I started before CDs were readily available. I knew what I was looking for, in good condition at a sensible price. It took a while to find them, searching. It was worth the wait. In the late 80s early 90s they could be found. And what a joy it was to find them. Plus bargains with a seller who with respect didn’t know or envisage the true values.

never mentioned thrift shops, auctions, YARD SALES! ive bought right around 100 really awesome albums(atleast 60 from yard sales, 40 from thrift shops) in the past year and MAYBE spent 300 dollars. heck i went to 1 yard sale and was rifling through the box of records and when I asked the price the woman said they were free. i got 11 REALLY nice records out of that deal. ELO, Tull, Paul Simon, etc... also...forget what "pressing" they are unless youre only doing it to resell. just make sure the vinyl is in great shape and get a good cleaning kit. my "list" is whatever pops up and occasionally one that I REALLY want appears and I very quietly go BANANAS! no feeling like stumbling on an Abby Road or Sticky Fingers competely out of the blue!

I love the part you mentioned about putting together a list and, if you have it, going into local record shop and sharing the list. 9 times out of 10 that guy at the record shop will be able to look at that list and tell you in a heartbeat not only which albums/artist they have, but also which one you probably should just avoid initially because they are so crazy expensive and out of range...and of course the cross referencing because shop guys LOVE to tell you about "if you really like this band you should hear blah blah blah!" lol.

Your advice is good for newbies. I really like live albums on vinyl. So I have further narrowed my list down just by that one specification. If you haven't heard a live recording on your record player try one. It feels like your right there.

Great suggestion. I always love the advice of just telling newbies to go to a record store, if one is near, and just browse/ look around. Don't be in mindset to buy anything. Just take in the atmosphere, reminisce with some of the titles you see, and just enjoy and outing being surrounded by music. Most buying mistakes we make are done when we buy under pressure. This way the next time or two you come back to that store to actually purchase you will feel a bit more in place with it. Small think, but powerful I think,

Solid advice and points. I followed this model when I started 6 months ago. Value some will pay is by tastes in genres. I won't pay big money for an Ozzy or pearl jam record but I will for a jazz artist. Most jazz pressings are a hi quality product and package all the way around from sound to packaging. Currently I'm collecting from Bill Evans catalog. New and older pressings on LP.

I got into buying records at the age of 14 i got some money and went to the record shop and looked at some of the records until i came across a various artist record , I had heard most of the songs on my little transistor radio so that was the first LP record i bought . As the years went buy i would randomly just see a record shop and buy something most times . It was a happy time for me nothing scary about that whatsoever .

Do you have any suggestions on digitizing records? I i have a Rega P10, Gold Note P19 preamp and a bunch pf records' Sounds very nice, buy would like to have the option of listening to the songs on my 2nd system that doesn't have a turntable. However, the only phono preamps with a USB or other types of digital outputs I can find are cheap, no name brands on Amazon. Can you recommend better phono preamps with digital outs, say at least at the Parasound level of quality?

How to start a record collection in 2022: Step 1: Be independently wealthy. Step 2: Be willing to recognize that the color of the vinyl that a record is stamped into is irrelevant. The music is the important part. Step 3: Start with the stuff you like first, then get adventurous, eventually. Step 4: Garage sales are the best, most inexpensive place to start a record collection. The prices are usually reasonable at garage sales and while it's unlikely that you're going to find all your favorite titles, it's a place to start because when you're young and have no idea what you want, you can try a bit of everything and the price won't kill you (I remember when I started in the Nineties, the first records I got at a garage sale were For Ladies Only by Steppenwolf, After The Gold Rush by Neil Young, Iron Maiden's Live After Death, Jane's Addiction's "Stop"/"Three Days" 12'' single and Live At Folsom by Johnny Cash -- I still have most of them and I still remember that they came from garage sales, thirty years later); you can get an idea of what a record which has been cared for looks like as well as how badly mistreated they can be. That way, you'll understand how little it takes to damage a record and develop an eye for good copies and bad copies without breaking the bank on brand new stuff. Also, if you're choosy, you might be able to find some stuff at garage sales that you can trade for other titles at a new-and-used record store.

Do you usually buy new vinyl or do you also buy used vinyl? It seems like every time I get used vinyl sometimes it will skip just a little bit so I feel like I should invest more in new vinyl
@NTXVinyl

There’s honestly a skill to them both. But certainly buying anything pre-owned takes more effort, education and time to learn. I buy both. I don’t discriminate.
@johnwelch5132

A little skip, and a mean little, tiny, is bearable on a rare copy unavailable on any other format or reissue. As long as it’s listenable. I’m thinking late 60s early 70s LPs. If you love ‘em, they sound good, keep ‘em.

I like the budget point, it can be anything in life that needs a budget, records is one of those things were it's easy to get carried away. Mine would be: -Buy the records you like, go with your own taste. -Ignore 'must-haves'. In my opininon, there are no 'must-haves'. 'Must-haves' are for giving integrity to a collection you feel is not 'proper' yet or to wow people who only know about typical bands. You don't need to be another owner of a record from a classic band (Beatles, Maiden, Sabbath, Radiohead, etc, whatever 'classic band' means to you) By all means: _buy those records if you really want them_ - but there is nothing you 'must-have'. -Quality over quantity. Don't think you should be filling out your shelves so you can impress guests with your wall of records. You'll only end up with records you never play. I'd rather have 10 good than 500 shitty records. -learn (at least the basics) of maintaining and cleaning records and player. Not for being a snob, just to make sure you don't ruin your own favourite records. ( I have done so a few times and it suuuucks! :D ) -Buy new artists. New artists need support. YOU might end up with a potential future diamond because you bought that record that everyone overlooked at the time - Trust your instincts and your own taste!

One concept that seems to have been flooding the "communities", is the use/overuse of the word "vinyl", (yes we know they are made of that material). It's actually a modern trendy term for quite some time. They were always just called "Records", "LPs", etc, that's what they should be called for many many long time collectors and not so long time. I agree with that myself.

It’s an interesting thought. I learned from there being a turntable in my home as a small child, and even more so from my older brother that had records and a turntable. The reality is most households don’t have that these days, but kids/teens and young adults do have KZfaq, and that’s how they explore and discover new things. Times have changed. Obviously

Vinyl will die again. I just went to a number of stores and when I saw $32.00 and $34.00 I realized my days of purchasing records was over. As a young man I would go to the record store and purchased multiple albums at somewhere from $3.50 - $5.00 and I could leave with multiple selections. Sometimes I’d buy 5 or 6 albums at a time. Imagine trying to do that everyweek today! I’m telling you at these prices it won’t last.
@NTXVinyl

It will never “die”. It never did. It’s tiny niche of collectors, a little slice of the industry - and that’s just fine. But yes the prices of new records will turn some people away, and that’s unfortunate

I’d suggest first seeking advice from a friend or relative. If it sounds like something you still want to do, I would then suggest browsing a local record store with that person. If one doesn’t have a friend or relative into vinyl, go to the record store to look around, ask questions, and ask them to play a record you like on their system. After visiting a record store, I’d start looking into prices of turntable options. Here again, advice from a friend, relative, or record store employee would be most helpful. At this point a person would have enough basic info to make an informed decision on going any further. Here’s where making a list might fit into my suggested process. Personally, I would not introduce a beginner to Discogs for pressing research. IMO, 99% of people who have a record collection spent years buying and listening to records without needing or wanting to know how to read the deadwax, runouts, or identify differences between labels, jackets, and any inserts or printed sleeves. That stuff isn’t for beginners.
