I don't want to sound full of myself, but my biggest issue with my body shape is that it's too sexy, anything I wear makes me look like a porn star and it's annoying with all the stares and rude comments you get from men. Not long ago, fishnet stockings where back in style, and I love them, but all my friends looked edgy and cool and I looked like a stripper . Also I love casual, laid back and oversized clothes, but I look obese when I wear them. My go-to is a crop top, high waisted jeans and an oversized jacket. If you want to wear something loose, just wear one loose item at the time, big shirt with leggings, loose skirt with tight top, and so on.

Marthe Tanghe haha same!!! My sister is very small and dainty and rocks her fishnets, while I immediately look like mega porn. Also no red dresses for me, as for some reason I ALWAYS look like a Eastern European hooker as soon as I wear one 😐

Marthe Tanghe same! worst is when people say that you're trying to "show off". I had been picked on before for dressing "to sexy". I had spent a year using long shirts and baggy pants. those same people accused me of being fat (I am the same weight as before). Now I dress how I want, usually leggings a tank top and a cardigan and I fell great!

Marthe Tanghe same, tho! High waisted jeans are the only ones that will fit my but without falling off my waist. And I totally agree with your one-loose-item rule. If I wear a loose too and bottom it makes me look fat. I also always try to accentuate my waist even when wearing loose stuff to avoid making my stomach look big. For example I'll wear a loose sweater that is cinched at the bottom and falls higher, or a skirt/pants that are worn high waisted even if they're flowy.

It is so hard to find something that fits perfectly. It is either too big for the waist or too small for the breasts. I prefer strechy fabrics because of that.

Hi Mika! I've had the same problem, then I started designing and sewing my own clothes when I was 19. I've been looking awesome for the last 10 years! I suggest you do the same if you have a passion for it. Or, try to find a seamstress. Best of luck.

I'm tall X and best pieces of my wardrobe are handmade by myself. I'm not good at sewing but difference between store brought compared to what fits me is so wast that I don't care how crappy my seams look. To all X women out there listen to Justine and tailor your most worn good quality pieces! It is cheap and quick to take clothes in.

Strechy fabrics are the key to success as an hourglass. I'd recommend wearing crop tops, or either tying a knot in the shirt at the waistline or tucking it your bottoms, that always have to be high waisted, with low waist you'll only look fat and will make your waist look bigger some how. Try out fanshionnova jeans, they're the only ones who fit me right in the waist and the butt

@Hella Green: look for maybe more expensive brands if you haven't already. levi's has really good high waisted jeans for example. they are expensive but at least they fit you well and if the quality is good they're gonna stay with you for a long time :D i started to buy almost exclusively levi's because they fit me very well and the high waists make my small waist stand out even more. i still need to wear belts though because the waist is too loose, but i quite like it because when i eat a lot i can adjust the belt and not feel like i might explode out of my jenas every second ;)

I have an hourglass figure and I find that in general, vintage clothing is far better suited to the hourglass body type than most new clothing I buy. For whatever reason, the lines and cuts of pieces from the 80s and before are more flattering and a little more modest. The same goes for vintage styles like high waisted pieces.

A girlfriend of mine once commented that I turn every dress into 'porn' when we were out shopping for clothes. That's one of the reasons why I hate dresses, I wear trousers pretty much every day of the year. When I was in my early 20s I struggled with my hourglass shape the most. All I wanted was to wear baggy ripped jeans and oversized sweaters and t-shirts. With my big boobs and round hips this look just made me look fat. Also developed a habit of moving my shoulders forward so that my breasts would look smaller. Hated the stares I would get from men every time I wore something more fitted. Now that I'm in my early 30s I've learned to accept and work my curves more but in my heart I'll always be a skinny skater girl 😉

I do that thing with the shoulders too. I don‘t do it on purpose but I started doing it as a teen and now I‘m just used to it. I was told that I dress revealing in my teens when I wore the same things as some of my peers with smaller boobs. Now i like having bigger boobs for my rather small frame but the shoulder thing is still with me haha

I have an hourglass shape, and I am disproportionately wide for my short frame. I find that when I wear loose clothing that doesn't show my waist, I look much heavier than i am, because the clothes just fall off of my wide shoulders, and my bust, and the silhouette is pushed out even further by my hips, and butt. In those outfits you can see all of my biggest features, but not my body's only exception to the big theme, which is my waist. In the past, I've thought that perhaps Sophia Vergara always shows her waist to avoid looking heavier than she really is. I'd love to wear straight lines and loosely fitted clothing, but I can't seem to make it work without looking significantly heavier. What am I doing wrong?

+Liz Tans hi, knitted fabrics are your friend: for example a rather fitted, sleeveless jersey dress will expand at the level of your hips but stay loose at the level of your waist. Use the stretchiness of knits to your advantage 😉

Hey, I know it's a bit late but I feel you. All those comfy looking loose clothing options make me look boxy and as you said way heavier than I really am. For me the solution is easy: stick with one loose item at the time. Like if I wear a long loose skirt, I would pair it with a tight shirt or blouse at the top - or the other way around a loose mini dress (so my legs are still showing) or tight jeans/leggins and a wide sweater :) Also belts and rippons around the waist are an easy way to get your shape back without losing the comfort of loose clothing!

You are not doing anything wrong, Liz! It sounds typical for this body shape. When I was younger, I found that dressing like the other kids was extremely frustrating, since my figure was so feminine (i.e. mature-looking) that I couldn't pull off the graphic T-shirts and other styles the other girls were wearing. It made me feel ugly (!) since I tried to fit in, but ended up looking ridiculous instead. I should have rocked blazers and fitted leather jackets when I was in school, even though that's not exactly what the others were wearing. As I enter middle age, I find that my stomach is getting a little bigger (just a little at this point), which brings me closer to a rectangle (technically, with the measuring tape). However, I find that the hourglass styles are still best for me, for some reason... Maybe because my waist is still much smaller than average by comparison (with other women my age). If I don't enhance the waist, it makes me look frumpy and 10 years older. More to the point, I find that wearing a loose top under a fitted (or peblum) jacket, blazer or coat allow me to follow the current styles, while "cheating" to respect my body shape. Inversely, if a I wear a boxy sweater, it will work if I nevertheless find a way to mimick my now-hidden figure, for instance by wearing a skater skirt or puffy A-line skirt with the sweater. You can't really escape from being an hourglass, esp. if you have extreme proportions. You will look like a boss in a suit in the office, but looking young and modern requires a little more work than for the girls with a boyish figure.

The other tricky aspect of determining if we truly have an hourglass figure is how to define hourglass by the waist-to-hip ratio. Some sources insist that an hourglass figure must have an ideal waist to hip ratio is 0.67, which is what I used to have up to the end of my 20s, even after having a child (if memory serves). However, the waist does expand a little with the years. Now that I entered pre-menopause, I have a waist-to-hip ratio of 0.76. Depending on the sources I consult, I either get categorized as a ruler (rectangular) or an hourglass. Based on the styles that look best on me, I think that the sources that give a range (e.g. from 0.67 to 0.8) are probably more accurate for the purposes of determining the styles of clothing that will look best. I still don't look great in styles meant for rulers/bananas/rectangles! We are not talking about competing in fitness competitions, here.

Also, to add to my previous comment, I would say that the square-shaped silhouette is an ABSOLUTE no-no on a larger hour-glass figure. Just NO. It makes you look fat and frumpy. On a thinner woman, perhaps, but I don't see it doing much for them either. On a larger woman, it just makes you look like a lump. It's far better to just go with the A-line instead, for dresses and skirts, or with a well-fitting skinny jeans that ISN'T low-rise to tuck the tummy in a bit if you want to wear pants. I usually pair such jeans with a flowy top that I cinch in at the waist with a belt, so it shows off all the right curves but sort of flows over the lower belly and completely conceals it.

Justine Leconte officiel I did ^_^ it was really good, as was this one, but I ASSURE you from personal experience (and the experience of two other hour-glass in-betweenies, I.e. women who are neither skinny or large), that the minute you wear a square-shaped anything on a larger hour-glass, you've doomed yourself to going around looking like a lump😂 although that might not be too bad if you feel over-sexualised in today's world, come to think of it...:D

MMLakhani89 Agree...I'm just barely plus sized now, but even when I was much thinner, anything loose in the waist only served to make me look dumpy and much heavier. It's the big hips part of the equation - if there's no emphasis on the contrast of the small waist, you just look big all over and shapeless.

I totally agree. I look HUGE if I wear boxy clothes (plus I feel frumpy) and overalls make me look pregnant. Every time I wear them people would ask me when I was due! The slope of the breast make the bib drape so far from my body that even wearing fitted t-shirt barely helps. :o/ Now I save them for painting and yard work. :o)

I'm an hourglass shape and if you don't know how to dress properly, since we have big hips and boobs we might look bigger or rounded than we actually are, it's awesome when you feel like wearing tight clothes, but on lazy days loose clothes like: pants, t shirts, long t shirts, jeans w/low cut or simple baggy clothes (my favorite) honestly they 'll make look like 5 pounds heavier .. the key of success for me is: High waisted jeans, leggings, t shirts with waist shape, or tucked shirts (if it's loose) everything goes around your waist, if we lose that balance, we look like a big bulk hahaha.. I think all body types are gorgeous, I see advantages in every single one of them, so let's make the best of them 💖 Love your channel by the way 😊 I'm new here! I agree with a lot of my fellow hourglass' posts! I love my shape, but do agree that it is so nice to be able to reign in on the natural sexiness of one's figure. Because my chest is more sizeable, I minimize my shape by wearing clothes with more angular lines and staying away from circles (especially prints). I stay away from scoop neck tops and choose V's and find that cardigans, jackets, and blazers are flattering ways to avoid looking like you are trying to attract others.

Shelley, me too! i find that having a ruched style dress that clings to the waist, but is not cinched or seamed at waist, but instead is either not seamed horizontally or is seamed lower at hip and then flows from the hip line to a midi length makes me look taller. My take is that structured seams right at the waist tend to make me look shorter as they visually cut me in half.

I'm getting a bit obsessed with your videos! You have such great knowledgeable down-to-earth advice! My tips for dressing my hourglass shape are as follows: Tops: (I always bring in the waist on any top I own, even if it's just an inch on each side) I stick to a lot of crepe tops for day to night transitions, they're comfy and flattering on my body. For more work/formal wear I like to wear very constructed stiffer button ups (example: tuxedo cuts, pin tucks, utility cut) Sweaters are always tailored too. Pants: I like straight legged and I tailor the bottoms in slightly tighter to make my short legs appear longer I also like cigarette cuts but I buy them slightly larger and bring in the waist, nothing worse than pants that always shift and is constantly migrating south. Skirts: I only wear pencil skirts just below my knees. Dresses: I wear 3 types and always stick to these. 1: Yoke tops with an A-line bottom. 2. Wrap dresses 3. Maxi-dresses with an empire waist. and finally my favourite clothing piece the jacket (I feel like I have strong jacket game) I love a long swing jacket with any type of collar (I have 4 jackets in this shape), I love a crop but with long shirts under it, and of course a great blazer or heavy blazer but that looks flattering on everything as it hides a multitude of sins!

I feel like I am coming late to the party. For me, I agree. The square shape is a huge, no. It makes me look pregnant due to my large boobs. I don't think the belted look works for me because it cuts my body in half. I am not a huge fan of the umpire waist either because it often makes it look like I could be pregnant with it being so loose. I like to to be fitted to my waist and loosely skim over my body all the way down. I too have avoided cleavage bearing tops due to the stares and unwanted attention. I have found that I can go for a looser top the mostly fitted over my boobs and has a relaxed fit that skims over my waist and stomach is perfect. I have found great ones at Target believe it or not. One thing I find annoying is that button up shirts, unless they have many darts, are incredibly unflattering. They gap/pucker in the boob area and are baggy elsewhere. I have had great luck finding fitted/tailored tops at Ann Taylor and White House Black Market. The material is stretchy and molds to my curves. The best part is that it is great for work and the material is high quality so you don't need an underlayer. Thank goodness, I am always warm

I have biiiig breasts and a bigger bum-hips but small waist and I also like to hide the sexy curves when I go to work or on a normal day but the thing is I look much much heavier then. People will even comment, when I wear more fitted clothes: Oh, you lost weight! (no I didn't) For jeans, I also like to go for higher waist. Being an hourglass shape can turn your classic outfit into something over-sexual and I don't necessarely want that, all the time.

I have the same problem. A tiny waist and ginormous boobs (60J in EU size). I love wearing simple, tight tank-tops, but whenever I wear them outside people are staring and looking at my boobs all the time. It's frustrating. I don't mind my waist showing, but I don't want my boobs showing all the time. A tip for hiding them is wearing loose high-wasted skirts/shorts in the summer with a bigger tee or a looser tank top. You hide your breasts a little, but still show off your waist and legs (so you won't look so heavy). In winter I usually go for thicker fabrics that goes in at the waist just a little bit and skinny jeans. The thick fabric doesn't make your boobs so obvious, but, again, you don't look heavier. Tight long-sleeved tops paired with a scarf is also good. It shows off your waist, but the scarf hides the boobs :) If you feel like your problem area is your breasts, then go for darker colors on top. It gives you a slimmer look and removes a few cups on your boobs. If you want to make your butt smaller, go for darker colors on bottom, and also wear loose fitting skirts/shorts.

Same problem here! Too much boob is just not a classy look for me. A plunging neckline on me just looks like I want to be a porn star. I find that a good bra does wonders - I prefer the ones that make the breast a bit more pointy, because that actually looks quite slimming on me. Not the flat foamy t-shirt-styles.

If it's cool enough out, adding a light blazer that stays open will make you slightly more boxy. Even a linen unstructured one over one of your cute sexy "boob tops"(any Tshirt or tank that brings the girls attention) Or you could go with a loose silky camisole under said blazer. Super chic and sexy in a less form fitting way.

High waisted everything!! It can be a bummer to get the waist part to fit perfectly (and that's where your advise for tailor's comes in, here most shops offer that and it's also pretty easy to find a tailor shop on the street) I like highwaisted bottoms because although the accentuate your shape, if you put a more lose shirt tucket in and let it flow (or just use it without tucking in) it cuts attention from that area. I use this because although i have an hourglass shape I'm a bit on the chubby belly side and this way I feel confident because I can hide my belly a bit. PS: it's super fun to read everyone's comments, writting everything down!!

I’m an hourglass, I wear a lot of stretchy fabrics because it’s the only thing that seems to fit right. When I buy jeans, i buy ones that fit me in the hip and have the waist tailored down to fit me. Same with shirts. I buy shirts that fit my bust and tailor the down the waist or depending on where I’m going, I’ll make a knot in the back or the shirt or wear crop tops.

What do you do if you're hourglass AND petite? Wearing loose clothing looks boxy and drabby, n'est pas?
@l6318

I'm both. I'm also in a weird situation because have a chronic gastric condition that can make my belly very bloated and round, despite my small waist, so tight tops simply won't work sometimes. I usually reserve playing up my hourglass figure for more formal settings. My daily "uniform" is leggings/skinny jeans with a loose or flowy top (tunic length, if paired with leggings, I don't like the leggings-as-pants thing). To keep my tops from looking like I'm wearing a circus tent, I usually wear unlined bras or bralettes that minimize my bust (I'm only a C-cup, so I can get away with this, but any bigger and I think it would be inadvisable). Regular bras with molding or padding tend to make my bust look bigger, rounder, and higher, hence the circus tent thing. The result is that, on a daily basis, I tend to look a little more boyish than my natural figure could be easily tailored to, but I like it, it's comfy, it can be dressed up, and I can always play up my hourglass shape if I feel like it...and my tummy cooperates :-)

I have an hour glass figure and I love to wear high-waisted skinny jeans. Usually jeans that fit my bum won't fit my waist. It used to be such a big problem for me, but then I found this style and I would never go back to a normal waist again! It's very feminine and versatile. Pair it with colored converse to look hipster; pair it with kitten heels for a night out! :) I also love colorful,or print high-waist skirts with a single color, rounded neckline shirt (usually flowy, light weight material) tucked in. This is usually my style uniform. I love skirts because they can be as girly or as down played as you feel like on any particular occasion. I'm all for flexibility when it comes to my wardrobe.

Now as a big girl with an hourglass shape, I really love how boot-cut jeans, especially from Torrid (which is made for plus sizes) and those cut with really noticeable curves look great on me, and also if you're buying something like a beach dress or maxi dress, go for ones with a tie or belt, or accessorize with one, play it up if you so choose! Also, at least for a big girl like me, I tend to focus on my waist because its the smallest part, but remember when you tighten anything at your waist, your bust and hips will look even bigger girls!!

i am a short and quite curvy hourglass, especially for my size, and i find the best way to go about finding clothes is to shop vintage or vintage look, dresses styled for the 30-50s tend to hang around he knee while also maintaining shape on the torso with a belt as part of the design for easy wear. its comfortable without sacrificing the femininity of the figure but also conservative enough that its not bam skin tight dress all the time which makes it good for workwear.

I'm not a rectangle either because I also have a thin waist. @Loribyn
@Loribyn 6 жыл бұрын
You're an hourglass if - and only if - your bust and hip measurements are *within* 2" of each other, and your waist is 10" or more smaller than either. If your hips are *more* than 2 inches bigger than your bust, you're a pear.

Smaller bust and hourglass, generally because the bust didn't grow as it should've.. I have the same issue, but yeah my shoulders are the same width as hips... it's annoying cos some people can mistake us for a pear... but pears, bells and skittles usually have thick ankles or thick legs the whole way down.. where as I have skinny ankles and slim calves... so I know I'd be an hourglass... plus the widest looking part of my hips is on my hips, where as a pears widest looking part will be their thighs... so they usually have normal sized hips with big thighs, where as hourglasses have wide hips and big thighs, so it kind of blends in more together, compared to the pear where it's not really a rounded look between the hips and thighs it's more like smaller hips and bigger thighs.. so yeah that's my observation anyway

I love how you refer to our body type as perfect, you're awesome! My secret to looking slim & slender is an A-line summer dress (a little above knee) with a minimizing bra. "Skinny" can be hard to do with a shorter torso! I found the bigger my breasts look, the "fatter" I look in pictures, so I have to remind myself 125 lbs is perfectly fine for 5'5"...the camera does add weight that is not there! (also, dress should cover cleavage & hit a bit below collarbone)

I'm an hourglass with very little space between my bust and waist, so I have to wear mid-rise bottoms and narrow belts or my bust looks droopy. This also means I can't wear loose tops without looking pregnant, so everything has to fit or at least skim my waist. I never wear crew necklines or turtlenecks, always scoop and v-necklines. And since I'm short, I prefer knee-length skirts - although I can get away with longer skirts if they're slim and worn with heels.

I'm 51 years old, 5'4" and measure 38-26-39 I love to wear swing dresses! They accent my waist, blur my hips and depending on the sleeve options, either flatter my shoulders or subtle cleavage, etc. I never wear cap sleeves though, makes my upper arms look too large. And almost always wear a belt in a contrasting, but complementary color. (Like black with red) I also find it much more flattering to have the hem fall about 3-4" above the knee, longer is ok too, but mid thigh or mini makes me look shorter. I like to wear a modest heel, or even Converse with bobby socks. But the point is, I get the most compliments and feel super cute and youthful in 50's style dresses. (plus, with a bigger butt, I like the freedom of fabric flowing around my bottom half rather than suffocating jeans! especially when I dance!

Thanks for the info and the french perspective! I definitely tend to play down my hour glass shape, especially for everyday clothing and casual. I like to go for flowy/looser tops and tighter bottoms, kind of like what a lot of people do with dark legging/jeggings and a flowy tunic top. I find dolman sleeves particularly flattering and comfortable on me, it seems to be really slimming. I really like wearing skinny jeans, sometimes I do wear wide leg jeans, but then will wear a top a little more fitted, though no too tight. I don't love wearing things tight on my hip and top, maybe I have yet to find a way to do it right that makes me feel comfortable and feel good. For dressing up, I do like dresses that accentuate the waist, and tend to flow loosely over the hips. I don't mind a dress that is fitted on top with a flattering neckline, like a faux-wrap neckline, accentuated waist, and flowing bottom. If the dress is kind of shapeless like a sack, I will either belt if or put on a cardigan to add some shape.

I have spent most of my morning watching your videos - I am finding them fascinating, informative and inspirational! As for my body type, I would consider myself a "soft" hourglass in that my waist is less than 10" smaller than my bust and hips; nonetheless, this is my basic shape. For me, I have found that softer fabrics are slenderizing and that some sort of draping is extremely feminine (I am *not* interested in looking "sexy" - but rather, "feminine"). I like to use silky tank tops or shirts that are belted under a soft jacket so that my curves are still there, yet not emphasized. Suit blouses that have gently draping fabric are awesome, cowl necks are graceful, and boat necks are amazingly flattering, while keeping my look feminine rather than sexy.

Thank you so much for this advice, it really helps to style my wardrobe better (I do not have a good sense of style.) However, can you please do a video for short, hourglass figures? I'm petite and I have a good hourglass figure so I usually have to get shirts that is way over sized just to fit over my bust. Then I always look fat around the middle because the shirt is too big and my arms tend to drown. I do like to wear a short fitted jacket as this brings out my waist a bit more.

People used to think that having an hourglass figure is like a blessing and girls with that kind of body type can wear just any peace. Here I've got a question. There are different types of girls: they can be high, medium, petite, have hourglass, pear, rectangle (etc.) shaped bodies. And there are tons of different types of dresses (straight cut, with high waist, trapeze dresses, dresses with defined waistlines). What kinds of dresses are appropriate for high and petite girls with different body shapes? Because, usually what works for petite, does not work for high girls and vice versa. It makes shopping really confusing, esp. as many clothes is made for someone very average (+/- 170cm, 36B, straight figure), which means the cut chosen is, in fact, the one that becomes best someone having this very average body type + hight (Luckyyou, girls =) ). So, what kinds of dresses become high and petite girls considering different body shapes?

Justine mentioned this in another video, empire waist dresses look very flattering on short girls, but often it's the length of the dress that makes it look good or bad, not the style. If you want your legs to look longer and make yourself seem taller, you either need to show a lot of leg or none of it. As for tall girls, I would assume it would be the opposite, but I can't tell you since I'm tiny

I'm an hourglass shape that holds my weight in my love handles, so I feel the mermaid shape doesn't work for me cos it shows my wobbly bits. It also poses a problem with jeans because my hips are a bit smaller than my love handles. I opt for higher waist bottoms so they don't drift down, and it streamlines the area. I also do separate pieces- tops that sinch in at the natural waist and bottoms that droop down from there. my main problem shopping from dressed is that the waistline is too high- once the fabric gets over my boobs what would fit a smaller frame at the natural waist looks like an umpire waist on me (and I don't think that flatters my shape at all).

Hi, just found this channel, and I'm really enjoying it! I am enjoying my 50-year-old hourglass body. My wardrobe/style challenge is that I dress modestly, meaning, skirts below the knee, shirts with sleeves that are elbow length or longer, and not too tight. The shirts are too long/too bulky, or unflattering ("relaxed fit"). Suggestions welcome.

I've been on a high waisted pant buying spree (before they're gone, and everything is hip hugging again), paired with: a slightly oversized cropped sweater (I'm short) or a boxy shirt tucked in so waist is accentuated without hugging every curve or a fitted top with a tailored blazer that skims curves or a peplum top. I think these looks flatter without looking painted on.

NO. If you have an hourglass Calvin Klein has always (Since the 90's at least!) had a small waist and larger hips...I cannot fit in any other brand otherwise the large waist makes them slide off! NEVER Levi's...legs are too thin and waist too wide. She is right about a tailor, I made my own clothes and wore fitted straight skirts with the perfect waist to hip ratio! If you want to hide your waist/take a break, do not wear the frumpy suggestions!! They make everyone look horrible!! Take a long cardigan/ shirt (mid hip length is perfect) with your normal clothes, it elongates the lines from shoulder to hip and camouflages the waist without making you look like a skyscraper.

I have what I would call a "small hourglass", I look nothing like Salma Hayek, my size is around s, breasts are not even full B cup, height is 172 cm but the shape itself is definitely hourglass, from shoulders to waist a visible triangle (it's more about the chest shape itself, not breasts, especially if you look from behind) and from there to hips another triangle. Hips are probably a little wider than the top. I have the same problems with finding things that would fit hips bit not be loose on the waist. The only pace that felt like paradise was Brazil, there I could find jeans for my body type easily. But the fact that my general size is small I think actually helps sometimes. I can wear bold top cuts without looking too sexy because of humble breast size. I I also like the combination of crop tops with high waisted skirts or pants and again it looks quite subtle. If I want to hide the hourglass aspect wearing a loose blouse will do the job easily, I'll just look like a narrow rectangle.

I have the same bodytype! It's quite handy, but of course the fit of clothes (just today I saw pants of which the hip measurement would be a little tight, but the waist is WAY too big...88-60...) is very annoying. People also think that because I'm skinny, I look good in everything. But no. I want to show the shape I have, and wearing 'rectangly', loose stuff makes that shape disappear and makes me drown in my clothes because I have so much fabric around me. I like wearign tight stuff (or semi-tight with a high waist) much more. No matter what, I have to emphasize my tiny 60 cm/ 23 inch waist.

@@somyaaaaaa hourglass is about shoulders being roughly the same width as hips, the bust doesn't necessarily have to be same width as hips. Pear shaped women have more narrow shoulders and wide hips. Hourglass is also about the waist hip-ratio...there is marked difference, often 8-10 inches between the hips and waist

Thanks for posting this video! I really appreciate your recognizing that sometimes hourglass gals need a break from being so sexual; it's unfortunate but even in overalls people tend to judge people's sexualness based on their figure, no matter what they wear. I tend to wear high waisted skirts, jeans and leggings, and body con stuff but when I need a break from all that I put on a loose but long-ish cardigan over my tank top and skinny jeans to streamline my figure and make the focus not on my curves

We petite women need a little help. I think I'm an hourglass, but I have a small bust. I definitely have a well defined waist. I notice when I go to the gym and am in gym clothes that I'm an hourglass, but my cup size is small. I guess in generally, we just need more about the small, I mean really small build. I'm an Ann Taylor size 00.

What about your hips? You may be more of a pear. My cup size isn't large but the overall effect with my matching hips and waist is hour glass. People always assume my breast size is larger than it actually is.

What would you recommend for a bottom-heavy hourglass? For me, it’s my wide shoulders and hips that are balanced while my bust (and slim band) is smaller than both. However, my waist is still noticeably smaller than my bust and very well-defined. I know wearing a push-up bra under the outfits you recommend would work but I don’t want to have to wear a push-up bra ALL THE TIME! But textured shirts that are supposed make your bust look bigger, also make my shoulders look bigger and thus, out of balance with my hips. Any suggestions on dressing for a bottom-heavy hourglass would be greatly appreciated!

Same here! Biggish hips, wide shoulders, small waist and a chest that's slightly smaller than my hips. I'm not even sure whether I'm a pear shape or a less curved hourglass to be honest and since I dont have a tape measure I can't figure it out from the videos!

as an hourglass shape I've literally never felt the need to hide my waist to take a break from my body type as hiding my waist makes me look very heavy. Instead I look for tops that are longer that hide my rear a little and tops that have less cleavage so I still have the over all hourglass shape and I don't look heavy but I don't look like a femme fatale waiting to explain to the cops that I don't know where my rich husband went.

My problem is that I feel fat when I don't wear something that accentuates my figure (which means my boobs will be showing or at least the clothes will be tight) but if I wear something like that I feel slutty. Since I'm 17, it's impossible to find a suitable dress (for example when i'm going out on a fancy family dinner) for my age especially when it comes to fast fashion since dresses that don't accentuate my figure makes me hella fat and the rest makes me look slutty.

try wearing one loose item (bottom or top, choose one) and making sure to highlight the waist. I find that this masks some curves, while not making me look fat/pregnant. Also loose open jackets over tighter shirts work well.

You can wear an oversized long t-shirt or dress with leggings and a wide belt to accentuate your waist. Nice shoes and a handbag work well for fancy nights out. Wear the same clothes with converse shoes and you have an easy everyday look

Why are people afraid to say 'hour glass body type is the perfect one'? It is the perfect one as it has balanced top and bottom, same like having an oval face. There is no shame in perfection. I am sick of hearing how imperfections are paraded as something to be proud of, especially when bad character and attitude becomes the norm. I am not glorifying the past but people in those days cared more to look good and treat others with more respect, even if through the clutched teeth.

maybe it's the perfect one in your opinion but taste is different and subjective. I even think it is rude of you to say that the other bodytypes are 'imperfect' and so of less quality than an hourglass. Everyone is beautiful. And everyone sees beauty in different things. To say that people in the past cared more to look good is just not true. Look at our society right now. Everyone is obsessed with looks because of statements like yours. I would love a less self-centerd world so please stop saying these things that can make others insecure.

Isabella Sullivan dear, regardless of what we want, science proved we are attracted to symmetry and balance. If facts are rude to you, when you have an issue with reality. Everyone is beautiful in their own way, yes, but there is the most balanced and the most symmetrical figure and face shape that have always been seen as most attractive, regardless of trends. And trends are temporary. Every make up artist and every clothing stylist will advice you to look the most balanced and symmetrical unless you are opting for special look and appearance. And it is fine if it makes you feel happy. Listen, I have neither perfect face shape nor perfect figure and I do not obsess myself with my appearance. On the contrary, it made me concentrate on my education and hobbies. I also can rock very feminine and beautiful look, if I choose to because I know my shortcomings and I know my advantages. The problem with Western culture is we are obsessed with the outside and forgot spirituality. We prefer to bullshit ourselves that we are perfect rather than either fix it through diet and healthy eating or fixing our characters by becoming better human beings. But no problem will be fixed if we refuse to admit it exists.

We are talking about body shapes. Body shapes are something you are born with. No diet would help a pear shape with large hipbones becomming an hourglass, dear. Or an Apple shape will not suddenly get smaller boobs. I'm all for a healthy lifestyle. And about the symmetry thing: I am a fashion student and we learn that symmetry is boring. Maybe in your opinion it's perfect but it's extreamly boring and that makes it not perfect in my opinion. Look at some of the considered most beautiful dresses there are. Like the Cinderella dress. She has a very large Bottom and a tiny top. Not very balanced at all. Our characters have nothing to to in this discussion. You can love and accept yourself and also be very kind and loving towards others. I don't see why that would contradict itself. And that it's always considered the most attractive is just bullshit. I wrote my research paper about beauty and beauty ideals from the middle ages to the Baroque ages and you should research what the ideal was for example in the renaissance. You are spreading negativity with those statements and I hope you see why.

I also find that languid asymmetry tends to work well. Draping from the shoulder to the waist or from the waist to the knee or lower. Great tip about creating the horizontals at the wide parts and verticals in the center!

love your channel, and love the mention of dita in this video! I dress in a style similar to her but i find myself between the fitted dress and a fit and flair dress most often. The only time i give my waist a break is in a babydoll dress that isn't structured and has a contrasting print and minimizer bra. That way the bust doesn't make the babydoll ride up as much lol. Also, high waisted and cropped top everything!

Thank you, Justine. I am a slender hour glass (US size 2). For a while, I really wanted to wear some of the trendier styles which, in my opinion are not designed for the hour glass, thinking I could get away with it. What I found is that these styles tend to visually put a lot of weight on me. So I've reverted back to cinching my waist or struggling with finding clothes that I don't need to have altered. One of my all time favorites for me: skirts or jeans with a yoke. So flattering on me! I wish these would come back!!!! Perhaps you can design some!!
