The definition you offer for "selling out" is interesting to me because even though that phrase is used mostly in a very specific way (making art that is trying to appeal to commercial pressures in a way one wouldn't if they were truly free to do whatever), I agree with your broader idea of it more than not. Under capitalism, everyone ultimately has to sell themselves in one way or another in order to survive, after all. Might as well do it in a way that's at least somewhat palatable, I guess? I dunno, monetarily capitalizing on art has always seemed hard and imposing and anguish-inducing to me, but this video has reminded me to stop and consider if I'd really rather take going back to retail and spending who knows how long working it.
