This is actually just straight up good advice. Let kids be kids around the chessboard with no expectation or pressure - if they express interest in the game itself, great, if not then leave them be.

Exactly. This is how I learned to read without any adult forcing me. My parents bought children's picture books, but they never read them to me or forced me to read them. I eventually out of boredom decided to try and apply what I knew about the alphabet onto the words in the book and asked my parents what some of the words meant, and lo and behold, I was one of the best readers in pre-school. Edit: btw, if your child hates normal picture books and finds them boring, consider comic books instead. Seriously. All my cousins told me that they hated reading, but they learned to read from those old Archie comics.

yeah, fine, so long as they are really interested and don't disturb the game.

Nah...treat chess just like u would reading and simple math. It's that important. Critical thinking, calculation and pattern recognition skills greatly improve. Just make it super FUN! Hell Armenia requires it in their schools nationwide. The kids in Armenia view chess as the school's coolest subject. In America, kids somehow learn that chess is a negative uncool thing.

It's easier for kids to play something they're accustomed to (i.e. just knowing what chess pieces look like) versus forcing a regiment for what amounts to a hobby for most.

I was trying to figure out the best way to teach my 6-year old chess. I hadn't considered directly inserting the pieces into her head. Brilliant! I'll let you know how it goes. :) But I totally agree that the worst thing to do is pressure them on anything. I remember a guy at our club dragged his two children to the club for years. Poor kids. What I'd much rather see is kids dragging their parents to the club!

The sort of "puzzles" in lichess's "learn chess basics" are a very age appropriate way to teach how the pieces move. Questions like "which piece can the queen take?" or "can you take all the pieces?" make for a fun game on their own.

My GF has a 9 year old who wants to play chess whenever he sees the set or I play a game or two with her. The problem is he starts to change the rules, trying to capture pieces when there's another piece in the way or suddenly a rook can move in diagonals. He's like that with a lot of games, if he's not winning he changes the game so he's winning. Eg in football he will start calling fouls if your feet touches his while seizing the ball so he can take penalties. Parents never really bothered raising him, he's a sore loser and still cries if he doesn't get his way.

I taught my younger brother (3.5yo) the names of the pieces. He recognised them even when I bought a new set. He can also watch Magnus and Nepo play, recognise them (I taught him only Magnus and Nepo) and tell me if they made a move or captured. I think to myself when should I teach him the rules? How much time I should spend with him and chess? Currently, I have almost no time to be with him, and I can't let him watch the GothamChess video about the rules of chess (he doesn't know English)

There is no value to learning chess if you are not interested in the fairly niche and not all that useful process of learning chess. If I were a parent I would have zero interest in introducing my kids to chess. There are so many other things to focus on and so many other games or hobbies someone could take up and master if they want to. I am certain I am not just speaking for myself when I say that I use chess as an escape. I would hope my kid is mentally healthy enough to need to escape from life very little, and when they do, they are better arbiters of what escape they need than I am.
