HOW TO START A PORTRAIT PAINTING IN ACRYLIC AND BLENDING COLORS ON PAPER BY DEBOJYOTI BORUAH

In this video I am showing how to start a portrait painting in acrylic and blending colors on paper. I am using water as the only medium. No retarder is used for this painting process.
I have started this painting with a coat of Scarlet lake, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Umber and Ultramarine Blue . I have applied many thin layers to achieve the desired effect of the skin tone. Most of the blending is done with dry brush technique with minimal water on the palette.

I had no idea people had so much purple, red and yellow underlying tones. Also I have been told you should never use black out of a tube, that you should make it yourself. Now I see why-it would change the vitality of the portrait. Thanks so much for telling which brushes you use and showing exactly how you do each step. I also had no idea that kind of background was achieved with a sponge roller. Learned a lot! Thanks.

I like to hold my brush from a distance. That's why I use mostly long handle brushes. Only for details I use short handle one. It depends on your requirements and style of work. Thank you for watching 😊

you are so skilled, and it's great to see detailed portrait works in acrylics, many people think it's too hard since the paint dries so fast. btw you don't prime the paper before laying the first colors down?

Yes, Acrylic is a very versatile medium. And the beauty is it's quick drying nature itself. I don't usually prime my paper. But sometimes I do on canvas for added smoothness. Thank you so much for your appreciation 🙏 Have a nice day 😊🎨

Thank you so much for your appreciation 🙏 I mostly use A3 or A4 size paper and for canvas it varies on the subject. 12 x 16 inches canvas is mostly used for demonstration purposes. Have a nice day 😊🎨

You did this painting on acrylic paper , did you apply gesso on it before you started painting? Thanks for sharing and as always your paintings are very realistic

I don't use gesso for my acrylic paintings on paper. Try to use 400gsm dedicated Acrylic papers. It works wonders. Or you can use 300 gsm watercolor paper. Thank you.

When you use bristle brushes on paper , doesnt it rip off the paper or tear down paper you are painting on ? Just curious

It doesn't. But more vigorous use may rip off some. Use dedicated 400 gsm acrylic papers. It will not effect.
