HOW TO STUDY FOR TESTS: Getting 90% On Every Test Using Active Recall; Pro Study Tips!!
This video goes over the four main steps I undergo when I am studying for a test and how I study for a test in the most effective way possible. This is founded on evidence-based study tips(links below), using active recall and effective practice techniques which make the best of our capabilities as learners, and make the best of our time to study for tests the best way possible. The structure follows the UMPR format;
Understand - 1:15
Memorize - 3:53
Practice - 6:55
Reflect - 9:10
This structure really allows me to be confident whenever I go into a test as I have an established study routine, as should you, and has allowed me to get a consistent 7 in every biology and chemistry test over the past two years of doing the IB diploma.
This structure applies mainly to science tests, or tests with traditional structures, and isn’t what I use when studying for an essay-based subject or when studying for large exam where large quantities of information need to be absorbed.

Hey! I absolutely LOVE your channel! It’s provided such immense motivation considering I’ve been feeling a little down going into the second year of the IB! Would you consider sharing your Anki decks with your viewers? Those would be priceless resources that we’d be so grateful for! Of course it’s alright if you’re not comfortable with doing so Xx all the best w everything :)

Hey! I'm so glad I managed to reach you in this way! That is definitely a possibility, however my anki decks are very personalised for me, and the way I think and do questions, so they often aren't totally suitable for everyone. However, if I get more requests for this I would be willing to maybe give them a touch up and fill in some areas which are a bit sparse(topics which I didn't feel I needed them) and possibly make these available. All the best and good luck with year 2 of the IB!

In the understanding part, how do you keep track of what you understand? It takes me a lot longer to understand it usually since I make revision cards (making flashcards immediately can make me lose my trail of thought, this usually means i don't end up making flashcards). I also tend to go into a lot of detail into each point, to try understand this but this is very time cosuming.What do you recommend for these 2 things?Also should we do exam questions as we are trying to learn and what websites do you recommend for questions? I would really appreciate an answer :)
@MarkosDrakos
@MarkosDrakos Жыл бұрын
I think the best way to keep track of what you understand is to test yourself. When learning something, try to explain it out loud without looking at your notes. Imagine you need to explain the concept to someone that knows nothing about the subject. If you are able to do this, then you understand the concept, if not, you don't. You might also be trying to do too much at once. Break large ideas down into single concepts, make sure you understand the individual concepts, and then maybe make a mindmap or something that ties these all together. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions!

Nice viedo! For a new KZfaqr your editing is sick. I was just wondering, did you memorise every past paper and mark scheme for biology and chemistry? Like either memorise the mark schemes of every topic first (for topic tests) then eventually memorise the entire lot?
@MarkosDrakos
@MarkosDrakos 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'm still very much a beginner tho so it's very far from perfect. Noooo, I definitely didn't do that, there would be little point to memorising mark schemes. Instead, I analysed how the markschemes attribute marks to different types of questions within topics, so that I understand the rationale examiners use to make the markschemes. Then, when doing a test/exam, I knew how the markscheme worked so I could get the most points out of each question. That's what I mean by "learn the markscheme" Memorising particular markschemes and particular questions is way too time inefficient, I would not recommend that.

@@MarkosDrakos Sorry but I'm confused as to what you mean by attributing marks. Like learn the key words in the question or....? Thanks!
@zakmurray8097
@zakmurray8097 4 жыл бұрын
@@synced8014 he is saying that marks get attributed in a question for saying / mentioning different things. So essentially he'll look at the question then look at how the question is marked and where each mark comes from. After that, he will have a rough idea when answering certain types of questions what terms to mentiom to get marks for a question.

You can use these techniques, I would recommend taking things topic by topics, and going through the whole study framework for each topic as if you were studying for an individual topic test. Then, do full past papers and do the practice and reflect stages using the full papers. I'm glad you enjoyed it!!

Thanks for the video, I wanted to ask you about Anki, when do you make the flashcards, like for example if one day I want to study 10 pages of content, should I first read, understand, practice through active recall and then create the flashcards or not even try to memorize and directly create flashcards while reading for the first time the material
@MarkosDrakos
@MarkosDrakos 3 жыл бұрын
Right, I now normally make the flashcards when I am watching lectures(for uni) literally as a form of note taking. I do this by putting questions into notion and then just converting everything into cards. You can do it both ways. You can try to create the flashcards upon first contact, and then use them when doing the memorising stage. What this would mean is you take a long time in the understanding phase, where you try to learn the concepts and make the cards simultaneously. This is what I have been doing for the last few months at uni and it has been working for me. You can also just try to understand things first, then go through everything again and make a deck of cards on the second round. Either way, as long as you actually practice the cards, which is where the magic of active recall happens, you should be fine. Trying to memorise comes from practicing these cards, and it can be extremely efficient. You can totally memorise a block of 10 pages worth of content in 2 hours with anki. I would then suggest for you to practice with questions or essays(however you are gonna be examined) after having memorised stuff using anki. Hope this helps!
