How to tame a Blues Deluxe

Updates:
I made this 23 second video on a break at work just to show the device in case someone with a Blues Deluxe could use it.
The iPhone audio cuts out in the middle when I her hit the strings because the amp is so loud. With the tamer in, you can crank the preamp and still get distortion at a more manageable volume.
The Blues Deluxe has a linear volume pot that’s sensitive at lower volume, basically making it all or nothing with little in between. This device helps give you a more usable range.
It is my understanding that an attenuator is a device that comes between the amp and the speaker and reduces the power going to speaker. This is just a volume knob in the effects loop, and you could use a volume pedal to the same effect.
For years people told me my #fenderbluesdeluxe amp was too loud...finally...problem solved! I get the tones I want, and it doesn't knock pictures off the walls...unless I need it to!

I never understood these because you're not getting the power amp distortion and saturation that comes from legitimately cranking up an amp. I guess if you have an amp that has no master volume it could be useful but it's just not an attenuator and it's not going to get you "cranked tube amp sound." because you're not really cranking your amp up, you're just turning down the preamp signal. The output tubes aren't being cranked at all.

Attenuator kills a lot of the tone as well. Anything done to the signal to lower volume/gain is going to reduce the speaker movement, thus reducing the tonal qualities of it. If you want to get good tone, and be quiet, just plug headphones into the amp.

not the sound of a cranked amp. When an amp is cranked the pre amp and output vales are at full chat now if you take your thingy and plug it in to the effect loop all its doing is making the signal smaller from the pre amp and sending it to the power amp part of your circuit where the power out put valves are. So what your left with is a can of bees. Just go get a good attenuator, spend the money and be happy.

I have one. It is not a power soak. The amp only sounds good if the power tubes, 6L6’s are driven hot. You can get a distortion sound from an overloaded preamp section but to really rock the power section must be driven. In fact the preamp doesn”t contribute much. Tom Scholtz drove his power output tubes and cut the volume just before the speaker cabinet. A 5 watt all tube amp into a sealed 12 inch cabinet (not open back) will knock your socks off and it will be fricken loud.

no, you get a cranked pre-amp sound.. the signal going to the power tubes is still lower.. therefore the sweet power amp breakup you want isn't there.. and wont be without driving the poweramp.. then if you want it quieter.. you have to use an attenuator. you can take any pedal and chop the gain at the loop.. same thing.. yes it quieter.. no it's not allowing the amp to breathe.. snake oil for those who don't understand how their tube (or any) amp works..

I have a fender deluxe, and the master volume only applies to the “drive” channel. The “normal” channel doesn’t have a master volume control, so if you wanted to crank the preamp gain, you’d need to put a volume control in the effects loop, or use an attenuator.
@alexschrodt
@alexschrodt 7 ай бұрын
It doesn’t appear as though anyone actually answered your question, so… The difference between using an attenuator like this and just turning down the master volume is that the attenuator enables the preamp to be overdriven at lower output volumes, whereas just turning down the master volume (which in this case is the only volume control for the non-drive channel) will reduce the amount of drive/gain along with the reduction in volume. That’s the intended result of attenuators in general, at least- I’m unfamiliar with this particular amp, so it’s possible that other comments have led me astray re: my explanation of this particular scenario’s use case, but in general, preserving the sound of overdriven preamp tubes at lower volumes is the point of using an attenuator like this ..,

Nope only for tube amps it's a power sponge basically like the peavy Windsors all of those tube amps front the small 25watt combo all the way to the big 100 watt head have one built in, it's so you can drive the master and preamp volumes on a tube amp and get that true tube amp breaking up distortion or crunchy sound with out blowing the windows out of the house and you can play very quietly with out losing any tone. Iike this I use this same one in the video on my tube amps that don't have a power sponge like my 100 watt special edition marshall vintage modern with full matching cabs I have two full size cans and this thing quiets it down nicely to where I can enjoy the pure raw sounds out of my vintage modern with out blowing out the windows of every house on the block at midnight on a Friday night while up drinking and jamming with my buddies at my house or even just to practice and get my pedel boards and everything setup correctly for my vintage modern for a show so that way I get to hear the actual tone with out blowing my ear drums out getting my guitar rig setup few days before a show and I even use it live to be able to get that raw cranked up marshall tone out of my vintage modern with out clipping the mic and pa system and over powering the whole band it actually has made my guitar setup sound alot better live cuse I don't have to use my ,100 watt boss katana MK2 at Venus that are smaller or indoors that would kill ppls ear drums or max out the decibel meter if I used my vintage modern so now I can use my marshall stack etc every gig now thanks to this little device. But they had to make one to be able to work in my marshall vintage modern and they will make one for any make or model tube amp at same price as one that doesn't have to be specially made they work amazing and great guys to work with and I got lucky that the one I got made for my marshall vintage modern I got it to work with any other tube amp I got by getting female to male guitar amp cables two of them so that way you can use it on any amp that has efx loop jack sockets to far apart for it to fit and you can have it easily accessible like that on stage if you need to turn up a little bit during a gig or live show

This is just a volume knob. So you only really get your preamp cranked. With a $$$ attenuator, it soaks the power, so you can crank everything but still control volume.

No, attenuators reduce power. This is just another volume knob but allows you to get a different character of drive at more reasonable volumes. A volume pedal would work too.

No you are not getting a cranked tube amp sound at a low volume. As you can obviously hear its killing the power tube saturation....might as well just turn the volume on the amp down

I have a Gibson Maestro tube Amp. It is a practice Amp they used at cotton music in Nashville and they gave it to me when I bought my electric guitar in about 1979 or 81. Can't remember exactly. At that time they were located in Hillsboro village. It has cigarette burns on top from laying them on there. Still sounds great.

I mean, that’s why God invented the master volume pot… would be useful on an amp without an MV like a reverb though. To give credit, maybe this blues deluxe doesn’t have a master. Mine does

The Blues Deluxe has a very fine line between “can’t hear it” and “way too loud.” This solves that problem and gives you a much more usable range in between. I’ve heard that it’s something to do with a linear vs logarithmic master volume. That could be replaced by an amp tech, but this is cheaper. But yeah…on a lot of other amps, it would be totally pointless.
