I had to learn all of this a few months ago. It's really a daunting task to figure out how comics work, especially coming from a manga mindset where everything has a chronological order and a set start/end point. Thank you for making this! It's sure to help a lot of people facing the same confusion I faced earlier this year!

I started by reading Wolverine (character I liked from films), then I learned about his villains, hero team ups, his fight with Hulk, then I read Hulk, then I read Avengers, it just branched out naturally as a lot of these things are intertwined and overlap. You'll discover new characters just from reading about other ones.

One thing I will mention is that for these characters that have been running for a long time, you don't need to read everything to know whats going or to enjoy the character. I for example love Daredevil and Batman, have I read a lot for both? Yes, but have i read everything these characters have ever been in? Oh dear god in heaven no

I grew up on comics like Batman, Flash, Spiderman, and X-Men, and I recently started to get interested in comics again after a long lapse. I felt very overwhelmed and just kinda grabbed a handful of random books featuring the characters I like, but this approach makes so much more sense. Focus on the work of the artists and the writers who are making the story enjoyable and follow their work and runs. I’m going to give this a try and see where it goes! Thanks for making such a helpful and informative video on this topic.

thank you for making this video. every other video I've found on the subject essentially boiled down to top ten comic lists rather than explaining from the ground up not only the concepts of runs, but also suggestions on how to continue to read and explore comics /on your own/, which is what I always struggled with All these comics felt so huge and scary to read before, but your kind way of speaking and gentle encouragement has finally gotten me to try reading the Tom King's run of Mister Miracle. I've heard before that I should read a lot of other comics to fully appreciate it and such, but I've done more research and found just as many saying it's fine to jump in blind. Thank you!

Here because I've been trying to force myself to read older Marvel titles (that others love) but I just have not had the patience or interest in the writing. You gave some great advice about personalizing our tastes and paying attention to what we're drawn to when we read. Thank you!! I have been in love with Wanda Maximoff since I was a little kid in the 2000s and seeing her on X-Men Evolution, then the MCU, I've been really craving some stories about complicated female characters with depth and now after watching this, I'm gonna give myself permission to bounce around instead of feeling pressured to read everything in chronological order!

I enjoy reading chunks of runs, going back and forth between and within series, and then filling in the blanks through my memory and through reading those blanks if I haven't. A good story is a good story, you don't need a 60 year background for the character. I also always read 3 to 6 things at the same time, alternating by mood or room (no kidding there, I have my heavier books lying in different rooms until read.

Great advice and points on how and where to start reading comics. when i started i read Essex County by jeff lemire, the reason i read that book was because Essex county was going to be made into a tv series and i wanted to read the source material before watching the show and I really enjoyed the book so much i decided to find more comics and graphic novels by jeff lemire and he basically became my favourite writer and artist, now i look for comic books that are by jeff lemire whether hes the writer, artist or both, what i love about jeff lemire comics and graphic novels where he only does the writing is that i get see a new comic artist and admire the artwork and jeff has partnered with many great comic book artists like Dustin Nguyen,Andrea Sorrention, Emi Lenox and many other and gives me more appreciation and admiration for comic book art by different artists and seek out more of their works which gives me more comics and graphic novels to read

Wow very helpful. I never got into comics until now. I started by saying I like dc. I want to read Batman. Then got overwhelmed. After following the advice I settled on the first 3 volumes of the new 52 Scott Snyder 2011-2016 run. I feel like I will try to read and collect all the volumes from those years. Then move on from there. Thanks!

Ohhhh, so comic books are like relaunch Star Trek books. No one single place to start, interconnected storylines between series, and a myriad of writers over the decades. Very helpful video for someone who knows zip about comics :)

Not all are like that, there are alot that simple linear stories done by one team that ends, such as Walking Dead, Invincible, Umbrella Academy, Black Science, Saga and much more.

Idk I just grab a comic of what series I really enjoyed growing up and then expand my interest. Like I first started with Batman comics then I went to x men series, then much more. Currently I’m reading comics within the watchmen universe because I loved the main comic so much so like I started going to the before watchmen stuff or after watchmen stuff like the Rorschach series that came out last year ( my favorite character in watchmen)

I’m definitely trying to expand outside of my general superhero stuff because I’ve been the biggest Batman fanboy for the longest time and I need to branch out

This is a huge help. I wanted to get into Spiderman stuff after watching Into the Spiderverse and bought a few but never read that much. It's just so confusing with all of the different titles. Especially with the Miles Morales stuff where it seems like there's two different runs with a lot of the same staff?

Thanks for this video. I started on a popular Marvel jumping on point and following the continuity via a complete reading guide and marvel unlimited (tho not everything of course) through loads of events and - it’s REALLY boring! Constantly jumping from one title to the next, never really getting into anything, worrying that I was missing something. Think I’m gonna try worrying less about the continuity and just enjoy individual runs.

Good example for me is Thor. I read first 20 issues of Thor/Journey into Mystery. Boring, dull, hated it. Read Walt Simonsons Thor run and it’s probably my favorite comic book run ever

Been reading comics for years. Go for what I like. Get runs, ominbus and trade paperbacks. Big collection. Love anime but never read a Manga. Go for the top stories like you said. Hit or miss. Long Halloween, Hush, Deadly Class and others. Love them. Grant Morrison Batman run not a big fan and others. Miss. Bendis run was good on Daredevil. You made some good points. Ii do mostly what you said. Good review man

Thanks for the video, I was kind of frustrated, because sometimes you want to jump to the current lineup but their current situation is not good and the only previous material that you were exposed to was a video game or a movie. For me for example my favorite X-Men is Cable but the first time that I saw it was when Marvel vs Capcom 2 was available in the arcades.
