?
@NowGardening
@NowGardening 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Suhaiza. I haven't tried it, but it seems like it could work. When the soil is deep enough, the plants' roots never reach the ground underneath the no-dig bed. The main problem I think you would have is water drainage. Make sure you have a place for the water to run off or you will have a huge mess or a waterlogged garden. I would love to hear how it works out if you decide to do it.

Ideally, I make my no-dig bed on a day that’s not windy. I also wet the cardboard which makes it heavier. If it is windy, I weight with bricks or rocks on the edges until I’m ready to add the soil. Hope this helps!

Can you use topsoil instead of compost?
@NowGardening
@NowGardening 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I’ve made no dig beds using bags of universal soil from the garden store, and this year I have even made one using only soil from a local tree farm. Every non-dig bed I’ve made so far has thrived, although some soils work better for certain vegetables than others. I hope this helps!

Can I just plant seeds I don't have plants yet.
@NowGardening

Absolutely. This week I planted cantaloupe, cauliflower, and onion seeds in my newest no-dig bed. Seeds are easy to start outside this time of year as long as it's not too dry. For best results, keep the soil damp until they sprout 👍🏻
