The Pakistan Experience

Күн бұрын

1947 and 1971 are the two most pivotal moments in Pakistan's history yet they remain largely unknown. What we know about them depends on what the state wants us to know; your perception of events will be clouded by what side of the border you were born in.
The most important aspect of the story is often left untold by the state narratives: the people, the lived experiences of millions. The recording of oral histories sheds light on those experiences. Through a peoples history you can piece together the experience of 1947 and 1971.
Anam Zakaria comes on the podcast this week to discuss how to tell a peoples history, and why it is important.
Was Bangladesh inevitable? How do state narratives differ in India and Pakistan? Should an author put themselves into the work? Is there such a thing as 'objective history'? How to deal with trauma memories?
Find out this and more on this week's episode of The Pakistan Experience.
Anam Zakaria is the author of three books - 1971: A People's History from Bangladesh, Pakistan and India (2019), Between the Great Divide: A Journey into Pakistan-administered Kashmir (2018);
and The Footprints of Partition: Narratives of Four Generations of Pakistanis and Indians (2015), which won her the 2017 KLF-German Peace Prize.

Not even once, they discussed Kashmiri pundits exodus from Kashmir. Eliminating minorities from Pakistan and Bangladesh. Because it leads to discussion related to Muslim fanatism in the region. Why Pakistan still cannot come out of violence and become prosperous. Why Muslims in India are falling behind on every aspect after 1947. All other minorities in India are flourishing. Bangladesh is moving ahead only because till today religion has not been allowed to overpower everything else.

It really amazes me how people in Pakistan casually compare lynching in India to blasphemy in Pakistan. Its nowhere near to the number of blasphemy cases in Pakistan. I don't totally deny that lynching don't take place but most of the times the perpetrators are punished unlike institutionalised blasphemy laws. If someone could shed some light on this. At 43:18 - the host just paints the Indians with one common brush where they all are feeling about a break of a (two) limb, however, being Indian I can definitely vouch for many of my kind of people who would feel that it was the only good thing that happened. I am aghast at the state of affairs in Pakistan where, it is not even possible to criticise without equally criticising the foe across the border. The minute they learn to do an objective introspection, there might be any hopes of getting better as a community.

as she said at 55.00 when Pakistan broke into 2 parts in 1971 they try to replace history with religion in order to create an identity, but in the case of India when India broke into parts India didn't need to create history, it was there naturally all they to do is revive it. and because of that idea of a unified India is also get revived because for Pakistan it was created but for India its separation of India into pieces. the idea of a united India for me is that there is a natural order of things and if conditions are created in favor then some countries might like to join the union of India like past but by choice not by force and timeline for is not a constraint here.

Dear Harsh, India was never one country. Various different nations inhabit India at the same time. India was made one by East India Company for administration purposes. To Indira Gandhi's credit she waited bided her time did the ground work and let the Army Navy & Air Force who normally worked in silos carry out combined operations and wrap things up in less than 15 days. With a large portion of the workshare and ambushes done by Mukti Bahini forces before war broke out(officially).

1971 did not occur in a vacuum. It was the logical outcome of the trends, which were operational for at least a few decades, and no attempt was made to address the fundamental issues, one of the main being the economic exploitation by the West of the East. The initial Bengali attempts were to get their due share in the country's decision-making process. It later evolved into Bengali nationalism and moved from greater autonomy to finally into the struggle for complete independence. Every ill-thought step taken by the central government from banning the poetry of legendary Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore on national media to administrative and economic measures radicalized the Bengali population one step further. Even fifty years later, with all the hindsight, Pakistan is unable to comprehend the root causes of Bengali alienation. Please interview Profs. Pervez Hoodbhoy and Taimur Rehman for a more balanced view of why the Bengalees felt it was time to go separate ways. Yes, India helped for their own political/financial gains, but Bangladeshis were no longer interested to be second-class citizens in their own country and hence accepted India's help. How about an in-depth discussion on the economic exploitation by the West of the East? Here's an article by Prof. Hoodhboy on Dawn: www.dawn.com/news/1462757

Good talk. My own family has a partition story and I find the whole thing really weird. Neither government cares about the partition survivors. Their stories were never documented. Only in recent years especially with KZfaq have those stories been documented. After watching tens of partition videos of Saraiki Hindus settled mostly in Haryana, I was left with 1 quote by an old man - "Partition was such a blunder. Earlier the kings used to change and people went on with their lives. In partition, the kings changed and the people had to change." It's also good time to talk about this as in 20 years there will be no alive who would have seen or heard of anything during the partition.

This is brilliant Shehzad.Keep doing great work bro. Watching from Rajasthan, India. I learnt in my school textbooks very little about partition. Your podcasts are like PhDs about subcontinent partition and different takes on it. It broadens our horizons and liberates us from viewing this worst tragedy of mankind from narrow boundaries of our state narrative and makes us more humane. I read Dr. Khuswant singhs "The train to Pakistan". Very beautiful books that narrates actual situations at the ground level during partition days. How common people living are affected by this news. How people became blood thirsty of their neighbors. And also brave hearts who supported people so that they can hide safely from riot crowds. Very heart wrenching novel. Must read. At the end you will figure out that both sides fanatic peoples killed, raped, massacred, looted other side peoples. Both side good people were also there. For the benefits of few power hungry men entire subcontinent was divided in the name of religion. Very unfortunate. Hope that day comes soon when we will roam freely from Delhi to Lahore. Karachi to Mumbai.Border becomes irrelevant. Nothing is impossible. May be One day its possible by mutual agreement.

@@omeirahmedkhan6155 As an India I cant imagine current pakistan part of india. We are lucky that the problem rich/elit muslims left. They would have caused same problems you are seeing now. Bangalis learned the lessen hard way so they know now what right and whats wrong upto some extent. So yes partition was required but it would not have been required if Jinah had not have started the unnecessary religious split.

Partition was very much necessary at least for India.Yeah the way it happened was unnecessary, lots of killings and destruction.Partition was unavoidable because Muslims were always highly radicalized. Partition helped India 🇮🇳 maintain its peaceful growth. It helped India in extracting its bad elements.

Incomplete partition (without total exchange of population as suggested by Ambedkar n Sardar Patel) is actually a long term disaster for India. We have muslim population increased from 35 million to 200 million + now, almost equivalent to no of muslims in Pakistan few years ago. And it is increasing. A sizable part of it is becoming radical (as we have seen recently in beheadings of Hindus by them in Udaipur and other places) it will have consequences for unity of India.

Great discussion. However, you guys downplayed India's greatest strength which is diversity. How to be Indian and Punjabi, and Gujariati, and Kashmiri etc. has been successful in India. In Pakistan, by nature the country was formed for the benefit of one particular theology and they are still struggling to create a man-made ethnicity called Pakistani.

49:00, I wonder how they think about all their Muslim brothers they left back in India. Those brothers who were the most marginalized politically. They were left with nothing (in terms of politics). The idea of Pakistan was to protect them from Hindu yoke, not be made a bakra ! Edit Good point at 51:00.

We have more influence in my country than you in Pakistan come and see. Bakra is true to those who sympathise with Kashmiri separatists. Compare India and Pakistan on everything, especially minorities like Muslims. What is happening in my country to Muslims is because of ourselves because our religion is incompatible with modernity and its rigidness otherwise 🇮🇳 is Paradise. We would choose to serve our soil over our parents and our religion. That's what makes us proud and patriotic Indians. Live and let live.

It needs to be thought over why Yahya and his Junta were not brought to the book. Bhutto may have procrastinated any indictment / trial for reasons known best to him but Zia could have done it. All perpetrators including Yahya and Niazi were alive. No much known, Yahya requested the Hamood ur Rahman Commission to try him openly.

How can we find hope in any of this?

Even though the podcast was informative and refreshing there is always a bias towards India..that India is always there to get you. Please understand the refugees crisis was a real thing back then because of which india had to eventually get involved. Watch interviews of that times. And This thing still persists in the present day as well where we have areas in Mumbai which are called Bangladesh because of the illegal immigrant population.
