I realize that this is an older video but I just came across it. I've struggled with my long irons for a long time. Went to the range, did this drill and 15 balls later I was hitting them off the grass straight and true every time. You've literally saved me 3-4 strokes off every round because I never would've approached it like this. Thanks so much!

oh yea we were cleaning out the house cuz we are moving and i found a like 12-15 year olf driver and so i got a range ball lined it up on the front side of the lawn and we have like a 150 yard lawn and so i tried hitting off deck and it came natural and i hit it straighter than off a tee and better than iron propped on a tee so anything under 180 from the tee box i hit off the deck with 3 wood or driver maybe even a hybrid

Thank you so much for your videos, This is my fourth year golfing (50 yrs old in Oct) and KZfaq has taught me everything. These last two weeks I ran into a number of 4 iron shots and up until this I have rarely used it. I was absolutely terrible. So yesterday I watched this video. Today I hit my 4 iron straight and 185-195 all three times I used it. I am blown away at how easy it was. Thank you.

Great advice! I was warming up with all my clubs and once I got to my 4 iron I noticed a huge change in contact. Tried this advice and after 3 trips to the range it has set in and clicked. Only hit 20 incredibly embarrassing shots off the grass tee’s. But it was a great conversation starter for all the 8 handicaps around me. Haha, thanks Rick!

I'm the opposite. 7 iron is good from 140-160 and I've cranked it over 180. Mostly though, my 6 will go about 170, my 5 will go about 180 if I hit it right, and my 4 and 3 irons wouldn't sniff 200 yards unless I'm hitting off a tee, and even then it's pushing it. My 4 hybrid is my go-to when I'm 200 yards or more out.

When I was about 14 years old, I was taught TO STRIKE DOWN ON THE BALL with irons, to basically hit them as if I was trying to chop the back 1/8 of the ball off. It seemed to be good advice at the time because it totally changed my approach to hitting irons and I got positive results almost immediately. Prior to this I had been sweeping the ball with my irons and getting no spin. The person taught me this on a little 100 yd. Par 3. Instead of teeing up an inch and sweeping the ball with my 9i or Pw, I tee'd it just above the turf and the results were phenomenal. Much more spin and a much higher, straighter ball flight. My long and mid iron shots are the most solid part of my game. I still use a 2i and I don't carry any hybrids. Just Driver and 3 or 4 wood or both. I'm going to try out your method and see what occurs.

I have been struggling with the long irons. I went to hybrids. I find the hybrids are much easier to hit...I was reviewing why the long irons are so difficult especially for older golfers when i came across this video. Well, I played yesterday and at the range warming up i took out the 5 iron, placed the ball opposite the armpit-left shoulder, and like magic I was hitting my 5 iron really well. During the round, numerous times I hit my 5 and 6 great. This is a fantastic tip.

Great tip Rick! Gonna try this one out next time I'm at the range. I usually carry irons 4-PW, and have generally employed a Callaway "heavenwood" 7 wood as I really don't like hybrids. Don't have much confidence with below a 4 iron but I'm considering picking up a callaway apex forged 21 degree 3 driving iron and giving that a go instead of my 7 wood or the dreaded hybrid!

Long irons being problematic, I searched high and low for the most forgiving set of irons on the market. I ended up with Wilson Staff d350's. They have a great feel, even with the occasional miss hit, and the long irons feel very much like hybrids. Easy to hit, and the ball goes a mile. I demo'd many brands and couldn't hit any other club like I hit the d350's. Rick's video lessons are indispensable!

Another trick that has been helping me overcome my tendency to swing to steeply lately is thinking about my spine angle at address and in my backswing. I've found that if I angle it slightly away from my target, I don't smack the ground as often and am able to swing more freely (ESPECIALLY with a driver, but it has also helped with low irons). Nice video though, I'll have to give my low irons a go off the tee next time I'm at the range
