Spot welding (or spot welding) is a type of electrical resistance welding used to weld sheet metal products where metal surface points that come into contact with each other are joined by heat from resistance to electric current.
The process uses two shaped copper alloy electrodes to concentrate the welding current into a small "spot" and simultaneously clamp the sheets together. The workpieces are held together by the pressure exerted by the electrodes. In general, sheets with a thickness of 0.5-3 mm are welded. Forcing a large current through the point melts the metal and welds are done. The attractive feature of spot welding is that a lot of energy can be transmitted to the spot in a very short time (approximately 10-100 milliseconds). This allows the rest of the plate to be welded without overheating.
The amount of heat (energy) transmitted to the point is determined by the resistance between the electrodes, the magnitude and duration of the current. The amount of energy is selected to suit the material properties of the plate, its thickness and the electrode type. Applying too little energy will not melt the metal or make a poor weld. Applying too much energy melts too much metal, removing the molten material and making a hole in the weld. Another feature of spot welding is that the energy supplied to the spot can be controlled to produce reliable welds.
