I'm in my 40s and have trouble with shoulder stiffness and pain, so have been struggling with backstroke since I got back into swimming recently! It used to be one of my favorite strokes in my 20s. I still love kicking on my back though, it's so relaxing sometimes I feel at risk of falling asleep lol 😂

It took me tons of laps, and I used to fell like I was drowning. But when I finally got down body/hip rotation everything changed. I love back now. It has also made my workouts so much more fun now that I can do FRIM. Now I've got to try the cup.

I have got a lot better at front crawl and breast stroke watching your videos - thanks so much for making them, but I have not got up to the same speed at back stroke yet. I've got the rotation and eyes to the ceiling going on, but not sure I've figured out the optimum arm pull yet. I watched your video in slow mo to try and see when you do the EVF but it's quite hard to see. This was a lot clearer to me in your front crawl videos.

Thanks for the feedback! A great drill to work on the backstroke pull is actually to pull on the lane line when you swim. Keep your elbow engaged to get that catch, and practice on both sides.

Maybe what happens is that you scull downward instead of outward with your arm. You should scull outward. Notice that in the video, when you watch them from above it looks like they are doing little angel wings.

Most teachers tell you to rotate your shoulders but don't say anything about the hips. I even had a teacher tell me to _not_ move my hips. Rotating your shoulders without rotating your hips is almost impossible. It'd be less confusing if teachers told their students to rotate the whole torso - then it'd be quite clear that you have to move both shoulders _and_ hips. They also tell you to pull one shoulder out of the water when they should be telling you to sink the other one instead. I got so much better at rotating my shoulders when I focused more on the latter instead of the former.

Hi Erin! If you’re indoors, hopefully the ceiling has lines you can follow. If not, or you’re outdoors, you’ll want to use your peripheral vision to eye the lane lines. Add practicing double-arm backstroke to work on an even pull and that should help!

My question is on back stroke kick. In theory it appears to me that the kick should be asymmetric, i.e. if i am kicking forwards ( like when I am going to kick a ball) that part of the cycle should be such that my feet is straight (ballerina type,) and when I go the other way then perhaps my feet should be at 90 degrees or so from my leg, that way as I pressing less (area of pressure) contrary to my motion the propulsion. Also a bend of the knees should help some (not too much bend , straight legs may not be the best way to kick), the pivot points of the rotation dictates this bend. Last but no least, the kicking on free stroke also should be asymmetric and perhaps pars of the kick should be above surface of the water for best propulsion forwards. I am a physicist not a swimmer. Your comments. I do understand the benefits of the kick to swim high in the water etc., But I am not addressing those important advantages in my comment.

I'm honestly a bit frustrated that this video doesn't explain how I will figure out when I've reached the side of the swimming pool as I can't see it. I'm afraid that if I continue I will bump my head so either I end up stopping a few meters before I've reached the side or swimming/floating a few meters with my arm stretched out, obviously making it all much less effective

Hi there! This is what backstroke flags are for. You'll want to figure out your stroke count - counting how many strokes you take from the flags to the wall. Check out this video for more information: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bt6fqsuamJeypqs.html

In all olympic style pools that I have swum in there is a line of flags from the ceiling a few feet before you reach the wall. When you're looking up and see that line of flags you will know you are approaching the end of the lane. Then, you can count the number of strokes to get to that position and use the stroke count as well.

While some water may still get in your face, this is our best advice: Make sure that you're finishing your stroke by pushing the water to your feet! As soon as your hand finishes the pull and begins to recover, start turning your hand so that your pinky will enter the water at the top of the stroke. Keep your entry wide above your shoulders!
