For its evergreen leaves that are utilised in Pooja/religious celebrations and as a chewing stimulant, betel leaf is produced in tropical and subtropical regions. In the southern areas of India, namely in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, betel leaf is produced as a cash crop. As a result, the net earnings from a betel leaf farm on a single acre are around Rs. 4.85 lakhs. However, the farmer must continue properly managing and caring for the betel or pan leaf farm.
Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Odisha, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Maharashtra are among the states that grow betel leaves. The three states of Karnataka, Kerala, and Assam collectively account for more than 85% of the betel nut's output. Betel leaf was initially known as ""green gold."" But betel growing is no longer profitable for farmers. In addition to poor demand, growing input costs, particularly those associated with irrigation, deter breeding betel growers.
