People don't realize that homesteading in the past, was a full time job for them. They sold their crops (big fields of crops) , their eggs, their meat animals, etc., for things they couldn't trade for. Today most homesteading is for family, friends & next door neighbors sharing or smaller production. You have more time you want to commit to your homestead life. You do the work needed instead of coming home , laying around, watching tv, etc. Plus, as you said, you raise what you enjoy working with. It's still hard work but it's work you enjoy. As you've said before. It's being outdoors, it's a healthier life, healthier food for your family. I also believe it's healthier for you & your families soul, to have that connection with the earth & your animals.

AL, you have done well with your planning. You are fairly self sufficient and are not trying to do everything for you table. Planning and good management on your part have proven very fruitful. You seem to think in practical terms. You keep the end goal in mind. You seem to enjoy the food you grow. Thanks for sharing your great ideas. By the way, you are over 22k now. Great work! From the videos that I watch, both yours and other KZfaqrs, animals seem to be able to know just the right time to make noise, but like you said it wouldn’t be authentic if it weren’t for them. One channel I watch, did a live video that didn’t have the KZfaqr in front of the camera for the majority of the video. He put his tablet in the chicken run and we just watched the chickens. I found it very relaxing. They were actually very quiet and their clucking was very subdued. It was nice.

That tumbler is a really great idea. I'll have to look that up. I don't like hand-sifting my compost, especially in the oppressive Oklahoma heat in the summer!

My dad managed to raise cattle & horses while working fulltime at Bobcat making skid steer loaders. The animals pretty much took care of themselves if provided the means to. They had a watering hole to drink from & we put out hay for them at least once a week when they weren't on pasture.

With a new homestead, the biggest thing is infrastructure. It is a major expense and takes a lot of time to build. After that the homestead is mostly maintenance. Really hard to make a living with just the homestead because of things like medical insurance and retirement planning. It can be done, but it's a lot of commitment and work. Today it's almost impossible to not have two incomes to succeed. Come on Spring

Great video. You are moving forward and taking care of your family in a healthy/wholesome/responsible way. These days Homestead and Farmstead seem to be used interchangeably and why not? We are not 100% sustainable on our 350 acres, but we are right up there in taking care of our needs by our own hand. If the grid goes down, we can switch over easily. Eventually you will have your venture taking care of you and your family in a big way. I call that a LIFESTYLE choice in learning to be independent. Hopefully someday you will be able to work toward being OK if you lost your job or chose to keep yourself going on your 20 acres. We are almost at that point... P.S. I miss raising California rabbits and may do that again.

I totally agree about rabbit poo! I enjoy the meat (especially for KungPao Rabbit--my family's favorite way to enjoy rabbit meat), but I LOVE the fertilizer!!

Totally agree with doing only what you know you'll want to do on your homestead. We want big garden so shopping trips (cause everything is far in the desert), our own milk (cause lactose free milk is $$$) and our own meat (bacon, lamb & chicken).

if you have compost worms in your "house plants" you dont need to fertilise and re-pot them as often and if some "escape" they just dehydrate themselves so you can pick them up and feed them to your birds

Awesome! You have the same style auto chicken feeder & waterer as I do. Both have worked out great for the last 3 years. This time of year we use a heated 1/2 gallon dog bowl for the waterer, changing it out daily. Hopefully it will start warming up soon & we can switch back to the horizontal nipple bucket soon...its nice to fill it up and leave it alone for few days We are hoping to start doing video's soon...all we have is our iPhones for right now, which will have to work until finances allow us to get a camera Take care~ Shaun & Sarah

My thoughts are, it just comes down to doing the work. A garden is work, animals are work, processing them is work, processing veggies for storage is work. Its all what you want to put into it. If there is a timesaver that's great. You can spend your time watching TV or you can spend your time growing foods and livestock. Its all a choice you have to make.

I have a full time job and cows,chickens ,gardens hour or so a day goes to the cows.Plus do a lot of mechanic work! How do you do it? You get up in the morning and get at it!There's no way I would have animals if I lived on a couch!

Great content Al, I get it systems built around duration and time management. The question I always find myself asking Al is you must have a very disciplined personal routine in order to juggle the job, the channel, and the homestead not to mention a father and husband. The whole thing just seems very impressive!

Yes I am pretty good at sticking to the routine. Lol. My hope is to turn this into my and Ginas fulltime jobs. Its a lot of early mornings and late nights for now. But it is worth it and I really enjoy all aspects of it

I am not shure who said it but Someone said bedire you home staid start getting s3d to certain aspects. Like up earlier and earlier to mimic the time you would get out if of bed before work to check on your animals to start a garden where ever you are in buckets in patios grow as much as you can and tend to the plants and learn to grow. Make compost. Vermicompost can be done in an tiny apartment with amazing user free towers. Recycle and upcycle everything you have before you trow it away... lear hot to cook and make hime made medicine like tinctures soap Shampoo etc etc. Help your friends move and build things get acquainted with tools and building projects. And read. Read as much as you can. Not just videos in KZfaq but get books on the topics you want to learn. And save every penny you have stop spending and take your budget back to the are bones of what your basic needs are cancel payed tv extra magazines or subscriptions etc etc. And I rember who said it art from art and bri. Man he's a smart fellow. So that's my advise to anyone who what's to start homesteading....You can and you can start now. There are lots of things you can do in a small suburban home or city apartment to get used to a self sufficient lifestyle. Good luck kind regards rose

We are also between rabbits right now. When my kids were small and we lived in town rabbits were the meat of choice for our homestead. I originally got out of rabbits, because I had a ready source in a friend of ours who raised rabbits for show and meat. She kept us in rabbit meat for what it cost me, so I just saved myself another project. Someday rabbits will be back. I think it is an important side note... even if it did get you a bit off track... to note that a homestead is in a constant state of growth and flex. Staying aware of your wants and needs and not getting over taxed makes it work better all around for everyone!

Great video. Do you think you will built a barn one day. I know you have just built your outdoor kitchen and may not feel like another big project so soon. Building a barn would make a great video project plus you will be able to keep rabbits again and they produce great meat.

#1 key to success as a REAL homesteader is to get a hot tub... No matter how bad or sick we feel we must get out there to feed the animals. IF we are so bad off there's no way then the process needs to be easy enough that even Olivia, or a non-animal owning friend/neighbor, can get in there and get them done. As for rabbits, couldn't you put a few cages of breeding stock in your basement during the coldest of winter? Or figure a way to have them in the greenhouse like you did with the piggies?

We bring our rabbits inside for the winter......not sure if that helps youhave a cage i made that sits on a rubbermade tote that we sprinkle sawdust/shavings in now and then that kills the smell. They live a good life and provide plenty of little round brown gold

I can echo your comments about eating out and feeling like garbage after....because you just filled your stomach with garbage....GMO...soy....I hate to eat out for just those reasons. Growing your own is the best way because you are getting good stuff....right now, much of what we eat we have to buy and organic, ain't cheap!! But it's better for you and the more you do it...the longer you do it....you notice the difference and before long, you can not imagine eating any other way...regardless of the cost. Now....if I could JUST win powerball!! Just ONCE!! I'm not greedy!! 300 million one time....I promise to not buy another ticket and risk taking away someone elses chance to win! PROMISE!! ;>) Awesome video Al....as usual...hope you never get tired of inspiring us...cause we need it!! lol!

so.. do you have problems with wild life any bears in area. I'm thinking of using pigs to clear out brush and not sure what type of electric fencing to use I'm leaning toward a chicken type peg up fence system and yes we do have a bear in area that visits us about twice a week. no damage just looking area.

I was under the impression that rabbits breed rather quickly. But not quickly enough to have rabbits only when it's warm enough? Or is it hard to get adult rabbits to start up each spring? Not possible maybe, and you don't want to keep a breeding pair during the winter?

Yes rabbits breed very easily and quickly. It is a lot of work to keep rabbits through the winter here.

ceselb We have 10 rabbits here in the homestead. 2 bucks, 2 does and a litter of 6 babies. We have 2 new litters due here on the 22nd/23rd of March. So they do breed quick. 30ish days from the time of breeding to babies. Depending on the breed it's usually 8-12 weeks to the freezer. Rabbits do well here in the winter.

Yes, I understand that it's not an option during the winter. But why can't you have some from spring to fall?

ceselb We breed through the winter here because the rabbits do better in the cold than the heat. The litters that are due here next month will be the last of the year until the fall when we start to re-breed them. You can breed rabbits and keep them through the warmer weather for the manure. It is a lot of work changing out water bottles in the winter when they freeze in minutes but to us it is worth it.
