Literally the best video on this procedure that I've found on KZfaq, and absolutely no surprise that it comes from yourself Andrew! Quick tip for anybody that doesn't have a large framing square is to measure corner to corner with a tape measure or long rule. It needs a bit more mental juggling to figure which way to knock the frame into square of course. Cheers!

I'm looking to fold fabric over a frame the same way you are folding your canvas... or something like it. I really like how you have done it with the linen. My fabrics are not stiff from paint so it's a bit of a different problem but I'm think I can use a lot of what you do for this. I hope so.. thanks so much for the clear instructions.

Great example. I actually Never ever used that method in my many paintings lol. I prefer this classic way. I have always buy frames to a local carpenter and then I stretch the canvas...and that because the structure frames I use dont require framing because they are usually 2 inches thick.....love how they look. But looking fwd to use this method you show asap. Salutatuons from Baja.

I am a great fan of Andrew Tischler's, but there is one problem here. If, at the corners, you staple the canvas from one stretcher bar to the stretcher bar adjacent to it, the stretchers cannot expand and keep the canvas taught. The stapled canvas keeps the corners together, and the keys can't function. This is easily avoided, as long as you're aware of it.

Hi Andrew - great videos. I notice that Russell Fine Arts (below) asked you about your preference for stretched canvas/linen or panels to which you replied "both". I usually use stretched canvas but was impressed with your video about making panels with Belgian linen glued on. I often "cruise" junk/op shops looking for good frames and find that panels - which can be cut to size beforehand - useful. I'd really like to have your opinion regarding relative benefits or constraints for both options - also relative to framing, storage, exhibition, and saleability. Thanks.

Mr Tischler, I've seen people use a "canvas pulling tool". Is Belgian linen too delicate to use such a tool on, or do the wedges replace the need for this tool? Thanks for these videos they are much appreciated I really liked the pet one! I really have trouble refining work.....any tips on how to make work more finished would be greatly appreciated? Cheers from Sydney
@AndrewTischlerArt
@AndrewTischlerArt 7 жыл бұрын
Hey there, you can use canvas pliers. The linen should be plenty strong enough to pull on with this tool. In terms of how to finish work, I think this point of resolve is something every artist has to come to on their own. It's like finding your won style. I generally feel the work is refined enough when nothing can be added and no improvements can be made.

Hi, Andrew, I found this short clip that you kindly shared with us. I know you like Belgium Linen, however, how do you feel about the use of less expensive linens for tighter budgets. Earlier I asked the question of picking from different qualities of linen and what to look for. I read that the linen should be , at the least, from 8-10 oz. weight , oil primed for the most brilliant colors, and non absorbent surface. I saw primed linen by Centurion OP DLX , Master Quality Archival Linen rolls which was easier to afford. I am not a professional, but, enjoy painting with quality materials where I get the best that I can manage cost wise. This brand is 11 oz, medium weight. What guidance can you give on this ? Thank you for these clips, please keep them coming! Theresa

Also, why is using stretched canvas on cardboard discouraged. What are the pitfall if any … say, quality of the glue used?

I think that's good if you want to work with uncommon dimensions or if you want to have the whole experience. Also maybe you want to use other material which isn't available as a pre-made canvas - and I'm pretty sure it's cheaper, so if you want to use high quality material you're going to save money if you assemble the whole thing yourself.

I have the problem you can see in this video but with a already stretched and painted canvas on: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bJOZnqeVqdrJYHk.html As you can see, it´s a bend frame due to heat. @AndrewTischlerArt
@AndrewTischlerArt 7 жыл бұрын
OMG do not do this! I don't recommend what this chap is doing in the video at all. Wow. No. It's difficult to ascertain the level of the bend but you can sure it up from the back side with a rigid support, and attach it somehow, otherwise framing would help this. A strong frame should fix it.
