Nakamura went for a risky play, but it didn't work. Still, it was great to see; when do GM's ever play the King's Gambit? Hats off to Nakamura for such a bold move.

@@PowerPlayChessSure, but Nepomniachtchi’s theoretical understanding and knowledge of the opening is far better. Hikaru was out of book after just a few moves - I mean even I know the best line Hikaru should have played after d6.

@@rainingglass5554 I'm only 2100. Hikaru would crush me in 25 moves in almost every game. But I have studied the king's gambit in depth, and I basically know every top line in almost every variation for at least 15 moves in depth. It was very clear that Hikaru did not know much about the opening at all.

Hikaru did not seem to have any idea about what he was doing. I was shocked that he still played the king’s gambit.

I play the Kings Gambit (mere patzer 2000 to 2100) and I play the knight c3 line that Daniel suggested. As soon as Nakamura went pawn d3 he was dead in the water, way too passive. My idol Mr Morphy was sat in the opera box looking down very disapprovingly!

I've never been a fan of the Kieseritzky for White. There is more than one decent option for Black. I hope you have decent results with Nc3!

Ding played his N to h5 and achieved a great position against Magnus in a rapid. The Kings gambit is unsound between very strong players of about equal strength. Early ...d6 by black, against Nf3, also spoils much of White's fun.

A bust for the KIng's Gambit? In any case somewhat optimistic of Nakamura to imagine that Carlsen wouldn't have a good line for the KG up his sleeve!?

@@giacomo5626 right, it is noticeable that everyone wants black in Armageddon even with a lot less time. Giving Carlsen draw odds is hardly what Naka would want🙄

Magnus knew this line very well, as many of his fans. He played it against Fedorev in 2004, and THAT game secured 13 yo Magnus his 3rd GM norm.

Does black have a big advantage at 6:36? Nxc7+ to deprive black of castling rights and then retreat the knight to d5 to protect the c3 bishop. Actually, maybe even retreat the knight to b5 to hit the black queen also?

Instead of 12...0-0-0, I mentioned 12...Bg4. If 13 Nd5 Qxb2 14 Bc3 Qa3 15 Nxc7+ Kd7 16 Nd5 Be6 is great for Black - the king will be caught. And 16 Nb5 Qa4 followed by ...f5 is also very good for Black.
@thishex
@thishex Жыл бұрын
@@PowerPlayChess How about 17. Nxd6 after 16. Nb5 Qa4. Assuming black played Kd7 after the original knight check and now must take on d6, this looks spicy. I didn't put any of this into an engine obviously.

This line for Black almost DOES seem like a refutation of the King's Gambit! As Daneil King said, this line gives Black a solid position and a relatively easy game...compared to White's awkward pawns and underdeveloped pieces. So, if that's the case, then why should White play the King's Gambit in the first place? The element of surprise? Hoping that your opponent doesn't know the correct way to play against this opening?

To be honest I’m sort of disappointed in another opening failure from Nakamura especially this time could have been prevented by putting it in the database and see if the opponent is familiar with it! Sharp opening is always drawish if everyone comes out very well prepared

Such an awful position to play as White. Brilliant opening for Black when it comes to practical play. All the moves were so natural and for White everything seemed very subtle and difficult. Felt the awkwardness of White pieces even from the home couch.

dont like armageddon analysis too much because one side has to win and makes moves according to this, Naka said in his analysis that he made deliberately inferior moves because he wanted to keep the game alive instead of making a draw because for him draw=loss and it did not matter if he loses

Don’t buy that from Naka. He got caught fair and square and he should admit it. Very often his skill in speed play is enough to pull him through, but not against Carlsen.

I bet he regrets that early d3 move, speaking of hindsight. If he had played Nc3 (as u mentioned), the engine line goes Nc6 d4 Qxd4 Bxf4, so improved development and no irritating Black pawn on f4…
