I agree! Went on a trip to Hawaii once and got my wake up call how waves work. Water left the beach and was standing there wondering where the water went, turned around only to be met by a huge wave and only had less then a second to make a decision. Scariest moment of my life

Yeah, I grew up in Hawaii. They teach you in school first, never turn your back to the ocean. That's because, second, if the water starts to pull back farther than low tide, run to the highest point and start climbing trees if possible. Side note: the elementary school I went to was originally destroyed by a tsunami. Apparently quite a few students saw the water pull back, revealing fish flopping around, so they ran out to grab some fish to bring home, and that's when the wave swept through.

The thing that he failed to mention is that even before the water level starts rising, it will recede first which is why so many people don't survive tsunamis. They think that since the water is so far back It would be a good idea to go collect things from the sea bed, but at that point you should start making your escape. One of the earliest signs of a tsunami is water levels retreating. Because the wave itself is taking that water. Edit: i posted this based on what I remember and thought no one would see this. I was wrong.

Actually if I remember correctly from my oceanography class, a tsunami can cause water to retreat or water to rise, like a extreme high tide. It depends where you are I believe. The trough can arrive first, making it appear like the water is being taken for the wave then the crest or the crest can arrive, producing the rush of water. A tsunami is not actually a giant wave but more like a rapid high tide, I think. And often it comes in a series of waves, where the later ones are actually worse.

wrong! sea levels are variable before a tsunami, but most people are only familiar with the recession of the tide. a markedly increased rise in sea level is just as indicative for a tsunami. im a meteorologist :)

Generally tsunamis never cause that sort of slow rise before the wave. More often it recedes a bunch before the giant wave comes in. Also, depending on the size of the tsunami getting on a large skyscraper might be a bad idea if it can’t withstand the impact, and yes water can deliver enough force to knock down a building. Ideally there is a hill you can climb on that gets you high enough, since that obviously isn’t moving anywhere. But realistically the best strategy is just listen to tsunami warnings and get out before the disaster even arrives.

One thing most people don't know is that a tsunami is not 1 wave. It's usually over 10, the 2-3rd waves are always the most powerful. Meaning that usually after the first wave people retreat not knowing theres more waves.

To those who now have a fear of tsunamis from this video: know that most tsunamis are less than 10 feet high, and their speed traveling onto land is about 30 mph. So you’ll have plenty of time to escape, assuming you have a tsunami alarms and you notice the water retreating. Edit: Most of y’all seem to ignore the fact that I said “MOST tsunamis are 10ft and 30mph” geez.

thats half true. When the tsunami is formed by crustal movement, one side rises and the other side sinks. the sinked side will be the side that recedes. the side that rose just comes as a tsunami without receding
