Gday Mate Awesome Advice ! Unfortunately you had to learn it the hard way, but you are definitely on the right path now. I'm like you a bit of a quiet withdrawn person who doesn't really fit in with a crowd. Luckily I was able to work for myself as an electrical contractor for the last 30 years mostly underground in a mine. I've now retired from that and bought a KW a few years ago and am currently finishing of a major refurb of a low loader and plan to work my way around Australia doing oversize loads and just enjoying myself for a few years before my body tells me I have to stop. Take Care Mate

That sounds awesome. It's nice to be able to do what you enjoy and get paid for it. I love it. I do oversized loads from time to time. It's a challenge here making sure the permits are correct for each state. Every state has different regulations too for oversized loads.

@@aftersolo we do not know one another. We’ve only conversed here on KZfaq. It’s funny, I had watched your videos for quite some time before you made the one video that talked about you leaving the company. The sort of poetic one. There were enough clues in there that I figured out that we worked for the same outfit. I’m not out of OKC and I am not P and D. I run Linehaul based just a couple of hours east of there. But, I have met that manager a few times when I was over there swapping trailers or getting fuel. I used to run my own truck the way you do now. In fact, I’d always ran my own truck before taking this job. Bought my first one to haul cattle when I was 18 in ‘94. I took this job because my wife was injured several years ago. I needed to be home every day, reliably. That meant at home, taking care of her. Not wrenching on a truck or trailer. Not doing paperwork. Not spending all day on the phone taking care of business. I needed to focus on her. She came off a horse and broke her back. This gig worked out great because I could put her in bed and then go to work. Home every morning to see after her. When she was all healed up and ready to return to normal, I was in the process of getting my ducks in a row to go back to my own truck. That is when the pandemic hit. I decided I should probably wait for a while before I went back to my truck. I started to do it again when the rates skyrocketed last year. Before I got it all completed and put in my notice, everything tanked so, I’m waiting again. I never did sell my truck and I had always planned to go back to it. I’m just hanging out waiting on things to get a little better. I have not had the experience that you had. They pretty much leave us alone on the L/H side. as a matter of fact, last night when I started, my lead trailer was way overweight on the drives. A simple phone call to tell them that I am not taking it and they just put me on another one. No questions asked. But, that is dealing with a Regional or corporate dispatcher. I really rarely ever deal with local management on dispatch issues. I have to say while it is boring, the money is good and it is easy. Without question the easiest cleanest thing I’ve ever done with a truck. I still miss my old truck, though, and one day I will get back in it. Until then, I just live vicariously through truckers on KZfaq lol.

@truckpilotnate2972 Sorry to hear about your wife and all your struggles. Glad she recovered. The reason I never did l/h was that I didn't want to work at night and it was very monotonous. The money was way better though. P&D was micromanaged so hard bc we were the face of the company. I envied the linehaul guys oftentimes. I had to keep pretty clean cut and they could just grow their hair out and leave their shirts untucked. Went most the day without seeing a single person either. Was definitely more my style. It wasn't until 6.5 years in that I had enough and called Roy and quit and he sweet talked me into staying. Things were way different after that bc I made some demands during that conversation. I secretly bought the truck and trailer during that time and got my own authority then left. I had freed myself up financially to where I could do that. Anyway, I wish I would of established all those boundaries from the beginning then things would of been way different. That's all in the past now. I just try to help people through those times with the videos. I hope things get better with the economy too. Four more years of any democrat will be devastating. A lot of guys have went out of business since covid, although 2021 was a fantastic year. 2020, 2022, and especially 2023 were really bad years. I try to live as frugal as possible bc I could be next if I don't watch it.

@@aftersolo yep. Most days, i wear jeans and a plain pocket T-shirt. Lol. I actually like working nights. Running for myself I tried to drive nights as often as I could. It wasn’t too hard to do it hauling cows or hoppers. Anything else, though, was harder it seemed like. I really want a step deck or a flatbed. I’ve always enjoyed that kind of work, but have very little experience in it. I had a reefer for a very short while. I hated every second of that. I did some pad wrap stuff with a dry van. I enjoyed it, but it’s not as easy to come by on your own authority. Right now I’m trying to decide if I want a step or a flat. I’m pretty sure it’ll be one of the two. I can still pull the hopper when ever I need to. I don’t have a cattle trailer anymore, though. I sold it when prices were through the roof.

@truckpilotnate2972 I did reefer for 7 months and it was miserable. I spent most of my time waiting around for an empty trailer or for my trailer to get unloaded. I had zero experience with flatbed starting out but I had a good friend who I used to work with who helped me out. If I ever buy another trailer, it will definitely be a 53' flatbed. If I didn't do pipe so often, it would definitely be a 53' stepdeck with ramps. I've had to pass up a lot of good paying loads that required ramps. Pipe is just a pain to haul with stepdecks. They are definitely more versatile though.
