You can order the Arris Active return amp on Amazon here: amzn.to/3AaX6i9
and the PCT active return amplifier is available here: amzn.to/2IBdRx4
and you can get the 24-channel modem here: amzn.to/3uTUtxT
In this video I show you how to once-and-for-all stop your cable modem from dropping its connection; hint-hint it is usually not your router. This is an easy fix to a frustrating problem. We check your upstream downstream power levels to see if they are good.

Out of hundreds of of videos about modem drop outs and forum posts, this guy is THEE ONLY Guy that mentioned that newer modems use more frequency channels to communicate and that feature can help solve the drop out issue. Of course the icing on the cake is the amp information but the fact that newer modems use more channels, fucking priceless knowledge. This video deserves to be fucking viral. Thank You from the bottom of my heart for the knowledge drop.

This will only work if your problem os that your Tx is too high due to impairments or incorrect padding, and it also imparts up to ~40% distortion upon the signal, depending on the modulation type, bandwidth, and number of return channels. This distortion can degrade the quality of the signal being amplified, and can lead to missed QAM targets, which means errors, which means re-sent packets, which means slow speeds. If I came across a customer-procured return amp, it would be in the trash can in abouy 3 seconds 😜

As a cable technician, this gave me a good chuckle. 99% of the time this is your problem? Hahaha there could be many many things causing an issue. Just have a tech come out, they will check all cables from the pole all the way to your modem and make sure all signals are within spec. But yes upstream should technically be below 54, I like to keep it below 50 if I can.

@@3Quirkydogs apartment buildings are tricky. We are not allowed to wallfish any wires anymore. Depending on the layout of the building I will either run the cable through the attic into a closet or drill a hole into the basement and then run it to the box. If none of those options are viable, the last option is to drill out a window and rerun the wire externally on the outside of the building, if that is okay with the owners. What is your wiring setup like? I would schedule another call and see if the previous tech was just being lazy XD

@@DJSubAir The FIRST amp I installed was used. The numbers did indeed come down, but the problem still occurred at the same basic frequency. SO, I bought a NEW amp. Same problem. I have given up and cancelled my TV and Internet provider (who I had been with for 19 years) and went with the local fiber optic offering from Verizon. MUCH more reliable, MUCH better upstream speeds that will help me in my work from home scenarios. THEORY: I believe that my original cable speed of 20Mbps 19 years ago was good and reliable. Over the years, Comcast increased this steadily until my most recent download speeds were around 300 Mbps. I estimate that sometime around 200 Mbps is where the reliability problems started. It could simply be that RG59/RG6 cable simply cannot handle that type of bandwidth given its nature.

@@DJSubAir I had thought the same thing. After the amplifier/splitter that had been in the living room, there is a line run through the apartment to my bedroom, where I had my cable modem. I had suspected that there may be a problem there. But I was fed up and knew that calling Comcast would only get me script-based support (no one with actual knowledge and experience), so I just gave up. That same line is now carrying the video signal from the bedroom (where the Verizon ONT is located) to my living room and have not noticed any issues thus far. Overall, my Internet speeds up and down are better, I like Verizon's TV offerings more, and the overall price is significantly less. Very happy with my decision thus far.

Stop. Stop stop stop. Your forward levels should ALWAYS be between 10dbmv to -10dbmv and your return, the upstream, should always be between 32dbmv and 51dbmv. This “return” amp raises all of your levels by 10. So your forward will tank and your return shoot through the roof. I've had at least 20 chat support tickets made, many calls complaining, over 5 technicians come and "find no issues" and leave. What do you recommend I should do? Spot on with the customer service, everything else was wrong. Each plant runs different. Different frequencies, different forward, return levels, pro idiom ect. All an amp does is creates a point of failure and causes a potential impedance mismatch if it’s not designed for that plant. Also if you need one due to low levels chances are there is an issue with the drop or the plant but that said your cable guy will install one for free if needed. 1. 99% of intermittent internet is going to be caused by a loose or sucked out connector, Behind your modem, wall plate crawlspace house box or tap. 2. That amp he installed is a no gain amp meaning that you can remove the splitters that are attenuating the signal but it will not amplify or balance the levels coming in. 3. Do not put an amp in the attic once they start over heating in the summer mer/ber issues will appear and your internet is gonna get really bad. 4. Keep in mind to low of TX is just as Bad as to high of TX levels. Some modems run optimal on 52tx others at 42tx refer to your company’s website they should have what modems they recommend. I recommend sitting through the long wait and getting a service tech out there.

The actual power on the upstream leg to the provider will increase. However, the level showing on your modem diag page will decrease, since the amp you installed is boosting it AFTER the signal leaves your modem. When your modem has to increase its output power (it does this incrementally) to contact the provider, you have issues. The amp allows your modem to reach the provider using LESS power because the amp is assisting. Hope this makes sense.

It's basically about having the signal loud enough without having the power levels get too high on both the downstream and upstream channels but it's tricky because if you tweak one channel it will affect the other. He did that, removed a filter that was at the pole, replaced all the f-connectors on the cables, and he even added terminators to the coax connectors not being used on the splitters. All in all, the ISP tech guy I got was solid. Yeah, if I would of gotten that active return amplifier.... 🤦🏽‍♂️ I guess in some cases you may need it, but I certainly didn't. The amps are for cable/coax/HFC networks. If you're on FiOS, the amp isn't compatible with fiber.

@@castercam8510 two very different technologies but it's impressive to see what speeds they're able to pull off with existing coax networks! Like many phone co's, mine still uses a LOT of copper. It's many decades old and barely working anymore. Until they get fiber everywhere, people are probably leaving in droves to the cable co!

So much misinformation in this video, though the intent was good. For the love of God, please just book a trouble call to have a tech come out. Unity gain amps like this negate RX loss and TX gains in power levels that normally come about from the use of splitters, or high value taps. They also amplify NOISE levels, so if you already have noise on your lines affecting upstream, this is only going to cause more disconnects. The most common reason for intermittent disconnects, is noise on the upstream from your modem back to the CMTS. SNR upstream levels can give a relative idea of how close to the noise floor your signal is, but most modems don't show your upstream SNR levels. Get a tech to come out and check for ingress from the tap to your devices, and if they fix that and balance your levels correctly, you will not experience intermittent Internet 99% of the time. An amp like this should only be used to keep RX and preferably TX power levels within a certain tolerance range. Where I live, RX levels -10dBmV to +12dBmV are within range, and TX levels 32dBmV to 51dBmV are within range as well. With SNR it's all relative but high 30's to 40's is great. If SNR is in the 20's make sure your coax cables are tight everywhere you have access to, then book a trouble call. This has been PSA from your local cable guy.
