It may not be the best or most popular way, but it is possible to tap into a wire without using a special tap connector or solder. This short video shows you how to tap a wire if your preferred methods are not available.
In a perfect world, we'd recommend tapping into those wires using solder: • How to tap into a wire...
...or by using a special tap connector: • How to tap into a wire...
But what if that tap needs to happen NOW, and you don't have access to those other ways? That's when you can use the method shown here.

It looks go on a table with lots of room and light. Try doing that in a cramped engine compartment with bad lighting and little to no room and just about 6 inches of wire to do all that. Sometimes you just have to get down in the mud when you are wrestling a pig!

Interesting way of connecting two wires. I wouldn't use most electrical tape though. If it starts to warm up, the sticky stuff tends to migrate out. Self amalgamating tape is way more effective. Just wrap it around, pulling on it as you wind it around. Solid piece of insulation.

Plus he's using a decent gauge wire on a workbench. Do it in your vehicle with a small wire. But with good knife skills and some commen sense it wasn't that hard. My issue was the wire was to small for the t-taps to properly splice the sheath and make connection to the wire, this did eliminate that problem and allowed me to complete my project.

At the end when you wrap the wires in electrical tape, would shrink tubing work as well?
@crutchfield

Yes! Shrink tubing could be used instead of the tape. Just make sure to slide the tubing onto the wires before joining them as shown
@dunebasher1971

Heatshrink would be ideal, but the problem normally is that you're tapping into a wire that's part of a harness and so you don't have clear access to one end of the wire to slide the heatshrink on.

Is this a fire hazard for led pod reverse lights wired directly to existing reverse lights?
@crutchfield
@crutchfield 6 ай бұрын
It is not a fire hazard to wire a backup camera with LED lights to the reverse light circuit in a vehicle as long as no bare wires are left exposed. If the LED pod reverse lights use similar power to a typical backup camera, then we would expect the same results as long as no wires are left exposed which could lead to a short or a fire from a short.

So if I were to use a 9 conductor in my factory radio doing it this way should work?
@crutchfield
@crutchfield 3 жыл бұрын
If you are referring to using the 9 conductor wire as a means to get and audio signal from a compatible factory radio to a new amp, then yes this can work and comes with the criteria that new speaker wire will be ran from the amp to each speaker.

We do not have information on the gauge of those wires to know if the Posi Tap connectors are the right size for it. I can tell you the taps we carry can work from 10 gauge down to 22 gauge wire. If you can find out the gauge of the wire on the ebike, and its in this range, 10-22 gauge, then they will work. Here's the ones we carry right now: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYTVc227/shopsearch/posi_tap.html

@mobmob5944

If you don’t have solder you can melt a penny or nickel with a torch like solder and if you dont have tape melt some hot glue sticks to insulate the wires or if you dont want to get a felony just melt the glue stick after you braid the wires together also use some flux if you melt pennys or solder helps clean the wire and better cohesion
