From the perspective of an Australian I laugh at your assertion that five hours is long haul 😄 Its nine hours from the east coast of Australia to Singapore, about the same to Hawaii, and nearly 24 hours to London

Timsshifter is a great app to use to help prepare for time changes. I used to never be able to sleep on long haul flights. It starts shifting your time around 3 days prior to your flight. I am now able to sleep on the flight and feel much less jet lag. It’s definitely worth trying

For the aisle seat folks - if the plane is a 3 - 4 - 3 seat configuration choose the aisle seats in the middle row that has four seats. That way most likely only one person will have to climb over you to go to the bathroom. With the 3 seat row on the sides there will be 2 people that need to disturb you or twice as often . Window seats allow you to rest your head on the wall. As far as choosing a window seat for the view, the view looks the same with mostly clouds for about 90 % of the trip. At night, there is almost nothing to look at except for the short departure and landing phase of the trip.

YVR to LHR in October. 9-10 hours. As a senior, having special assistance at airports is the key to my survival. Some seniors seem to think you have to be 'disabled' to request assistance. Not true. If you cannot handle standing in line-ups, climbing stairs, or walking long distances within/between terminals, then you should get help. It can make all the difference to your trip.

Everyone sharing itineraries so… here’s mine. Getting ready for another 25 hours in the aluminum tube - starting in Boston heading to Tokyo - that section is almost 14 hours duration - leaving just after noon from Logan in Boston and flying northwest over Canada heading toward Alaska, over the Bearing Sea, then south along Kamchatka Peninsula approaching Japan from the north, so flying over Hokkaido, and finally a slight right turn down into Narita - then… change planes in Narita for another flight of 10+ more hours, continuing south across the South China Sea (lots of turbulence in that part - bumpy bumpy) past the Philippines and over the Java Sea and finally down into CGK (Soekarno-Hatta) (SHIA) airport in Jakarta on the northwest side of the Island of Java… arriving around 1am the following day and finally out into the balmy tropical night. The journey crosses twelve time zones and the International Date Line. I don’t bother to reset my watch to sync with the time of my destination bcoz it’s the same hour just twelve hours ‘in the future’ so to speak. My airline of choice for the trip is JAL. They have a gigantic selection of menu options catering to all sorts of international diets from American, Japanese, Vegan, Hindu vegetarian, Jain vegetarian, Moslem, Halal, Kosher, Diabetic, Gluten intolerant… special meals for ppl with allergies, for passengers with religious dietary restrictions, several kids meals… it’s amazing the amount of thought that went into their numerous menu choices. I’m curious about the planning of the schedule - they serve the passengers a meal about an hour after takeoff and when everyone has eaten and the cleanup has finished they dim the lights and tint the windows creating an artificial twilight (tho it’s actually late afternoon) and many passengers try to settle in for some sleep. Fourteen hours. 14. For me… somewhere around eight to nine hours into the flight I find myself getting impatient still knowing we have six more hours til Narita, followed by a short walk thru the terminal to an identical plane for…. OMG… ten plus hours more heading toward Jakarta. It usually takes me at least two or three days to flip my schedule to get used to being exactly twelve hours out of sync with my life ‘on the other side’ since the two locations are on opposite sides of the world. What tips do I have? Can’t say bcoz everyone is different. I like to find something to read that will keep me interested and turning pages as much as possible… so that’s when I put aside the science and literature I normally read and try to find a thick novel. Your mileage may vary… Bon Voyage.

I really like the noise canceling headphones ! Make sure they are called noise cancelling & not noise reducing. The noise reducing style only reduce the noise with the headphone cushions . The price will reflect the difference. I also tried noise canceling ear buds that were very expensive. They didn't work that well and were uncomfortable. Go for the full size noise canceling head phone with lots of padding. One can wear them with no audio coming through and have dead silence. I use them on the trains to block out the rude people who run their mouth the whole trip and have regards for people around them.

Next long haul flight is SF to Manila (15+ hours, non-stop). Booked a seat in the first row of economy (just behind premium economy) facing the bulkhead and next to the emergency exit....3-feet of leg room and its positioned right over the wings which fulcrum point of the planes' rotating axis (most stable, least movement). You mentioned many good ideas, I'm going to try compression socks and a 1-liter bottle of water! Safe travels everyone 😊

Just came back from Morocco, and the longest leg, 10 hours, was Madrid to Dallas. Watching 5 movies with my Apple headphones kept me sane, because they cancel more outside noise than the airline provides headphones. I survived, but now I wanna do a 13+ to get to Asia, and just the thought makes me wanna cry. Another tip was we stayed the night in a Spain airport terminal hotel, to break up the continuous flights, that way our longest leg was the first one of the day.

Lol I've been flying such cheapo airlines recently that they don't serve food (even for 8+ hours) unless you pay!! My favorite strat has been to remove the emergency booklet and any brochures from the seat back pocket immediately when getting on a plane and tucking them out of the way (usually between seat legs on the floor keeps them stable). Then, I put all of my in-flight essentials in the pocket. This makes it feel much more like my own space and less cluttered. I heard of a lady recently who brought an orange with her and used the peels as a natural scent diffuser!

I have to go pee often so I always try to get an aisle seat towards the back of the plane. Flying from the US to Japan or Incheon Korea usually takes 14 to 16 hours so I’m either sleeping or watching all of the movies. The very first time I flew internationally, I was given a middle seat in the center row. That was a terrible time because the people to my left and right both took sleeping pills and I could not wake them to go use the restroom. I normally wear a polo shirt, cargo pants and wear light jacket because it gets cold even with the blanket they give you; if I get cold I either zip it up or flip it around and use it as another blanket.

Ditto. Only book aisle seats for flights. Flying to Vietnam in two months. Flight from Toronto to Seoul and then Seoul to DaNang. With layover, that's almost 24 hrs. Quick walks during the flight helps my blood flow and enjoy extra snacks usually kept at the back of the plane.

It's pretty much impossible to try and fall asleep until they serve the main meal and turn down the lights. That's the only time it's going to be somewhat quiet. For me, that's usually 2-3 hours into the flight. Then I get about 3 hours of quiet before the lights come back on, serve a snack and they prepare the cabin for landing. That's typical in my experience, going from the east coast USA to Paris. Air travel pretty much is the worst, with everything involved.

My main concern is, I'll be in Poland for 9 hours (possibly not as long, I have NEVER been on a flight from London Heathrow that left on time). With 9 hours, I wanna leave the airport (if nothing else, it's a chance to walk before my long flight). I'm just not sure when to be back. I am hoping 4 hours would be enough, I don't have to checkin or anything but obviously I need security and whatever

I'm going to Paris, France in August. I actually have one layover in Montreal because it's Air Canada I like Layovers because usually by the second half of the trip I'm get my anxious also I tend to bloat really badly on a plane. So i have to pack like antihistamine that kind of makes me go to sleep on top my food allergy to olives, the alternative would be lemon balm because it doesn't make me feel drowsy, ashwagandha for stress and my bloat, maxi strength gas medicine and fiber pills. It's good to bring some sugar free hard candy.

Here is something different bring your own cloth dinner napkins , drape them over the airplane seat back table..create a picnic type atmosphere by bringing a very nice meal or cheese tray crackers in a small container..get some cheap plastic wine glasses (allowed by TSA)even if your not drinking wine served on the LH flights it makes any beverage look better than the plastic cups the airlines hand out .get some nice take away utensils from one of the many restaurants or airport lounges after clearing TSA.bring an orange, the aroma from the orange once your either slice or peel it adds such a fresh scent around the area your sitting in. Traveling alone or with someone makes this fun. Pull put your laptop ,tablet or pad/ pen. Write your autobiography or think tank some ideas.. it's stated that flying creates an amazing ability to think because of the altitude.

Going on my honeymoon this April, going from JFK to Dubai connecting to Maldives then connecting by seaplane to the island, total flight time is estimated at around 19-20 hrs. 12.5 to Dubai, 6.5 to maldives and then 45 min to maldives. I'm very nervous as I've never flown more than 3-5 hrs and even those flights fell endless, I have a hard time sleeping on flights

I book middle seats. All the time. I optimize for front of plane. So whatever seat is closest to the front, I’ll take it.

Thanks .. all pretty good stuff. Snacks, ... always ... just remember that most can't be brought into another country. Jerky, nuts, fruits, trail mix, dried fruits. Just save the hassle and eat it all or leave it on the plane when arrivals. No matter what you think is allowed, the immigration person will have the last word. Safe Travels all ... Off to Chile Sunday.

I don’t mind a middle seat. I am 5’ tall and have worked very hard to become healthy and in a right sized body. So I fit perfectly in an airplane seat 😂. And I like only having to bother one person when I have to use the restroom. When I was younger, I absolutely loved having the window seat but I rarely had to get up and use the restroom. I’m flying to Barcelona in four days. I think I’ll try the time shifter app as I’ve never heard of that before. Thanks for all your tips. I appreciate them them.

International flights, you can ask for more food if your meal don't fill you. There is usually extra and they just throw it away after they land.

Good thought. I learned early on to take what’s offered to you any time it’s offered especially snacks because you can save them for later and not have to have the flight attendant make an extra trip.

These are really great ideas for a frequent international traveler like me. However I have had to learn all these ideas the hard way. I wish I had found this channel years ago. One problem I had with American Airlines was sitting in an aisle seat next to a very obese guy in the middle seat who easily weighed more than 350 lbs. His butt was so wide that 1/4 of my seat was not available to me because his butt was on it. Same with the window passenger lady. This guy was so fat that both of his arm rests had to be in the up position. He also had horrible body odor and sweating profusely during the whole flight from PHX to LAX. I was very miserable and I complained to a flight attendant. She politely explained that American Airlines are required to sell a single seat to an obese person. I can understand accommodating a very fat person but myself and the lady in the window seat were the passengers having to accommodate that fat guy. I had a 5-hour layover before my connecting flight to Tokyo. I could not find a place to shower after sitting next to the profusely sweating fat guy for 3 + hours. (Including time sitting on the tarmac) His sweat and stink was all over me and I stunk as bad as him by the time we landed in LAX I finally had to find a layover hotel to shower and change clothes. The clothes I was wearing I had to throw away because of the horrendous odor. My question is why are severely overweight passengers allowed to buy one seat? If fat people need more room, the airlines, not other passengers should have to accommodate their large bulk.

Unfortunately a male in his sixties requires frequent bathroom breaks which absolutely mandates an aisle seat. However, was that not the case I would have parked myself in the middle of the middle seats where I shall establish my own kingdom isolated behind noise-cancelling headphones and a sleep mask without any intrusion for the duration of the flight. I am a firm believer in having an entire series available to view on a long-haul flight.

You can bring your own empty water bottle. It cannot contain any liquid in it when passing through security. You can refill it once you pass security.
