How to Tell a Box Turtles Age and Gender

I happened to find a pair of Eastern Box Turtles while I was out hiking in the woods. I took the opportunity to show how to tell male and female box turtles apart as well as how to tell the age of a box turtle by counting the scute rings. This method of determining the age of a box turtle isn't exact but it can give you some sort of an idea as to how old the turtle may be.
When trying to determine the gender of a box turtle look at both the eye color and the underside of the shell. Females usually have a brown colored eye but I have seen females with red eyes as well. The underside of the shell will have a concave portion on male box turtles where the females will generally have a much flatter bottom.

I have a male eastern box turtle. I rescued him from a lady that found him in North Carolina and brought him home to Ohio and put him in a small aquarium with some cat litter. I can't release him.. so I'm just giving him the best life I can. I wanted to see how old he is so thank you!

7/11. Those are a horrible way to keep a turtle. You must immediately remove the turtle to a natural area of grass and shelter. The food is essential for this time of the year as it will need to keep its body fat for sleeps for winter. I urge you to immediately have a small area of water too and NOT kitty litter. Go to a college or some places that can tell you how to keep it if you are. This is urgent for you to learn a lot about the turtle!

@@allclades one for 7 and the other for 6 years. One went through the mower and other may have but both are doing great.

That's awesome, I have one that visits my in-laws yard that was hit by a mower several years ago. He has a big gash in his she'll but it's completely healed up and he seems to be doing fine.

The deformity is likely from having metabolic bone disease at some point in their life. For example if there was a year where their natural source of calcium wasn’t readily available.

Typically they live 25-35 years but can also live up to 100 years if taken care of.

From that I understand they are still turtles, they're just pond turtles as opposed to sea turtles. They are very tortoise like in nature but they aren't tortoises.

They are land turtles vs pond turtles. The need water for drink and getting into but they are not aquatic. People should really look up all this as it seems,as I read this, that poor turtles picked up and moved around are doomed to die. Which is a good part of the reason turtles are declining!!

This is heartbreaking to hear. I have raised turtles for decades. o OF COURSE THEY NEEDTOEAT! If possible put them back to where you got them (that's exactly where!). They live there lives in one lifelong area of football size. If you cannot do this, you have to sequest them yourself or find a rescue place who knows what they're doing. Food, sanctuary, many habits need to be adhered to or you

Lol I didn't keep it. In all honesty most tlet stores sell tortoises that do much better in captivity than Eastern Box Turtles, look into russian tortoises or pancake tortoises.
