There are many times, even if I have my camera in the truck, and my husband isn't in a stopping mood, I will take a photograph it in my mind's eye as we pass something. Those photographs ALWAYS turn out great! :)

Haha! Same! My husband drives by most of my best photos! He's a “”Why don't you just use your phone?” guy. He doesn't get it. I have shot so many pics from the car, boat, motorhome, and bake of the motorcycle. They are sometimes good, but never as good as the ones that will forever be trapped in my mind.

In my experience, I’ve learned to stay away from photography groups. For sometime they were a great way to meet local photographers and to “Talk shop,” but ultimately I realized they essentially took the same shot. Day-in and day-out. For beginners, I would highly recommend them, but once you venture out and begin seeing outside the box, there’s no going back. For myself, I know I’ll get an incredible shot regardless of where I go. That’s not being cocky, but rather confident in my ability to “Find” the shot. One strategy i was taught was to choose a lens (I have many manual focus lenses) and spend no more than 1-2 hours at any one particular location and approach the scene as though you’re there to create a documentary. My goto focal length is 40mm.

Great breakdown of the "Secrets." Now and then I force myself to wander around a spot where in my head I've said, "There's not much there worth shooting." Once I start looking around I start to see those little pockets of visual interest. Look in the small spaces, shoot slow when the wind is blowing things around, look in the corners and pockets. My favorite landscape lenses are telephotos. Because they let me hone in on and explore the details, those little parts that make up the whole. I forgot that when I first started shooting news and features for a small publisher back in the film days. I kept just taking images of the whole scene. They were boring. I almost got fired. Then I went back and studied the Photojournalism edition of the Time-Life Photography series. What I saw of the great news photographers was that they shot the detail, that cut of the whole that conveyed the core essence. They shot at different angles. Low to high, looking down, on the edges. They used the components of composition to give the image impact. I incorporated that into my work and by the time I left the owner and publisher told me, "You've made yourself valuable around here." From that guy, it was like winning a major award. He wasn't easy to please, but he also demanded excellence. So when you look at a scene look inside the scene for those special images that beg to be explored. Again, a great video on starting to see, not just look.

You are a philosopher of the photograph. I've been shooting on and off for 45 years and you've opened my eyes to how many different ways I've missed 'the' photograph and just gone out blinkered with an idea. When I listen and watch these videos you're helping me discover photography again like I had forgotten I did when aged 15 and was surprised by being given an already old, 35 mm (possibly Zenith) 35mm camera with what might have been a 35 mm lens. Within 4 years my preference had become, and remains for B&W. Thank you for re-opening my eyes. Even though I now realise you'll never see this comment!

especially in a group environment like those your described, Alex, or a place where a particular scene is "the one" to get in the bag, my favourite thing to remember is "look behind you" for what you're missing by following along with everyone else's ideas!

The viewpoint section reminds me of the famous photo by Erich Lessing showing the Austria Chancellor Figl and the represantatives of the 4 allied occupying nations with the signed Austrian Sate Treaty on the balcony of Belvedere Palace in Vienna 1955. Lessing was the only photographer not in the signing room but among the crowd waiting in the park. To Austrians it is one of the most iconic photos of the 20th century, together with Figls words "Österreich ist frei!" (Austria is free). Rumor has it that Lessing was late for the signing and could not get into the the palace in time so he waited outside and was the only one having the photo of that historic moment.

My wife was good at seeing pictures when we were out. She didn't like portrait, or close up photography. She had a good eye for the "view" but she didn't like the technical side of taking a picture. Never could get her to work on that side of using her camera.

I was a working photographer from my early 20s to my late 30s. Then my life changed and needed to go to work for someone, well, for many reasons and I became a non working artist as I call it. When I was a "professional" I was shooting weddings and portraits. Good money, but had it become a drudge and a very mechanical process for me so leaving it behind, so I thought, was a good thing. Little did I know, that by quitting, my passion for photography came back to me and I was out taking photos all the time and really enjoying myself. I thought of what I would like to take photos of and I always loved the outdoors so I started shooting landscapes and it was sooo much fun. I produced some great photographs and displayed them in my home and that was so rewarding too. I have sold a few prints over the years but never wanted to start a business again so I stayed a non working artist. I want to say, I suffer from depression. It's crippling at times but I still go out and shoot photos. I still love to go out in the country, parks, and forests to take pictures or, just cary my camera around with my dog by my side, and enjoy the beauty and moment I am in. Why am I writing all this? It has nothing to do with the subject of this video to be honest, but what it does give me, is something that I haven't enjoyed in a long time. When I was a working photographer I had tons of fellow photographers to talk to and discuss things like you do in your videos. After leaving that behind, there wasn't that kind of camaraderie of like minded people to recharge my creative batteries.I really miss those conversations and discussion as it fueled my passion. There are camera clubs, but they all seemed a little too regimented and also, petty so that didn't work. Now, listening to your videos, and seeing the comments, I am starting to feel that spark heating up. Over the past several months I have been bingeing on your content here and look forward to all the new post you make as well as going back to videos I have watched before. So, in a babbling and long way, I am writing to say you have helped me out of a photo funk here with your posts, I now feel that same energy I had when I was with other artist and most importantly, just wanted to say thank you. P.S. This is a great video and so many nuggets that I had to listen to it more than once. 📷

Good points - all. One tip - invest in a microphone and some audio gear. So many photographers creating content seem to blow it when creating video about their passion. You can have a bad shot, a bad frame but blow the audio and you ruin the entire project.

Awesome stuff, I love this type of content because it always inspires me to keep shooting things. One thing I read one time that was really interesting to me was the advice to shoot the same locations repeatedly. Of course explore new places too but shooting the same places forces you to get creative to get new images. Sometimes we take for granted what we see all the time and I think this video is a great example of this. One of my favorite photos is a super close macro shot of some mushrooms that popped up in my garden bed. The grass around it looking like a forest and the mushrooms popped amazingly. Keep experimenting.

One inspiration for me is Dutch painter Piet Mondriaan. He's known for his abstracts in primary colours, but when you go through his work in chronological order, you see his 'abstract eye' developing. The shapes and colours become detached from the meaning of what you see (what you see vs what it is). You can't go that abstract with a photograph (there always has to be something real in front of the lens) but I also see this with Alex Webb and the Belgian photographer Harry Gruyaert.

Howzit Alex! Thanks for a great video. I wonder if the very young would see the unusual quicker than us oldies who have seen so much more of the same old thing so to become a bit stereotyped. The reason I don’t join our photo club outings much is because they tend to all stand together and photo the same thing i.e. end of a pier photographing a sunset! I’m afraid I prefer being alone and think creatively for myself in my own head space. I find it very calming to be ‘in the zone’ and more satisfying to come home with an original photograph or two. I frequently go out for photo days with a photo pal and we both enjoy the day by having company but photo independence. I love your creative videos and look forward to more. Many thanks.

Personally I doubt it. Most young people are too obsessed by their smartphones to even notice anything happening in front of them. Also photography as an artform is heavily dependent on understanding the exposure triangle. Those of us who started with a manual film camera had to learn the basics. The young have got accustomed to instant gratification and expect to just click and have the camera or phone to make the decisions.

Nailed that perfectly in your video . On occasions I hit the bullseye with a sequence of shots that have universal appeal to photographers and non photographers alike . When it happens you just know it and keep shooting, even though you have acquired several keepers already . Why : because the next one could be the one and it requires working the scene in the way you did when you had your first camera , except now, you now know so much more but reman flexible and open to see more with greater simplicity in telling the story . Certainly , practice is the key and there is no room for being complacent . Sure, take the obvious shot and then move on and look for telling the story from a different perspective , just as the video illustrated flawlessly . Fantastic reminder to us all to use our eyes, our feet and imagination to see what is before us .
