I have a friend working as 1st cheff in a restaurant in Miami, and told me that he recibes their microgreens in "trays", with the substrate, so there is no harvest and the plants still alive when the buy them. I know that it is not the same marketing, but it may work for clients who need the plants as long as they can instead the "nice" package. Did you try that? Or let me know what you thknk about that. my best trick for keeping lettuce/spinach etc fresh is filling the bag with air and then sealing it, also they don't get squished in the fridge
@RovingPunster
@RovingPunster Жыл бұрын
Ive always just relied on gallon ziploc bags, with a folded dry paper towel as a moisture sink - but the ethylene gas absorbing bags are intriguing, and I may try them. Its hard to find a one bag type for all choice, because different products and produce prefer different degrees of permeability. Cilantro for example must be kept meticulously dry (tip: spread on a long sheet of paper towels, then roll up), or it blackens and wilts FAST. Flour tortillaa are the opposite, which tend to dry out prematurely in a standard ziploc, but stay pliable longer in a less permeable freezer bag (tip: to rehydrate/freshen old flour tortillas, moisten a folded up paper towel, then slip a small square of foil into the bag atop the tortillas, to prevent direct contact with the damp towel. Seal the bag, and in a few hours the tortillas become pliable again.)

Something you can do for root vegetables such as beets carrots radishes is put them in a water bath in the fridge, they keep much longer that way just gotta change the water and rinse every once in a while. Eventually the root vegetable will get waterlogged but it works quite well this way

With radishes, I put them in a plastic bag with a piece of damp paper towel or napkin. They stay crisp for a remarkably long time this way. I have put fresh carrots in a jar of water and that also worked great.

I have a water line hooked up to a garden hose with a nozzle that can "shower, mist, soak, etc." Since you are only growing for yourself, that sprayer should work. BUT. How do you deal with the occasional unpleasant odor from certain greens? Like broccoli and arugula for example? I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong in someway because the greens look healthy however there’s a pretty noticeable unpleasant odor from time to time. I have two dehumidifiers and two fans and I keep the temperature Distantly comfortable at around 68 to 70. Thanks in advance

Those 'compostable plastics' are not accurately advertised. They all must be 'commercially composted', and most states don't spend tax dollars on doing it because claiming land for fill is cheaper. P.S. Landfills are designed to NOT let waste decompose. Therefore, nothing is getting composted. Where we go wrong is letting companies 'lie' to us and pretend it is doing something good for the planet. 99% of green technology is FAKE, and does not work as advertised. 'Green technology' is actually the same as 'snake oil', all designed to bring in customers..that's it. My favorite example of this 'lie' is WalMart promoting those plastic vests. Saying 9 bottles were saved from landfill, when actually all they did was remove 'recyclable plastic' from the feedstock stream. Plastic is infinitely recyclable UNTIL you make something from it that gets tossed into the landfill by ex-employees. To make it even a bigger mess for the rush to get rich, 'green plastic' is an even bigger problem than regular plastic...green plastic breaks down into tiny bits that have even been found in a human fetus. Repeat after me...PLA bad.

Im mainly referring to overwatering in general. If you give them too much water and then they sit for a while they can start damping off and can often hold extra moisture. I only top water the first day or two they are under lights. Do you find watering is what you have to most trouble with?

Hey Donny, how many grams or ounces fit into your different sized clamshells? Also, what do you sell those for? I'm assuming you can profit more by selling the smaller ones rather than by the pound?
@DonnyGreens
@DonnyGreens 4 жыл бұрын
You can see all of my different product options on my website at FinestFoodsNY.com. Go there, click on sign up, and then use the dropdown menus to see my prices and oz/package. The smaller packages have a higher packaging cost/product cost ratio so they are not necessarily more profitable. The microgreens themselves are not very costly to produce but then the packaging itself is a considerable cost on a per unit basis. For instance, when selling 1-2 lbs of sunflower, I only incur the cost of one bag for the sale vs incurring the cost of 8-16 clamshells and lids and stickers if I were to sell that quantity in the small containers. Does this make sense?
@evanmassimino3416
@evanmassimino3416 4 жыл бұрын
@@DonnyGreens That's so helpful, thank you so much! Yes that makes perfect sense. If you're okay with answering this, what percentage of your sales would you say your smaller containers are vs your produce bags? I know it all depends on what type of customers you're selling to, but I'm just trying to get an idea of what the market prefers, what my benchmark is, and how many containers vs bags I should be ordering. Out of the hundreds of videos I've watched in microgreens, I haven't seen anyone go into details about the different volume of sales for different containers.
@DonnyGreens
@DonnyGreens 4 жыл бұрын
@@evanmassimino3416 Ok great! My specific numbers will not give any quantitative insight for you because each location and business model is different. For instance, I created something called a "Sunny Sampler Box" which is a mix of different products all in one box. This is one of my top sellers so there are plenty of those being sold each week. But this was a strategic product decision I've made that influences my sales. Every business is different and my numbers will not be the same as your numbers. Buy a small amount of each type of packaging and see what YOUR location and YOUR customers demand. This being said, I do appreciate the feedback and think that sales volume vs container type would make for a great video. I've added it to my list and will definitely be making a video on that in the coming months! I'm sorry this isn't a direct answer but I feel this is more constructive and provides more value & insight than If i just post my numbers. Have you started growing and selling yet?

When is the last time you water before harvesting to prevent the greens from being too wet?
@DonnyGreens
@DonnyGreens 4 жыл бұрын
Great question! I will essentially skip watering on the trays that are going to be harvested that day. Before watering, i remove everything that I’m going to harvest that day and put them on a separate rack on wheels. I then move trays that are done germinating under the lights. Then i water everything, this way what im harvesting that day is already removed and wont get watered or wet by accident. Does this make sense?

@@DonnyGreens yeah, so it's fair to say you give them 24-30 hrs of drying time before harvest, if you only water once a day?

Hey how many oz of greens fit in your packages
@DonnyGreens
@DonnyGreens 4 жыл бұрын
For radish, sunflower, and broccoli, I do 2 oz in the small containers, but ion those same containers I do 3 oz with pea. All of the medium sized boxes get 8oz. Then the bags I use for bulk orders (typically pea and sunflower) and get 1-2 lbs in there. Thanks for asking! Have you started growing microgreens yet?

Yep! The medium size container is the one that the Sunny Sampler is in. Since it's a Sunny Sampler it has more than 8oz. Sunny Sampler has 13oz of greens 🌱😊

@DonnyGreens

There will always be a little bit of condensation. It's only problematic if there is too much aka you are harvesting and packaging wet greens. Try to dial in your watering so they get harvested dry!

IDK, your etch-a-sketch logo says nothing about food to me. We used to make those by hand and it was a real accomplishment to make a perfect one. It's what math nerds do when not getting bullied, 60 - 70 years ago, before TV was really a thing. Hard to make the connection from math to food. Just saying, I see you are at a pretty high standard, soo...

I think there is a very big connection between math and food, math and nature. And that "etch-a-sketch" design is actually the fundamental shape all nature in the universe takes on! Look up a "Torus" or "Torroid" or "Torroidal Flow." Thanks for noticing my high standards 😉

I've seen a lot of other microgreens and greens farmers talk about the quick-cut greens harvester, but it seems like it would damage/bruise the microgreens, which is something you said not to do. Do you have a take on this? Thanks!
