I am a new golfer and I top the ball a lot. I watched this video last night and went to the driving range today; video helped immensely. The tips of spine angle and the pillow was key for me. I have a LOT to work on but I was smoking them tonight!! Thanks Rick. Huge fan!!

Rick is great taking complex golf issues and boiling it down to 1 or 2 key points to remember - he does this so you can actually activate his advice at the driving range or at the course. Good job Rick.

Thanks for killing some of these ridiculous myths that we hear so often. The stuff you hear from some golfers trying to help their friend/spouse is truly mindboggling.
@Droltan

Your head is attached to your body, so coming out of your posture does make your head lift from where it was - it's the result of another action, so your head does lift, but only as a result and not the cause (if that makes sense) Meandmygolf did a video on a similar subject, saying lifting your head was bollocks (not in those words obviously) and that it was in fact the lifting of the shoulders, not the head. Well the head sits on the shoulders, so again, lifting them (except in a shrug type movement) does raise the head. I would argue that it's easier for a new golfer to concentrate on maintaining the level of their head through to impact, read "don't lift your head", thus maintaining spine angle etc as a result, than it would be to be told to maintain their spine angle and be slightly baffled/confused by terminology. I think that's why you hear it so often from amateurs, because it simplifies a problem to a symptom rather than root cause although treating the symptom can also help cure the cause. Sure, you can lift your head without moving your body, but get someone to bend over and then ask them to lift their head a little, i'd be willing to bet they stand up a bit in order to do it. Of course, i'm not even that good at golf, so I'm probably talking absolute tripe. I'll stick to my day job I reckon.
@blgdinger3

Apparently these people have never actually had this problem since they dont know what it was ever referring to, lol. You explained it well.
@crowsbeakx22
@crowsbeakx22 2 жыл бұрын
You have somewhat of a point, but when amateur golfers hear this, like my son for instance, they try to correct the motion by keeping their head very still through the golf swing and actually inhibiting their range of motion. Which they point out in the video. Also, a person can move their spine up and actually lower their head at the same time when trying to "maintain eye contact" or to keep from "pulling up their head". And still end up performing the same terrible shot. I have video of myself doing it. So many golfers have poor posture, and bad ball position, so they have trained their swing to keep from hitting behind the ball or trying to lift the ball, so they end up coming out of position. And the advice of "you pulled your head" or you "took your eye off the ball" (meaning they've turned their head too quickly to try and find the ball in the air) doesn't actually help them fix what is causing their thin or shank shot. This video is giving sound advice.

Rick I Understand that coming out of posture is the reason but surely for some people this is because they are "looking where they have hit it " before striking the ball which causes the loss of posture?
@PERPowns
@PERPowns 5 жыл бұрын
That was the case with me. My roommate showed me this video and afterword I filmed myself on the range with a gopro. Me lifting my head directly resulted in me coming out of my posture almost 100% of the time and topping the ball/hitting a poor shot. When I kept my head down, I stayed in my posture and consistently struck a decent shot. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose!

I employ Corey Pavin’s technique, where my eyes stay where the ball was a fraction after impact. I might be sacrificing distance, but I don’t see it, because my strikes are more pure. I try to see the impact. How David Duval did it I’ll never understand. His head and eyes were ahead of the club.

thanks for this video.. i thought i was topping the ball sometimes, and sometimes shank it (even that it jumps to the left, so it's behind the shaft), but now i think i actually hit it on the shaft when i do think i topped it.. i think reason for this is when i do the rotation, i move my right hip a bit forward (and thus changing the distance to the ball).. looking at Dans slow-motion it looks like he keeps his hips in the same path during the rotation

Being 5'6", I tend to stand on the balls of my feet upon impact (heels off the ground). I have never had a properly fitted set of clubs and I'm thinking this would help. Although my handicap is a healthy 7.1, I still seek improvement. Is there anything you can suggest in future videos on the importance of having correctly sized clubs? Also is there any correlation between the two? Thanks and continue the very informative videos!

That's because you're messing with your rotation line like they said in the video. If you look at the ball and nothing else during your full swing, you're losing alot of power on the follow through which is where your ball gets most of its flight from. Meaning you're getting more accuracy but sacrificing alot of yards for it. Not a good habit to get into if you ever want to get close to the green on a par three first stroke.

Head down lol. Hips, body turning towards the target and head follows AFTER you hit the ball. It's interesting the way their explaining it. In no way am I saying I'm anywhere near the level they are at, but it can be confusing when you clearly see pro golfers (even when demonstrating in a video) keep their head DOWN until AFTER they hit the ball, then they look up. 🤷‍♂️

For a suggestion, you could do a series for the golfer who can't break 100 and how to get them under 90. For me, your videos have helped me catch the golf bug, I started on your channel last year as I was just starting to play, and I've come down from my first round last year of around 125 down to a best of 99 thanks in no small part to you (and Pete). But it's still frustrating to see 3 digits on my card, the killer for me is losing balls from the tee, and duffing around the greens and bunkers. I'm actually pretty consistent on the range, but on the course it hooks and slices, very annoying.

I remember as a kid my father basically cast that advice in iron. "Head down, keep your head down, you looked up, don't peek, eyes down" I started getting really frustrated because, of course, I really don't feel like I'm doing anything that would change my shot with my head or eyes. So, my act of defiance was to literally never stop looking at the spot I hit the ball until I was done with the entire swing. Where'd the ball go? Who knows, I was told not to move my freaking head.
