Hey Matt, I’m the kid that emailed you the videos of me at the cages, and I’ve been having problems getting my swing back down after 2 years of not playing, but ever since you told me to stay back, I’ve been doing so with a little help from my dad and some other prospects, I have been able to do so and really make some improvements and have been hitting much better in games as before. Thank you.💯💪🏾

Good job Matt. I teach stay back pretty much the same way, with a little different terminology that I stole from Ted Williams. Williams understood that the way you get your weight back is to turn your pelvic girdle (hips) backwards against a firm rear leg. He called it "cocking the hips". Others call it a "hip coil". In order to cock your hips your front heel/foot has to lift off the ground. When you lift your front heel/foot off the ground you have to shift some weight onto the back leg to keep from falling forward on your face. Somewhere along the line, this slight backward shift of weight onto the back leg started being taught as the way to get and keep your weight back. Which is totally wrong. As Williams said; the shifting of weight onto the back leg when he cocked his hips was strictly done to maintain balance; to prevent him from falling forward when he lifted his front foot to cock his hips. Shifting of weight onto the back leg is done to maintain balance. It is not done as a way to get your weight back. The weight shift is the backward and forward turning of the hips against a firm rear leg. Once you have cocked your hips and gathered yourself by shifting a little bit of weight back on your back leg. you have to allow your torso/head to come forward in order to continue to maintain balance. Balance defined as keeping your head centered between your feet at all times. If you keep your hips turned backwards against a firm rear leg; as your torso/head move forward to maintain balance...YOUR WEIGHT IS STILL BACK EVEN THOUGH YOUR TORSO/HEAD IS MOVING FORWARD. Weight shifting is done by turning the hips backward and forward against a firm rear leg...rotational. Shifting weight laterally backwards onto the back foot and forward onto the front foot is done strictly to maintain balance. Once a hitter accepts the idea that you can "come forward and be back at the same time" they'll take a giant leap forward in their ability to hit a baseball well. The most common way of staying back I see being taught today; is for the hitter to shift laterally backwards onto the back foot. That leads to all kinds of problems.

It’s so funny about coaching and terminology. I taught the exact same thing, but preached “staying over your swing”, whereas you preach “hinge”. Same concept. I must have yelled “stay back” and “stay over your swing” 10,000 times over the years. It worked.

Just did a rewatch on this. Staying back with the hip hinge and pullback seems so logical. I was mistakenly thinking that scap load was the key but that is not good without that good hitting posture and maintaining that hip hinge. Love rewatching this stuff to pick up more info!!!

Thank you for the help in advance. I've had problems with this for such a long time. I've been trying so hard to figure out what is going on with my hitting. I'm out in front of guys throwing cheddar and I'm out in front of lollypops. It's so frustrating because I'm a fantastic hitter, and it is supposed to be one of my biggest strengths. For some time, I was under the belief that I'm swinging too early because I'm reaching, but also am having trouble seeing the ball near the point of contact. So I'm going out where I can see it, and trying to hit it there. Looking to pick your brain here. I'm having a hard time figuring out what this problem is, because when I'm on a tee, I'm fine, when I see short toss, I'm fine, when I'm in a game, I can't see those very important last fractions of a second. Thanks for helping all these aspiring ball players out.

Hey Matt, where is the weight on the back foot? I think inside part of the foot is correct, but should it be toward the heel, the middle or instep or more toward the ball of the foot?

Can you make a video about what rolling over is and how you can prevent it, I can’t hit the ball hard to the left side to save my life, If I do hit the ball to the left side it’s a ground ball to the short stop or third baseman.

Hi Matt, my 11 yr old had a beautiful swing, in terms of form, but he is perpetually early, especially on slower pitchers. It’s gotten so bad, he just can’t make contact some days. I watch video of him, and can clearly see he’s just missing as his bat is in and through the zone just as the ball is entering it. I’m the head coach of the team and it’s driving me crazy as I cannot seem to correct it. He goes to a hitting and crushes the ball during his lessons, but in a game or even BP he cannot time it up. He’s a big, strong kid, and I can see the frustration in him as well. Any good drill ideas that can benefit him and my entire team?

What are some of the reasons why hitters move forward? From what i've seen, hitters do this against slower pitchers, and it feels like they try to "meet" the ball out in front--like it's a natural response to try and hit it way out in front because their eyes want to see it more..I'm just curious as to why so many hitters tend to do this against slower pitchers..Thanks for the great content!
