Just ran across this these past few days. Best I've seen. I'm in Northeast Arkansas, 74 years old and been gardening many years. I look forward to following all your videos now on your new homestead. I have never really gardened with raised beds but planted in rows plenty wide enough for tillers and garden raking to keep down grass and weeds. I just may try some of these beds now so I don't need to bend so much in my old age. Thanks for the enjoyment I've received and the videos I intend to watch in the future.

Hollis, you crack me up! Dude, I think you just look for an excuse to build the next really nifty, really efficient garden system. You are so clever. In my area, we never have fall plants so I have to start coles from seed. For me, I have to include an automatic misting system to keep the soil moist. During the hot summer, the soil dries out in the afternoon and I have to water seeds twice a day. Thanks for sharing. Love you guys.

Hi, As always, another great build, T and I, love your outdoor seed starter, strong, beautiful , with many years of use, starting cold or warm weather plants. Some of the plants Nancy will be doing a cooking video showing her harvesting the vegetable and taking it into the kitchen and cooking up something tasty with it. We are looking forward to bringing these videos to everyone in hopes there is a little something for everyone. Thanks for watching Maureen. I wish you luck with your rack. We also live in Florida so it makes your videos relevant to us. I have watched several other sites and really get into it then they say they are in a state that can grow easily because they are up north in to the west. I particularly like how you use containers incase there is a hurricane coming and you can move your plants. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. God Bless!

Great idea! Really like this rack. Question: do you have problems, with the 2nd or 3rd lower shelves not getting enough noon light if you have plants on the top rack? Thabks🤡

I redesigned this rack when we moved to Florida. It now has two shelves. The top is covered with 40% shade cloth. Here is a link to the new rack: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i8x6qMugqKi6XZs.html

What a creative and brilliant design you've done there! I hope you patent it! I love that, and hope to emulate the basics of it out in our new/old greenhouse for Spring. We are in zone 4, so our growing season is super short up here. Do you think it may work in a greenhouse with fans and ventillation, or is it better outside in the fresh air? Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful work, and that of your lovely wife Nancy. I So enjoy your videos. :)

+Grace tohealanonny Thanks for watching and your kind words. This system is designed for outside use in zones that are hot, we are in zone 8A. Being in zone 4 you would do better with a greenhouse. For us it is a challenge to start our Cole crops in time for planting because the temps are still in the 90s when we are trying to start our seeds. This rack will keep the temps down and allow air movement. The trick here is to throttle the direct sunlight.

My rutabegas are were put in last month as that is how I had to do it. They may not be out of the ground until the end of December which is okay because they get better tasting after a hard frost. Will plant more of them as soon this month and get them in by January. Going to get more carrots and put them in too. Things that don't mind the cold will go in this year. Zone 6a.

Do fall veggie seeds need the right soil temps as other seeds put in the ground at spring? None of my brussel sprouts made it out of the ground. I suspect it was just too hot in July.
@HollisNancysHomestead

+Barbara Rickman I don't direct sow my Cole crops. I start them in starter cups and then transplant them to the earth garden when the temps have cooled down a bit. For my area I try to start my earth garden in the fall on First week of September. I start my seeds in my outdoor seed rack first week of August

I like that rack! I will start my brussel sprouts indoors next year as they don't seem to do so well direct sow. Don't know why, but, such is life. Spaced my carrots out much better this time around and they look great. Got an upper garden space above where the swimming pool dock sat. Gonna plow it up next year and get it ready. Hubby says putting in the fence will be easy. May do what you have done fence wise. Tomatoes and all in ground crop go in the upper garden next year. They need the ability to go deep. Just hope the folks that built this house did not use it as a dumping area for building material.

Can I do this without the concrete? Also will the home depot make all the cuts for me if I just give them your list? I don't have a power saw. Also can I just use hammer and nails or do I need to drill? I'm considering doing something like this with HT pallets to save money. I've already made a compost heap with old pallets.

Hello again Hollis. I watched the video twice to see if I missed it but you didn't mention rotating the trays so all get the same amount of sunlight.. Top to bottom, back to front then reverse those etc. I was looking at the tray you have in place and the front had plenty of sun but the back was in the shade.. Maybe rethink that 100% black out material at the back?
@HollisNancysHomestead
@HollisNancysHomestead 8 жыл бұрын
+Loretta Goff Rotate the trays if needed. No more sun especially afternoon sun. At the time of filming the sun was just coming up. As it rises shadows change. Strive for morning sun only. Four hour is all they need. Definitely do not want any afternoon sun, it is a seedling killer. I like the way you think things through!! Be proactive not reactive👍

I'm gonna try one more time and if it dont work I will just have to direct seed in rows and field transplant! I spent a ton of money this year trying to start fall plants with no luck! I even started them in june when it was cooler this year got the same thing! I start over 10k plants for the spring with no issue in the greenhouse but these fall plants get me every single time! Also mine are in tobacco float trays floating on water in a outdoor aquaponics system an they still failed! I tried it last summer in seed pack and 2 inch pots nothing I did helped

We have done an update. After we moved to our new Florida homestead we built a modified version of the seed starting rack. It worked well in Virginia but the new version is even better. We are releasing a mini series on our seed starting area each week now. The new seed starting rack video is scheduled for release in a couple of weeks.
