Hey it’s me, a dude 7 months after you posted this thanking you for it. We had this exact problem happen just now and were able to fix it thanks to you.

If you get to the point of having the water turned off up stream from the supply, replace the valve with a quality modern quarter turn ball valve. No matter what you do to the old globe valve, within a year or two it will again leak, especially if you close and reopen it a few times. Each time you close the glove valve, you drag that corroded stem through the packing, causing wear, and press the washer against the worn/corroded seat.

Step 0 never touch these valves unless you are ready to replace it with a 90 degree valve. Turn you water off at the street if you have to.

I had two of these, one on either side of our indoor water meter. It got to the point where I had to shut them both on to shut the water completely off. I was able to get the "before the meter" one shut off one last time and work quickly to replace the "after the meter" one with a quarter-turn ball valve. Now I can reliably shut the water off to my home. If the city needs to shut it off before the meter, that's their problem lol. Actually they've already replaced the meter since I've done that fix so it must be good enough.

Do not tighten that packing nut with the valve completely closed, you will split the nut. Good luck finding a matching valve stem. That old gate valve has seen better days kinda like me 😳

Pro tip: if the packing nut is tightened all the way down like that, bottomed out, you already know the packing needs replacing. Replace the packing but don't crank it down hulk tight. The nut itself may also be cracked or damaged (a little Teflon tape may buy you some time if it is leaking from the nut threads. Buying an assorted bag of valve seals/washers and keeping them in the plumbing bag is the way to go. There are flat and wedge shaped versions. They will NOT stop a leak at the valve stem, they just stop the flow of water through the valve. Check the valve seat inside the valve body to make sure there aren't broken chunks of dried rubber seal stuck to it. It should be smooth and clean. They sell kits to clean/smooth the valve seats. These fixes may last long enough for it to be SEP (Somebody Else's Problem), but if you've got some work ethic, plan to replace that valve when it starts to leak again.

Ball valve or bust. I rip these out anywhere I can and replace them with ball valves. Only place they stay it on the outside of my house for my water spigots.

Step six: go to comments about your ideas because you know everything

A very simple 4th solution is to use boiler seal. It comes in a tube and a small jugs. Several different varieties and colors. I prefer white with Teflon added. It is a great seal and the thick goo is also a lubricant for adding in turns on the cap nut. This is the simplest and probably most successful solution to packing gland failure.

I have never had success when bringing in parts of a valve like this to a home improvement store and being told that I can buy just the parts that I need. I have heard from the old timers that they used to do that, but not anymore.

So, a globe valve is designed to throttle the flow. A gate valve or a ball valve is designed to open or close. Throttling the flow with a gate or ball can be done but will eventually cause the valve to not fully stop flow. If you have a situation where it is either open or closed use a ball valve, or a gate. The ball valve will last longer. But if you need to adjust the flow rate the globe valve is the right choice.

You should probably shut the water supply first so you don’t flood the basement. Typically, this is done by the municipality with a ‘key’ at the sidewalk

That washer be wasn't just old and probably hard as a rock, but it also looked a little rough(even an old hard washer should still be smooth) and because it looks rough, ya need to stick your pinky finger in the valve right where ya screwed the stem out. You should feel a nice smooth seat. (Where the washer actually meats metal to shut the water off)....if it feels rough, you can change the washers a thousand two hundred and fifteen times and it still won't cut off goodp

If you have to replace the washer,try the beveled one instead...last longer as long as the seat its good.

Newer valves often have a screw that snaps off as soon as you put a screwdriver on it. Some have a prong with a stop on the end that allows a new rubber stopper to pop right over the end after removing the old one. The older valves are easier to repair. My house was built in the 80s and every valve I've encountered has required replacing.

What do I do if there ISN'T a shut off valve before the slightly leaky faucet. I have an artesian well but an old faucet on the SOURCE is leaking and needs to be replaced. It's a rusting iron/metal pipe on my property.

Well, that works well when it's on the other side of the main shut off valve. What about when you can't get access to the shut off valve at the street? Then show us how to freeze the pipe so you can replace the main valve. The city can't find my main valve at the street. Would like to see that .

We call these gate valves over in the UK😂 they are equally as crap here too, just replace with a quarter turn lever valve to save yourself any headaches in the future 🤣

When I was a kid in the 60s, every valve like that I ran into was a leaker. I only use ball valves. Those old valves are a waste of money.

If you don't want to replace the valve (with a ball valve), then replace the packing AND the rubber washer at the same time. I wish they made nitrile washers for valves. Rubber washers harden and fall apart.

Don't repair, replace. Instead of putting the equivalent of duct tape on that valve as a band-aid, install a ball valve or a quarter turn ball valve. Much simpler construction and design and less problems in the future because of it. Gate valves tend to have the issue of turning forever and not opening or closing when old and corroded.

Step one call your plumber. If you break the main feed valve to your house you have no way to stop the water from running and flooding everything around it. The main valve to your house is the most important valve in the house you can dr hose bibs washing machine valves but I highly recommend you not mess with the main unless you have another backup valve or a plumber on speed dial.

Every plumber and experienced DIYer or someone in the trades are completely freaking out that the valve wasn’t completely replaced with a new valve to satisfy local code. Fixing that makes me want to scream. 😂

U didn’t have to cut the seat a little bit? I’ve had them cracked before, pull out the proper Allen key an R&R them, along with a new washer.👍👍

Don’t know why a globe valve is used for a main shutoff.. globes are used for throttling applications. A gate or a ball would be better suited for this type of service.

This is a gate valve, looks similar to a globe valve but globe valves work much better

Mine is outdoors. It was replaced about 4 years ago, but how can I tell if there is even a slow leak? My water bill hasn't moved past the default amount they charge ($15), but I do know I have at least 2 leaks around the house.

Anddd it leaks again in a week lol. Just replace it. Pick up a soldering kit and figure it out. It’s not hard. If you really are afraid of soldering then put a shark bite valve on temporarily if it’s necessary. Then have a professional solder or press a new water valve in.

I have no idea whats the fascination with ball valves amd why so many people recommend them so often even in applications where they are not beneficial. When it comes to your Main feed valve/Stop&Waste(Inlet valve BEFORE WATER METER) Gate valves are recommended, especially for your average home owner. Ball valves increase the risk of water hammer when operated and can also damage the water Meter internals in some instances. Now for any valve AFTER the meter sure go ahead and put a ball valve in. Also it's probably irresponsible to not make a clear distribution between a globe valve and a gate valve in this demonstration

If you get the name of the company off the valve and send them photos, they can sell you the new replacement "guts" , parts, " stem " with all the washers and everything you need. I did this with a bunch of houses built in the 80s If you are in an area near the coast you will see a lot of corrosion. Also in areas that use a lot of road salt.

That's a Gate Valve, and doing what you said definitely isn't every scenario. Especially trying to loosen the bonnet. You didn't show it but I've been a Plumber for over decade and I've tried losing the bonnet a thousand times, and every real Plumber has done the same to tell you that if you can't get it after the 2nd try after trying to loosen that thing, it aint worth busting your knuckles up for because most of them are seized. Gate valve are Garbage anyway. You need to put in a Ball Valve. You think your making a repair, but your doing yourself a disservice by keeping that old shotty valve in service...

Step 3 had absolutely nothing to do with the leak you showed at the beginning. It was leaking through the stem. Step 1 or 2 are the only way to fix that problem... 99% of the time, just go straight to step 2. Don't use too much packing or you wont be able to get the nut back on properly, or you'll crack it when tightening. Also, don't over tighten it, or it will crack.
