Thank You for the information! I've been noticing "swing weight" on club spec. sheets for years, but never gave it much thought. From age 9-22, I played and practiced seriously every day, year round. Then I just stopped. After a 15 year hiatus from playing, I'm getting back into it. I can't believe how much the technology has changed. So I'm in the process of choosing my equipment and I want the best performing clubs I can get, and I've been told by many to get a custom fitting. So I'm trying to learn the different variables and specs and what effect they have. This was very informative! Thanks again!

Jim I’m new to club repair . Have done all my own for sometime now. Have I made mistakes along the way? You bet I have. That’s how you learn. I’ve enjoyed the search for better techniques and I must say you have delivered on that front. When weighting out a club you’re essentially setting it up for what ever swing weight the customer is asking for. Thanks Jim.! John

No. My Titleist 690s are all D2, 2deg flat (I have a bending machine); 915 D3, 10.5, 44-3/4, D4; RBZ Tour 3W, 25deg, D2.5; MacTec 5W, 18deg D2.5; Taylor Made 5R, 21deg, D2; MacTec 7W, 24deg, D2; Adams 6R, 28deg, D4; these are fitted with the original AJ Tech Z42, cherry red shafts. I made all of the above except my driver. My Vokey Wedges are also 2deg flat; 48/7, 54/14, 58/12 & 62/7, all D5, with Wedge shafts. I have the same SW machine, and CPM reader. My coach taught me a lot. Oh yeah, Scotty Cameron, 1997 Laguna Putter. I enjoy the game, love helping with kids golf camps, and helping friends when asked. 🤪

Well I didn't know there was so much to consider but added 16gram weights by extending my P760 irons 7/8" and the weights that were 7/8" long from Golfworks weigh 16 grams. I didn't know about the plastic inserts you mentioned so I epoxy glued a stainless steel washer to keep the weight from sliding past the extension. 3 layers of tape, Golf Pride midsize CP2 grips and the clubs are now very well balanced. Before they felt bottom heavy and I couldn't feel the club head very well or control it near as much. NS pro 105 shafts made this a success, otherwise the 16 gram weights would have been too heavy if I had R300 shafts. Also, was worried that making the regular flex metal shafts longer would make them too flexible. Only noticed this slightly a couple times when trying to hit my 3 iron as hard as I can. Since they are now an inch longer I don't need to bend them 2 up. Penny for thoughts and/or SW ballpark estimate?

Alan, I would frequency match the equipment without any added weight then add weight for the desired weight and then recheck the frequency to see if it is in your allowed range, if not then trim again. SW is predicated on the length where frequency is determine by trimming and weight

Good stuff. I found heavier swing weight promotes a smoother swing for me... being able to feel the club head throughout the swing causes me to work WITH the club and let it do the work. So to speak.

It's so individual. I like to have a heavy club and make the head feel super light so I can whip it. Like a paintbrush flicking water off its bristles. Don't go to cookie cutter fitters! They don't care what you are trying to feel...only what they can sell you.

There 3-kick points; lower to hit the ball higher; mid-kick for average height; and the higher kick point that we better players like. We have a better feel of the head, allowing us to maneuver the ball, high, low, left or right, and controlling distance/spin. I played the 550 Wishon Blades for awhile, but my friend wanted to golf, so I gave him my set. I fitted him, and bent the irons 2deg upright. He loves them.

Best video ever about this 🤓 I use midsize grips and have discovered that they tend to be all over the board on weight. I've found some grips that I like but they are on the heavy side. I thought to add weights at the tip to get my swing weight back up if I use those grips. But of course... I have another complication? I use ascending mass shafts. Does that mean a different weight at the tip for every club to have an even swing weight throughout? Or are they designed to have different swing weights?

Very clear video!! Currently, I would like to change ferrules of my iron and wedge, and adjust the swing weight because originally was from D1 to D3 in random way (Modus3 105s +0.5", Mizuno jpx921 forged, plus4 grip, manufactury mount). So, i need to buy a set of brass weights before pull down all heads, do you have any suggestion about most used weight? (I would not buy all weight 2g-9g) I have around 90mph with #7, not so fast tempo, currently I set D3 with lead tape in all iron #4-#pw .... although D3 seems ok, I have in mind to set D2 for #4-#9 or keep D3. Thanks for the video. I just had my clubs spine orientated and FLO’d, and had the swing weight set at D2 for most except PW, GW and SW, which were set higher. They were mostly C9 or close so not a significant weight gain. I’ve been searching the net, without success, to find out what this change in weight, plus spine orientation, plus FLO does to the lie angle, if any impact at all. I’m playing tomorrow so I’ll be interested to see how they go. Thanks in advance if you can provide an answer.

I am changing shafts from Dynamic Gold S300 XP to Dynamic Gold S300 105’s on my JPX800 Pro Forged Irons. I just did only the 7 iron. When removing the OEM shaft on the club there was a 4gm tip weight. I installed the weight in the new shaft. So all total the new club weighs 424 gm. The original setup weighed 433 gm. So I was looking to provide a lighter shaft but with a bit more consistency as I’m 70 yr old. I hit my 7 iron ~ 150 yards carry prior to the change. I recently went for a fitting that suggested JPX921 Hot Metal irons with the DG S300 105 shafts so I thought they would work for my irons due to similar head weights etc.What’s your input on this change? I will be testing live on course soon before making any other changes to my set.

I can honestly say that if you did not post your videos, I would not be able to duplicate my clubs, I have found a new passion: I now have four iron sets, each a bit different (CB/MB), but still my fit, swing weight, length, and so on. I do have one question.... I have a set of Cleveland CG1 Black MB irons, that are non-conforming. These blades are my preferred choice to play, even though I have tried to replace, or suffice with another set of built irons, but to no mental avail. Can the grooves be filled, or something be done by, either by Cleveland, or another service, to save these irons from the trash bin ?

If I were to cut down my shaft 5/8 inch on my irons cause they are .25" over standard length and way too long, could I add tungsten powder down the shaft and cork it? If I have titleist blades will this affect the club heads sweet spot or anything like that? They are at D3 right now and I like that weight but I have to choke down almost an inch on the grip every time cause I am only 5'7. I believe they will be at C9 or so after the cut. Combined with a lighter grip and some tungsten powder is this feasible? Thanks, I really like your videos!

jim, this video is a bit old, however, I found that I really like MCA C6 Black iron-hybrid shafts. They are a bit light at 80 grams so i need to add weight to iron heads. I like the Golfworks TS-1 head but they lack of a weight port is a problem as the ID of the top of the C6 shaft is pretty small, too small for graphite shaft tip weights. While I can add lead tape to the heads, that is not aesthetically ideal. Do you have any other thoughts on how to increase the SW with this head/shaft combo? Bob from Logansport.

Love this video! I went to a "fitting"(more of a sales pitch) at club champion and left super disappointed. I decided I will at least get an idea of what is best for me. He had me swinging d4 which I felt is way too heavy for me(I try to swing very passive/non violent). I also thought they were way too upright. Basically the swing was taking TONS of effort and I was pulling everything. Would you say learning my preferred swing weight would be a good starting point to educate myself(I have an efficient swing...7 iron 180 carry non violent feeling...feel like I'm finally ready to dial in equipment). I feel like I should be mid C at most. Quick question regarding adding weight to lighten swing weight. Do you ever add weight in different places like just below the grip or midway down the shaft? For some reason I can feel the club in that area.
@McGolf5 жыл бұрын
Jacob R I usually only add weight to the butt if absolutely needed. Particularly if you like lighter, adding weight is not something I suggest. Try a lighter shaft matched to your flex and try right at D0

@@McGolf thanks So much. This is the beginning of my journey to understand equipment. I am going with a starting point of what I want to feel. In my mind people have 3 options for a feeling..1. You want a heavy club to feel light..or like a paint brush at the and light head 2. You want the weight spread out evenly across the club 3. You want it to feel like a hammer. Is that a good base line? I like choice 1.

trying once more to do some counterbalancing on some irons/woods- i have some 90 gram secret grips to try out so im gonna start with a iron that is about 1.5-2 inches longer so as to get a swing weight with the 90 gram grip to a d1-d-0 instead of the e-1 with a normal grip. I tried putting a secret grip on a driver years ago that was maybe 1/2 inch longer than standard but didnt have much success achieving any sort of counterbalance feel like i have with a putter that I made. Also it was not any improvement in ball striking-it was worse. I have some heavier driver heads I could try out- 210/215 ish. If I put a secret grip on a standard d-0 iron it would be around c-0/b-9 or less-so I guess I will try every scenario. Sergio Garcia use 25 gram end weights- but has heavier driver heads to offset it. I know swing weight isnt supposed to matter when counterbalancing but in my experience swing weight always matters when building a golf club. Any suggestions would be helpful-thxs again.
@McGolf4 жыл бұрын
Chris. The idea of counter balancing is to get weight into the hands for finding the golf clubs during the swing. When adding weight to get to a particular SW is doing nothing more than adding weight. Now every golfer is different and more weight might be the answer. but in general its just to put weight in the hands.

Quick question. I have new Titleist MB's and they have s300's in them, They're good but I get too much spin, I ended up buying s400 tour issued. I measured all the swing weight in the s300's and they're all perfectly D4. I like the D4 swing weight. I put the s400 TI in the 4 Iron and hit it and it felt heavy, I checked the swing weight and it was D7!!! I was trying to figure out why it was D7 so I measured the length, it was about half an inch longer than the s300 4 iron shaft. This begs the question. How do I find out what length I need for my s400's? I just want them standard and if I do cut them back to standard, how do I add weight to the back of my club so i can achieve the D4 swing weight? I hope you can reply soon! Thank you very much! -Christian
@McGolf6 жыл бұрын
A few things, 1) they may feel heavy but are you hitting them well, if so, let it be. 2) if you are not hitting them well say hitting them fat then trim down and the swing weight will com to you. 3) to find the proper length you to get fit for length, you may not be able to get fit for length solely, but you will get your answers. 4) the difference in the S shafts is weight sorting not weight.

I need some info on counterbalancing- a few yrs back I tried to do some counterbalancing with the heavier butt weights in a driver- even made a longer driver to offset the swing weight- I tried the heavy boccari 92 gram grips on a few clubs - nothing worked- think I might give it a go again since a counterbalanced putter is simply magic. This time I’m gonna try some lighter 10-20 gram butt weights in some irons and maybe one driver- I wish I lived closer so I could come in and let you do some experimenting but if you have any suggestions id appreciate it.

i also read that the distribution at 60% (the shaft + grip weight being 60% of the head weight) is a good ratio to go by.
@MississippiWopGenius3964 жыл бұрын
just tried that and I put a couple of drivers together one head was 199/65 shaft and the other was 197 head/70 gram shaft with tape and grip at around d6-d-8 at 46 plus inches- which ive pretty much been using within a 1/2 or so
@MississippiWopGenius3964 жыл бұрын
I was able to get exactly 60% on 3 clubs - I weighed head/ shaft /grip and shaft with grip tape which added 2-3 grams with the way i build it up.

If at standard length, you are just slightly over the standard for a shaft at 130 and much over for the grip at 80 g and a couple pieces of tape may subtract another .5 of a point. an educated guess would put you into the mid to high C Range

It depends on the flex. In any cased yes you would trim as you are adding weight making the club more flexible. however you have to be careful when using stronger shafts you may not need too.

Kirk, Unless the swing weight is completely out of hand heavy I will not counter balance just for the sake of getting a swing weight. In my opinion total weight is more important. That said when you place weight in the grip section of the club the golfer will usually experience a tighter pattern of dispersion. This is not a 100% given as every golfer has a slightly different tendency. In the day long drive guys counter weighted clubs for more club head speed. Now they are so strong I see that much any more. Thanks for the question

Thanks for the prompt answer. I forgot that you were in Ohio. I live in Akron and years ago when I drove truck, I went through Waverly several times. I'm thinking it was on my way to Xenia but that may be way off! I didn't check the map. Perhaps I'll take a drive down that way and stop in during your business hours. Enjoy!

How do you feel about MOI matching vs. swing weight matching? I use the 565's btw - like butter when you hit them square, just wish I'd had a better fitting for shafts and swing weight.
@axnjxn914 жыл бұрын
Interested as well. Gradually adding SW is as close to MOI matching as you can get with little effort, says the internet. But I’d like to know how many points should be added per iron no. and in which direction.
@reurioste4 жыл бұрын
if you go 1/2 inch increments you get higher swingweight by .65 per club. i.e. 5 iron at 38 inches at d1 your 6 iron at 37.5 inches would swingweight at d1.65 on thru the set. if you use 3/8 inch increment you increase swingweight by 1/2 swingweight per club.

how do you add weight to a club you just cut down let's say 1". can you just use lead powder and pour it down the shaft and regrip it.
@christophereduardo57438 жыл бұрын
I have a question. you said you want about 7 gram difference between each iron head. then the shafts vary in weight as well. to get your desired swing weight, the total weight of the assembled club will be all over the place. so what's the point of weight sorting the shafts and heads in order to progressively bring loner clubs lightest to shorter clubs heaviest if you have to alter weight to achieve swing weight when all is done. thanks
@McGolf8 жыл бұрын
Christopher, Swing weighting used to be the only way to truly universally measure a golf club. It is a feel measurement too. Better players have a sensitive feel and tell a change and that change through them out of sync. Average golfers can sense the change but it just takes more of a change to be felt. I use it as a way to ensure the consistency of the build. In short, doing the checking of weight is just a really good practice to make sure we are not building junk for the golfer. If we can give a golfer a consistent tool then he /she can concentrate on the golf resulting in lower scores. Thanks

+McGolf Custom Clubs. so weight sorting the heads using 7g gap and sorting shafts from lightest to heaviest just helps give balance. after that, goal is to achieve desired sw no matter what the total weight of the assembled club is when done? please advise this is correct since I'm running into this confusion building my set. thanks.
@McGolf8 жыл бұрын
absolutely Christopher 7g head weight and light to heavy in shafts and grips.If you are using standard steel shafts and standard grips and the 5 iron wt is about 256g then you should see a d-2 to d-3 SW. If you are an aggressive swinger you might want to add weight. If you are a smooth swinger then a lighter shaft will be best, all things created equal

Hey Jim on frequency matching can you frequency match a butt trim only steel shaft or graphite for that matter? Thank you..!

you can check it but changing it is problematic. Nippon has some discrete length irons that are .370. It think one could match those

Question for you kind Sir: What would you say the average swing weight is on the PGA tour when it comes to wedges? More specifically, Pros using a dynamic gold tour issue s400/ 132g shaft? And lastly what do you think the highest playable swing weight is for a wedge with an s400? Thx
@McGolf3 жыл бұрын
I would imagine with the average increase of 12 grams to the shaft they would see an increase of just over one additional SW so, at or about D5 -6 depending the on grip and length of club obviously.

@@McGolf I ask because I have some pinhawk sl club heads that are 272g that I want to experiment with. Manufacturer suggests a 7i shaft cutt at the tip for these club heads @ 37". However, I love the heavy swing weight on my 54 vokey wedges (do you know the weight of a sm6 vokey 54 wedge head?) It is paired with an s400 tour issue wedge stiff shaft @ 36" (don't know exact swing weight). Could I install an a 36" s400 tour wedge shaft to a 272g head... do you think the stiffness would be like an x100 or be an unplayable type of stiffness? What would happen if I installed an uncutt s400 tour issue wedge shaft at 37" with a 272g head?

Hi I'm getting fitted with Sterling one length irons in 8 iron length I have a sample 6 iron made up by a club builder The shaft is steelfiber i80 S flex and swing weight is D4 The builder has tipped it 3inch as it says on the tipping chart what would happen if he tipped it 2.5inch Also thinking about going to D3 would that affect my flight I'm hitting a little draw or straight My swing speed is 82-84mph with this club and carry is 175 yards Thanks Steve
@McGolf7 жыл бұрын
Steve, It sounds like he/she did a good job if you are hitting a draw to straight shot!! one swing weight point will do nothing. If he tipped it 1/2" less than the current six iron you should see the following: -more snap into the ball, -a slightly higher ball flight -a touch more draw - slightly softer feel. the modification you are asking about results in minor changes above. nothing drastic . the SW should remain the same. thanks
@thailandpattaya77257 жыл бұрын
McGolf Custom Clubs Thanks about the advice I was just thinking about tipping the 5 iron in single length as I think I might not get enough distance being its 8iron length And also going to D3 SW gives me more options as in the winter time or windy days my ball flight is mid and when add bit lead tape it goes higher great for the summer time Tom Wishon done a great job on these Sterling clubs And great videos your doing keep it up Thanks Steve
@McGolf7 жыл бұрын
The 5 iron is designed to give you the proper distance at the at the same length club. That is the benefit of the Sterling set. The lower number irons are of a different design with more COR to help give the added distance where the higher numbered irons are more traditional in design. I have had the same issue with my golfers. You must reset and make the same swing as with the 8 iron and be very suprised

McGolf Custom Clubs Thanks I don't have the 5iron built yet as the club builder is on holiday he'll be back in 5days I'm just not 100% sure on the tip it just feels a bit stiff I'll have a word with him to see what he thinks about it I was surprised how far these irons go my old 6iron goes 165yards so I've gain 10yards and it's still winter time Do you think the steelfiber i80 shafts would work in wedges I'm just trying to get every club feeling the same weight Thanks again Steve

Hi. I would like to shorten my driver by 1/2 inch. I have 3extra layers of tape under the grip. Will I need extra weight adding to the club so as not to change the sw too much. Or will it not be noticeable. Thanks
@McGolf7 жыл бұрын
Steve, Shortening the club is worth -3 sw points. If you get a midsize grip instead of the tape you may feel only a slight change in swing weight. try if that is your need and then begin to add lead tape to the sole for feel

I received a comment that did not post here for some reason, and paraphrasing, that the explanation of the Sw is wrong. That is it a measurement of the moment of the club. not what is feels like when picked up. Unfortunately I would have to disagree. measuring the moment of the club and the swing weight of the club are found using different machines and gives the reading in different units (whatever a swing point could by verses a moment measurement in grams and length and time) I would agree that the SW and moment are affected by the some of the same parameters of the clubs such as length, and weight. The applications are slightly different.
@mikecr4916 Жыл бұрын
It all seems no better than arbitrary and detrimental to progress. A better standard would be tested best inertia, with each club, for a standard golf ball. The fitted clubs would exactly hit that inertia.
@wixsta8 жыл бұрын
So before building a set of clubs, you add the weight of the grips, shaft, club head, etc. How then do you take those measurements and calculate (or what do you use to calculate) what the swing weight of a club will be before building it?
@McGolf8 жыл бұрын
In todays set for the average player the iron swing weight is D-2 where the driver is D-0, These numbers were much higher just a few short years ago. The iron swingweights assume a grip that weighs in the high 40s to 50 g with a shaft that weighs about 95- 110 and a 5 iron head that comes in at 254- 256g. if you want heavier add weight to the head or you can remove weight from the head by grinding. This is not recommended. you could also add weight to the grip. Keep in mind when modifying swing weight the total weight is also impacted.

Why not MOI weight?
@dzidolgitara5 жыл бұрын
I am sorry man . there is a lot more to this then that . If you ad weight to a club head which already hosel heavy you changing position of the sweet spot on the head face . usually sweet spot will move to words the hole and up . which can screw up the club . you have to be very careful about this things
@McGolf5 жыл бұрын
Truly, Weight can move the Center of Gravity (CoG) mostly known as the sweet spot. however typically that take about 10 grams or better to make that happen. dont forget about the flex of the club can be affected also. The way weight is added can also be a factor in the launch or spin i.e. using weighted goop from a heat gun. What is presented is a basic way to get the job done

Swing weight isn’t about making the club heavier or lighter. It’s about balancing the club. It should have always been called “swing balance”...and not “swing weight”.
