HOW TO START A YAMAHA SR500 SAFELY

I once permanently injured my ankle starting an SR500 incorrectly (impatiently) so having one in the shop now inspired me to make this PSA on how and why it's so important to follow the starting procedure. You can also use the timing sight window but it's often hard to view. So here I outline and simple "by feel" method that is fool proof.

Dont lift up your leg after kicking down. Hold it all the way down until things stop or the engine is running. Thats how the anti kickback system works.

Yep, but that only can work if you follow all the other steps here. If you were to kick it with the piston right before it fires, it can kick back mid-kick, before you make it to the bottom of the kick. That's what happened to me before I learned the proper way.

@@oneupmotogarage well, I didnt mention the proper way because it was already being covered. I found most kick back issues were because of folks jabbing at the end rather than holding the lever down. I had a tt500 and I had a short learning curve on it and then there were no further issues. Folks would kick it as they did on a two stroke. When I bought my 80 sr 500, the owner stated one reason for selling it was because of the kick start issue. I jumped on it after the sale and kicked it to life in two tries. Still have it.

On the SR specifically, yes that's a great fail safe to double check that you're in the right spot.

ive had a 450 send my knee into my bars at mach yes, and almost broke my dads foot due to backfire. all i can say is im glad i didnt have a 500😂

Ive owned mine for 4 years now, I always wondered what was happening mechanically so thanks for the video. I do have a question, you know when you're getting ready to kick it and you've got the piston in the right spot that the kick lever makes clicks as you let it come up (like right before you kick it). Well I've noticed my bike only ever starts from cold if the kickstart lever makes 3 clicks on the way up (sometimes it just makes 2). Do you have any insight as to why thay may be? I hope Ive explained this well enough to be understood

The clicks are coming from a ratcheting one-way safety mechanism designed so you can move the kicker up and engage the engine when you move it down. It also acts to stop the kicker from engaging once the engine starts which is why if you hold the kicker at the bottom of the stroke after the engine starts you’ll hear the ratcheting sound there too. As for it being 2-3 clicks, you’ve just noticed a pattern in how many ratchet teeth the kicker passes on its way to the right position.

I've heard there is something different about the SR kickstart ratchet that makes it less likely to kickback compaired to XT and TTs I dont know if this is correct, but I've owned my second 1978 SR500 for nearly nine years and done over 80,000 kilometres on it and I think it kicked back once, or maybe twice I've also fitted a VM36 Mikuni to it and that carburettor was fitted when it did kick back Looking at the bike in this video I think it also has a VM36

Kick back sure stinks to the foot from an sr500, but have you ever had kick back from pull starting a 500cc polaris? Yanks youre whole scapula out. Ive had the pleasure to experience both now lol.

I didn’t know this as a 12 yr old starting a 500 and almost broke my leg. It kicked a hole in my boot and I couldn’t get off and rode it to the ground

I got away with that technique for about 11 years before I destroyed my ankle on a SR500 one fateful afternoon a few months ago. Which prompted me to make this PSA. Maniac kicking works until it doesn't.

That only is relevant to SR's but this video and process applies to all 4 stroke kick starts.

They all Yamaha SR XT TT 500cc have a window 🪟 on the camshaft right hand side of the head 🙄

The 1976 XT500 does NOT have a site glass window.

@James-dt7ky They aren't that hard to start. I have 4 of them and 1 has a high compression piston running on 98 octane petrol and it is easy to start and I'm 60 Maybe you should install the ladies electric starter from Germany or buy a box of tissues 🤣🤣

@@greglockyer4335 I've owned my '76 for 44 years and know very well how to start them. Looks like my correcting your comment got your panties in a twist Sweetie. BTW I'm 66....not sure how that matters though.
