Hanging baskets for plants dry out incredibly quickly. With the coconut fibre liners and a coconut coir or peat moss substrates there are high rates of evaporation. This is caused by the exposure to excess sunlight, air movement and porous medium. This can cause major headaches around August when things begin to dry out! This gardening in Canada video is going to go through exactly how to increase the water holding capacity of your hanging baskets.

A B O U T M E:
Ashley is a soil scientist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are KZfaq, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s KZfaq channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her KZfaq channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

I do like hanging baskets but they can be a pain! Here are the cornstarch bags I’m using -> geni.us/Z7JH these fall apart pretty darn quick so doubling or tripling these may be needed!

A few layers of wire screen has worked well for me to increase the water retention. It tends to hold the potting soil together better than the coco liners.

A friend of mine is forever picking up the strangest things next to the road. She's picked up quite a few discarded matresses. She uses the wire inside as trellises and uses the thick felt material in the bottom of her hanging pots. It stays soggy for a long time. Happy gardening.

I've tried a couple different things over the years, but this year I drilled a few small holes in the lids of plastic ice cream buckets and placed those on the bottom. It seems to be working really well so far.

Great video! Last summer I used coco lined baskets with a tin pie plate along bottom for cherry tomatoes and they did really well! The liners were showing their age so were composted in the fall. What is a good food safe liner for hanging baskets? Are coco liners from the dollar store ok to grow food?

Instead of a bag, have you tried a diaper? New not a used diaper. You cut out the other plastic and just keep the white part. Put that into the bottom of your hanging basket. Inside that part of the diaper is water absorbing crystals which will hold the excess water. If the basket starts to dry out the roots have a source of water. Soil moist crystals also work. Just a thought if you know someone who has a baby and can buy a diaper off them.
@GardeningInCanada

I have totally heard about this! But what is in diapers 😅
@growclipbonsaiforseniors1951

@@GardeningInCanada Diapers, in order to absorb urine, they have crystals in it. The crystals swell to almost 3 times their size. So a new diaper has just the crystals in it to absorb the water when you water your basket. As the soil starts to dry the plants can then take the soil from the crystals. That is how soil moist works. A teaspoon of soil moist in a 1 gallon bucket should fill the bucket like a gel. That is how much they absorb water. Once incorporated into the soil, the soil moist, the roots can take water from them when dry. Crystals that are dried out will reabsorb water again. If you can get a new diaper, cut it open and you will see the crystals. Put them in water and watch them swell. I know that you are busy and I thought that this would help you out.

All well and good, baskets are already planted and starting to look pretty but wait!! Cute little birds are now nesting in amongst the rather pricey wave petunias so no more watering and the basket won’t get watered now unless the rain 🌧 drives in from the south! Sigh
