3 ways to strengthen the head voice
Hello, my musical friends! I’m Madeleine Harvey and thank you so much for checking out this video. Today, we’re going to be talking about 3 ways that you can strengthen your head voice and sing high with power! It’s my hope that by the end of today’s video, you’ll have a better understanding of and greater access to this huge part of your voice! If you like this video, please give it a thumbs up and click the subscribe button below…I’d love to see you here all the time!
The head voice, as a register is really tricky for a lot of singers. Mainly because it exists outside of that grounded feeling that we are so accustomed to with our speech. Chest voice is much easier because it’s right in that speaking zone. Oftentimes, we feel that can’t control head voice, or hold onto it. A lot of singers have nightmares about head voice because it tends to showcase those inconsistencies in their sound. Such as wobbling, breaking and breathiness. Because of this, certain compensations are developed such as tension, gripping, spreading or even just ignoring the head voice altogether.
But here are 3 ways that you can strengthen the head voice and sing high with power.
1. Awaken the space in your face
The head voice resonates within the nasal cavity. And in order to maximize the vibrations from head voice, we have to know how to awaken that part of our resonating system, so that the flow can feed into that space effortlessly. Oftentimes, this is where people struggle. If you find that your head voice is unstable, it’s partly because the resonance isn’t as focused. It could be falling backwards into more of a classical sound. Or the resonance may not be open at all resulting in the lifting of your larynx or a labored sound. So you’ll need to feel that sensation of your face stretching on the inside and keep that space as active in your experience as you can until it becomes a new habit. Really aim your sound into your face.
• Hmmm - Lift like you ate something good. - This focuses the tone forward.
2. Lift the soft pallet
A great way to bring more focus and clarity into your head voice is to lift the soft pallet. A great way to feel this is to act as if you are holding back a laugh. Feel the space right behind your top back teeth open and lift. This will really help with keeping you tone clear and present. Just like awakening the space in the face, you’ll have to concentrate on keeping this sensation as active in your experience as you can until it becomes a new habit.
(Demonstrate the difference in neutral vs lifted. Huh taps.)
3. Close the cords
Another excellent way to strengthen your head voice is through cord closure. This will add crispness and vitality to your head voice. A good way to initiate cord closure is to grunt slightly almost like a monkey. Feel how slightly you can bring your cords together. As you play with this sound, you may be tempted to overcompensate with tons of weight, but I encourage you to surrender that weight for balance as you work to develop this clean feeling. You can always go back, and add a little more substance once you have become comfortable.

I love the way you explain everything. You're the only voice teacher who tackles the psychological parts of singing as well as the technical to form a whole image. I cannot stress how much your advice helps me, but you seem to understand how it feels to be insecure with one's own image/voice on a subconscious level. That takes your advice to a whole new level, and I feel like I can benefit from this a lot. Thanks!

Thank you so much Mike! This was just so spot on! Yes, I feel that in order to be an artist, we have to understand the entire human experience. Singing for me, isn't about projecting perfection, but embracing all those fears and jumping beyond myself. That whole concept is the reason why voice continues to inspire me. I'm so happy to hear that you are concentrating on this growth within yourself! Thank you so much for sharing this! Totally made my day!
@mikemuller2192

About a year ago, I noticed that my voice wasn't really "me". I was singing well, but people who know how to listen really well and can critique voices would tell me I wasn't expressing myself fully. I never really understood how, because I thought I was singing with feeling and it sounded technically good to me. Then one time, I was thinking about how my voice feels trapped so I googled and found your video "Why does your singing voice feel trapped or stuck?". Everything just clicked at once, and I realized how I wasn't really expressing me. I was so insecure about criticism that I just started copying how others sing without making it my own. I took a while to get used to this new feeling of singing through myself, and I know I can do it effortlessly. That's so awesome that it made you feel better about what you do, because you need to know you practically gave someone a voice. As someone who sings, you should know that that's a very precious gift. So thanks again!

Thank you so much, I've sang for more than 10 years now and I have never "felt" my headvoice when teachers were explaining it. My falsetto skill is way too good in making a full sound as well, but I have NEVER been able to connect it to my chest voice. Something always felt off. With your exercise I have for the FIRST TIME accessed my head voice and descended down to my chest voice while staying connected!! Thank you soooo much!!!! I feel like this will open up an entire new world of singing ability for me!

Thank you for this step-by-step for head voice, from an older singer (soprano)! I've enjoyed your explanations and examples of how to engage all parts to get to a solid head voice. And I am using your exercises along with those of my own voice teacher. Having not been doing the amount of (classical) singing I used to, and with several sometimes longish breaks in between, it's not as easy as it used to be, but I am now beginning to understand what "everyone" who tried to teach me "back then", what this is really all about! hahaha!

Great teaching. Instead of showing off how good you are at head voice already, you understand that some folks came here to learn and haven't mastered it yet. I didn't even know it was head voice I was having problems with, but falsetto I thought. I decided to start practicing singing while I drive all around town, but realized my falsetto is weak and needs work. But probably what really needs work is head voice. Thanks Madeleine!
