I have to agree with Alexandeur Ross. Density of micros, specifically brassicas is going to cause dampening off and the yield will be very poor. Stacking trays helps the roots establish in good soil especially for Pea shoots and Sunflower shoots. Stacking, instead of covering the seeds with an additional layer of soil also gives a clean result to the micros for harvesting. Eliminating the need to wash them after harvest. You have the basics down but there are some nuances to getting the best results . Also using holes in the trays offers more even drainage in the tray. Placing a hole LESS tray underneath ensures better watering for those micros that prefer bottom watering as well. Microgreens are a great way to supplement winter veggie intake in any region, but most especially in areas where you can't grow food to it's maturity. The nutrition of microrgreens vs. mature plants is also a big consideration for those who are looking to eat 'cleaner' and with more vitamin and mineral intake. As a commercial grower of microgreens and other vegetables I'm always interested in learning and educating others. Thanks for the Video. Good luck with your micro endeavors.

Great advice. We put a paper towel on top of our seeds and moisten it before we stack to save getting seeds on the bottom of the upper tray.

I let my broccoli, cauliflower, & greens go to flower for the bees, then I can use the seeds for micro greens, since they are all cross-pollinated, mystery seeds.

Thanks Luke. I bought a small green house with 4 shelves in on clearance at Biglots for $12.00 and 4 72 cell flats and put it in a spare bedroom and I will grow microgreens every winter from now on. our ancestors got out every spring to hunt for wild greens to eat. Spring tonic they called it. Now We can eat fresh greens all winter. Stephen.

Just curious, how many seeds do you use in a 20 tray rotation? It's interesting the idea of rotating the crop through the cycle of the trays during the winter months. We usually plant in the raised beds out in the open, and utilize the seeds to cover a larger area. But interesting to plant close together to support the seedlings. Thanks for sharing!

Whoa! If you plant 2 full sized trays every 2 days you are going to have more micros than 2 adults can possibly eat! I grow micros as a side business, many are only at their best for a few days to a week before they need to be cut and stored. Sunflowers for example get tough and fuzzy, and small ones get mould. As growing in such crowded conditions does increase the risk of mould, you might want to consider adding a fan for air circulation and either soaking your seeds or spray watering them with a weak solution of hydrogen peroxide.

We grow in 5"x 5" trays for sale as fresh produce. We charge $4.50 per tray and we sell out every weekend at farmers markets. The trays we use are very inexpensive and can be easily recycled by the buyer.

I was waiting for this video. Last winter I tried sprouts. I was disappointed because the seed coats would be mixed among the sprouts like pieces of sand! When you said you were going to be growing micro greens, I thought "Hmmm. I'll wait till he starts and follow along!" With micro greens, maybe the seed coats will fall off and not be mixed in the harvested portion. So I will set a small tray of one of my sprout seeds right now.

Hey Luke, my husband and I are considering growing microgreens this winter because we live in Ohio and can't garden outside. The question that I have for you is that I have heard there is a danger with microgreens of salmonella and e.coli. Is that a real problem and what if anything do I need to do to prevent that.

Feel like microgreens aren't wasteful because it's high-density nutrition that you can put on just about any food in easily one tenth of time. Plus if you're growing your own seeds anyways you should be leaving a couple plants every season to get to seed, and most gardeners that do their own seeds have a surplus anyways

I really appreciate you describing what exactly a flat was.. that question drove me crazy just about a week ago, but got the basic idea after much wasted time. You helped me understand it much more clearly. Also, i feel that is extremely important the idea that you should not allow yourself to rely solely on grocery stores (& fast food for some) because they decide everything you have access to. I hope you understand the bigger problem here is Capitalism though. Thank you for all of your knowledge

Eating corn is wasteful! You could grow an entire plant out of each kernel!!! Come on people, making microgreens is, practically speaking, consuming the seeds from last harvest as a consumable food after "boiling it" in dirt without heat for a while. It's no different then consuming corn instead of planting it. Just because you don't plant broccoli for it's seed to grow into microgreens but for it's florets, doesn't mean somebody else is wasteful for consuming their plant in this manner... Or you are wasteful for consuming the flowering head instead of letting it go to seed to produce a ton of other plants...
