How to Start a Pressure Washing Business in High School or College

In this video you’re going to learn exactly how to start a pressure washing business in High School or College.
Here’s what I’ll cover:
First, you’ll learn what a beginner equipment setup looks like and what you’ll need. It’s no secret that there’s no need to drop thousands of dollars on a business that you may find out isn’t for you. With that said, equipment can make all the difference in this industry.
I’ll then walk you through my pricing model and how I was able to charge $20 as young as 14 years old. You can be your own boss and make more than minimum wage no matter how young!
Next, you’ll also learn what customer base and type of jobs are ideal, and why to target them when starting a pressure washing business.
The next strategy I’ll teach is how to creatively market yourself using multiple largely unused methods.
Finally, I’ll tell you my advanced equipment setup and pricing model that allow me to consistently make $50 an hour.

I’m glad you liked it! I didn’t register my company as a business but I would probably recommend it if you’re going to do it seriously. When I filed my taxes I just reported my earnings as an independent contractor and disclosed what I made excluding what I was paid on cash

I really want to start a small pressure washing business and do it during my senior year of HS, I just had questions about since I’m only doing things small, would I need a permit for it and did you still get business in the winter time to do it along side my other job I have

Do you think there is any pressure washer setup that would realistically fit on a bicycle? I have rear rack with a fairly large milk crate attached and also thought about using sorts of hooks to attach more lengthy equipment such as brooms.

To be honest it would be tough… I think you could definitely do it with an electric pressure washer though. A small bike trailer would definitely fit a residential gas one too. Anything has going on the bike would be difficult but possible!

Yeh good but remember undercut charging half is not fair as they have families to feed and properly set up businesses with employees and you do for quick cash probably living from home and no bills to pay. Imagine me going where you go and charging half of what you charge...

I'm 15 and I want to get into the pressure washing business but I was wondering if you needed a permit? I googled it and it said you needed to be 18 and have 4 years of journeyman experience. I live in California so the laws might be different here.

Do you need a specific car to put all that in. I have a Hyundai Ioniq and its got a decent amount of storage in the back but im not sure it would all fit. Also, do you recommend starting with the same or very similar equipment as what you started with?

I drive a truck which is perfect for this. If you're just starting out the first pressure washer I mentioned can easily fit into most any car although you will have to deal with dripping oil and water which could stain your seats. The second pressure washer I mention in this video is much bigger and heavier and you would likely need either a truck or a trailer to fit it all in. Finally, I would recommend starting with very similar equipment as I started with. You could find one's that are the same PSI and buy whichever is cheapest in your area!

What’s an average quote you would give someone for a driveway once you got to that point?

Great question. My average quote for a driveway hovers around $200 as I've found this is a really competitive price and allows me to meet my goal of making $50 an hour. As a general rule of thumb, you should always be increasing your price until you begin to lose customers though!

I would 100% recommend cash since that is not traceable by the government and you wouldn’t need to pay taxes on it. Do you have a bank account by chance?

how did you know what professional companies would usually charge? (wondering what criteria i should use to come up with a quote)

I would actually ask the customer when I begin the quote with, “do you mind me asking if you’ve had this pressure washed before?”. If they say yes I would ask what that person charged and then undercut it. This would give me a really good sense of the going market rates and help me price my services

I considered it and did hire a buddy for added help when I had too many jobs. I ultimately decided to focus more on my schooling though and to pursue other entrepreneurial ideas. My goal is for this KZfaq channel to become my full time hustle!

I know what that feeling is like… the beginning will be the hardest but if you’re consistent you’ll gain confidence and I promise you this will work out. Try and get some jobs from family and friends to practice your pitch and get your toes wet. It’s all uphill from there!!

I didn't worry about this but it's worth researching. In Oregon you don't have to be insured at all for pressure washing since it is considered home maintenance but it varies by state. I think the bigger concern is insuring yourself for injury on the job
