How To Prevent Smoke When Lighting a Wood Burning Stove
NOTE: Stove Manufacturers and showrooms - Please feel free to put my videos on your own websites.
This is baffling to most people but it is in fact a very simple problem to stop. There is a little science to get you head around first but once you know the reason you will be soon lighting the perfect fire in your wood/Log burning stove.
Make sure you see my first video about "How to light the perfect fire in a wood burning stove! Using my special inverted V technique!". The inverted V really does work and it has been viewed by over 250,000 viewers, that say it all. I hope you enjoy this video and the other one "How to light the perfect fire in a wood burning stove! Using my special inverted V technique!" and you have many beautifully made fires. I will be making a new video soon about logs and wood for you log burning stove plus a few lighting and cleaning tips.
How to light the perfect fire in a wood / log burning stove using the inverted v system for lighting - The most important point is having really dry kindling wood and logs (and as warm as possible, this is really important! Wet wood makes the glass dirty). So proper management of your log storage is crucial. Always try whenever possible to keep one or two starting logs indoors, somewhere like an indoor cupboard, or if you can - in an airing cupboard! This is especially important for the kindling wood, it makes it all much easier if this can be achieved. Just keep replacing the logs in your extra dry storage as you use them so you always have a fresh supply for your next lighting. That's good fire lighting management! Plus, it will never let you down.
Why would anyone rely on purchasing anything to start a fire when all you will need is readily available? I don't use any materials that are not readily available and totally free. You can get the cardboard boxes on a weekly basis from a shopping mall, super market or your local store free! But I do buy in most of my logs and use what ever wood becomes available whether from the garden or indeed a skip with the odd old building pallet in it. That's sustainable management, recycling at it's best and very good for the environment. Wood pallets chopped up can produce very good kindling but make sure the wood is natural and untreated.
The stove in the video is the ever popular and highly appraised Clearview Pioneer 400p the Clearview 400 is the same stove but lower on the ground without the wood warmer / store beneath.
A word of caution: Wood / Log burning stoves are a very safe way of heating your home, but they must never be left unattended! Check your home insurance small print to make sure you are properly covered in the very unlikely event of a house fire. Never store logs close to your wood burning stove or multi fuel stove. Wood burning stoves run very hot indeed and the logs can catch fire with disastrous consequences!
Viewers of my video in the UK please be aware we have to have Carbon Monoxide detectors fitted. See carbon monoxide detector manufacturers websites and instructions for the correct installation procedure. Carbon monoxide is given off when wood is brought up to burning temperature. The gas can still be present well after the fire appears to be out. Even cool embers and charcoal give off this deadly gas.
If you follow these instructions for lighting your wood burning stove you will never, like me have a failed attempt again. Less fuss than most other ways!
Every wood burner is slightly different in the way it needs to be lit, and every home has it's own draft characteristics. But following the lighting technique in this video will always get the best results, as long as you have very dry small pieces of kindling wood to start your fire. Logs have to be totally dry and ready to go.

However you decide to light your fire, enjoy your log burning stove - they are really great or even 'grate'!!
If you don't have a wood burning stove yet. then you don't know what you are missing! Our Clearview Pioneer 400p stove never fails to impress all that see it. Most people who view my stove go away and have one installed!
Cleaning your viewing glass can be done easily and cheaply using a dampened paper towel and just dipping it gently into some very fine wood ash. You will find this method will clean the most dirty of glasses. This is an old skill most probably dating back to the Victorian era.
Don't forget: Wood management is crucial - Good practice means you will never have a failed lighting attempt again! Happy wood burning!

Thank you for this video! You can also adjust the damper or the front pieces Notes : You draw fast, like an artist, There are different types of chimneys. sometimes smoke fills the room due to the cold air in the chimney, so heat the chimney up. Goodness when the smoke fills the room, it burns the eyes so bad. Be thankful if you have a electric heater.

So obvious when you think of it! Thanks Mike, I had wondered why my log burner filled the room with smoke when I hadn't used it for a few days and the weather was cold and wet. Now I know how to solve it. Thanks so much for posting this video.

Thank you so much Mike for your advice. We moved into our house 3 yrs ago, and felt pleased it had a woodburner. It has a rear flue and stainless steel chimney on the outside wall. Every attempt at lighting the stove threw thick smoke into the room. We then had to open windows on freezing cold days. After many unsuccessful attempts over the first year we gave up on having a fire. The whole house smelt of smoke. Not nice! Now I know why it happened so maybe after three years I'll be able to enjoy the look and warmth of a fire burning in the stove. Fingers crossed. Thank you again. Very informative.

I have the same problem at the moment and his drawing basically showed our scenario so I’m hoping we can figure it out with these tips. Anyone have luck with this method? We just installed a jotul 507 and spent so much getting it set up that it’s a shame we’ve run into so many beginner problems lol. I am excited to feel at ease with it on eventually. Not fun when the house fills with smoke and you don’t know what to do. Even worse when you’re left cold and Smokey smelling.

Hi Mike, Nice video thanks for sharing , I often recommend placing a couple of tea lights in the fireplace 15-20 mins before you intend to light the fire leaving the door open a smidge (about 1 cm)

We've had the same issue of smoke in our house when lighting a new fire. We place a small ceramic space heater in fireplace on a piece of foil and let it run for 15 minutes or so before starting fire. Works great.

Great video, I’m a chimney sweep and I’ve found this a lot with people thinking they have a blockage in the chimney, I advise the same lighting a few sheets of newspaper to create the heat to push the cold plug of air out of the chimney, it’s usually external flues when’s it’s been really cold or it can be a traditional internal chimney if it’s not been used for a while. It’s also better if the chimney is cleaned regularly. A clean chimney is a safer chimney

Hi and thanks for your comments. As regards the after smoke issue, I can only suggest the choice of material may be at fault or a lack of draft. I personally have a few logs and chopped wood which is very very dry and would help you also in bringing your stove and flu up to temperature very quickly! This is probably a temperature issue so really stoke it up quickly with your driest soft woods. If this fails, try opening an adjacent window or door for a few minutes. Good luck, stay safe and warm!

@@mikecraft4506 thanks so much for responding. I will try that! We are currently using seasoned wood we brought into our barn 2 winters ago. Is it possible it’s too dry? I read that somewhere on google but it didn’t make sense to me…. I am also very new to this so I have a lot to learn. 😆

First looking at this I'm a little confused, I thought the whole reason why you couldn't light the wood is because the smoke from it will come back into the house, so how is it that you're able to light newspaper without smoke coming back into the house?
@mikecraft4506
@mikecraft4506 5 жыл бұрын
You need a lot of instant prolonged heat to be able to lift the cold air up the flu, without this on the coldest days it can fail and does for many. Every stove installation and fireplace are different and many people fail because of a lack of preparation. I am old enough to have seen this over many years. I had one set of grandparents who worked below stairs in a large Victorian house with many fireplaces. All fireplaces each day were cleaned and made ready for the household to request the fires be lit. One thing certain was when lit, the fire instantly had to be good with no smoke or failings. This is where I am coming from! Getting to know and understand any issues you have (if any) are understood and managed.

@@mikecraft4506 I would agree with that completely, I have a system of placing a small space heater at the opening of my fireplace and allow it to heat up the flue for 1hr, then light the log and every time without fail I have a smoke free experience.

A small smoky fire doesn’t want to go up the flue. You want a fast burning hot fire with little smoke and thus the use if paper.

I think you missed the concept of cold air in the flue stopping the smoke going up the chimney and then entering the room.Mike's idea of the blow torch is a really useful way to stop this happening. i.e. Forget about the paper and heat the flue directly with a torch.
