WOW... WOW... SUPER WOW!!! BANDREW TO THE RESCUE!!! This was amazingly useful information. I've been chasing my tail for 3 months, TRYING & FAILING to figure out how to do this. I was determined to get it right and refused to give up. THEN, I FOUND THIS VIDEO! I want you to know how much I appreciate you taking the time to share how to set the mic level. I've had brief moments where I liked the outcome I achieved. Then, I was unable to consistently produce/reproduce them. There were small places where the audio sounded harsh, surrounded by a nice sounding voice. I now know it's the clipping. Most importantly, I now have the solution to correct it because you shared it.

I'VE NEVER KNOWN THAT YOU CAN RIGHT CLICK THE VOLUME SLIDER TO CHANGE IT TO DECIBELS! My jaw dropped that for many years that I've been breathing, I just knew about that fact. I know. But setting that sucker to 0db, and then setting my mic just from the mic's gain dial really changed the game for me. You did it again, Bandrew, and thank you so much for making this video. This really helps me. I'm still using my Fifine K688 and after setting it correctly, noise is very low, and I tested my audios from whispering to screaming, no clipping anymore!

I’ve been experimenting for years now, this absolutely sums up what I’ve been not only experiencing but what I’ve had to work around using a Behringer usb to a blue yeti to eventually buying an MV7+ thinking it would solve all my issues. The detail and explain actions given are phenomenal and pretty much gives me a better understanding on what the hell is going on. Like clipping before hitting red because the microphone isn’t staged properly. It seems like very few people ever suggest -12 to -20 peaks, I’m not sure if that’s common within music equipment or anything but it seems to be a solid technique. I know this upload is about a month old already but I hope you get to see this just to see I greatly appreciate this and you’ve taught me something I’ve been cracking at for years.

I have always watched your and Curtis Judd's videos for guidance and information. BUT THIS VIDEO REALLY ANSWERED MY LONG STANDING QUERY - "What does Level =100% mean on Windows?". In the last years, I have spent endless hours searching for the 0.0dB level - but never found out. My assumption, all through, was that 100% = 0.0dB point - and, so, my settings have been off the mark - by a whopping, un-necessary, gain of +30dB. And, today I came to know that there indeed is an official 0.0dB, close to the 50%! My pre-amp is now set optimally - with a consequent reduction in noise too - thanks!

For years I've been frustrated because my audio was too quiet, but if I turned it up I would get clipping. I just threw in the towel and was accepting some clipping. The lifechanger we didn't know existed. Just one right click and you can see gain in Db... For years I thought that 0 Db is around 50% in Windows, and 0% is something like -20 Db thus I never used it... Now it turns out that 0% is 0 Db with my mic. And now it doesn't clip. I went to hell and back only to find out that I couldn't fix this issue and the mic was cheap. Now the problem is solved after all these years. I can't believe it was this simple

This is specifically for OBS and recording/streaming but what about getting into Discord for a call or using the mic inside a video game? Sounding distorted is a problem or too low/too high as well. And changing every single volume source is always so annoying haha.

What I find is if your mic performs well in OBS and recording/streaming, then it sure will perform well in Discord and video games. The only difference is instead of doing it in OBS, you do it in an EQ app (e.g. Equalizer APO for Windows, Easy Effects for Linux, not sure what macOS uses).

thanks so much for all the help bandrew! Quick question since google is failing me :( I have an id4 interface and I've previously been using the mic 1 channel meter to gainstage per your last video. But once the 2 channel interface is mixed to mono in OBS the gain is not even close to -20 / -12db peaks. Do you recommend I continue to use the ID4 software to gainstage and massively gain in post, or should I use OBS as my meter like you did in this video? Thanks again!
@Podcastage
@Podcastage 4 ай бұрын
I believe what you’re encountering is when downmixing your interface to mono, OBS attenuates the signal by 6dB. My understanding is that this is to account for Pan Law. You will likely need to add +6dB to compensate for this.

@SweetGeg 4 ай бұрын
@@Podcastage really appreciate your help, that makes sense and I'm glad I was playing it safe going by the id4 levels. I wonder if all the people we see thinking they need cloudlifters for dynamics is simply because many of them are streamers / youtubers mixing down to mono in their DAW - that would explain a lot haha. Yes you can: that's my setup at work, so my voice is consistent across all communication apps (Teams, Zoom...). The only drawback is EqAPO does not display the visual feedback of filters/VSTs, so you have to tune your setup "by ear". This mean record yourself and listen back, or enable the monitoring ("listen to this device" option in windows). Tips: you can run an external VST host that displays the visual feedback to tune your filters and find the good spot. Do not forget to first disable EqAPO processing on your mic while doing this or you will process the audio twice :)

It may be my untrained ears, but I'm having a hard time noticing the effect of both the Limiter and the Compressor. Having either of them on or off sounds so similar that I can't notice the difference.

The compressor on this demo was mainly audible on the loud portion. If you don’t want to use the compressor and the limiter, use the limiter. The limiter will ensure you do not exceed 0dbfs, while the compressor will still allow you to get there and potentially clip.

@@Podcastage I understand making videos takes a lot of time (many many hours)… But an idea for a future iteration of this video is to also show a scope (i.e. the waveform) of the audio with and without the limiter, and with and without the compressor, to help seeing the differences, in case we can't hear them well. I even thought: Can't I hear the difference due to my (definitely not professional) headphones? Or is it due to the KZfaq compression? Or is it because I'm not trained to hear the differences? Still, I appreciate your videos and all the effort you've been doing.

I hope this wasn't due to me. I was just being some nameless guy on YT throwing out his $0.02 Regardless, this is super thorough, and I'm sharing to several people I know. Two thumbs up!

Yup. Got too many questions which meant I didn’t have a complete video before. Had to rerecord and add the additional information to make this video useful.

This is great! However wouldn't that make the mic a little too low while it's also used by another app, say discord?

Tip for setting audio interface input gain: cough in the general position you want to record audio and slowly turn the dial back until the coughs stop causing clipping, only after this should you worry about the rest of your audio chain. Another tip for OBS, to use the noise gate effectively you should start by dragging the "open threshold" level at the lowest possible value, manually increase it until you see the green bars of your mic in OBS disappear when it gets quiet, set the "close threshold" to this value, then make the open level around 10db higher than this, this is especially useful if you have an AC or a loud PC.
