HOW TO TELL APART THE JUMPS IN FIGURE SKATING

I get a lot of comments saying that all the jumps in figure skating look the same...and that's true if you don't know what to look for.
This video explains how you can recognize the different types of jumps in skating: what to look for, how the jump is performed, and lots of examples!
Don't be discouraged if they still all look the same even after watching the video, it takes some practice before you can correctly identify the jumps in real time.

Newb here! Why are so many jumps "only for men", only "attempted by men" or, only used in women's skating under specific circumstances? Is it because of rules, it makes more sense point-wise, or are women's bodies just not made for it?

I have seen so many videos not caring to explain what is an 'outside/inside edge', 'toe pick' and just throwing common expressions like "right back outside edge" etc as a given. They probably don't realize that even this is very confusing to complete newbies. I really command you for including that bit since It's essential and so many videomakers brush through it and if the viewer isn't able to understand that then the rest falls flat. The video is very clear and take things slow showing first the mechanics of the jumps in slow motion with pointers and only then the videos in real time speed. Possibly the best one on this topic to show complete newbies. You're a jewel! Keep going with the channel!

He didn’t land it but he’s still the first person to every get it and it wasn’t marked down as a 3a.

The best way to enjoy figure skating is understanding the jumps, the most difficult part ofevery program. I've seen so many videos describing them, I am still confused when trying to identify the jumps in areal time routine. Thank you for this video. The best. You are a great teacher!!!

Thank you!! I learned a lot, being an amateur figure skating enthusiast, I found the video very helpful. I always thought a skater fell out of their jump when doing a “Euler”, didn’t know it was actually a jump!

I just want to say that this is an incredibly clear and effective video. I would have liked more A vs B comparisons to see the differences in action but it was an amazingly informative video and I'm very grateful. I can see the passion and care that went into it. 11/10 video

Nice educational video. I can recognize the differences between a flip and a lutz, but not a flip and a toe sometimes. Or I still don't fully understand a flip. I need to rewatch that part again. And thanks for using a variety of skaters! It's interesting to see.

Thank you for the clear-cut explanation. I’ve never actually heard or seen anybody explain it quite this clearly. My grandmother and grandfather used to love watching figure skating together, but I never got into it because I couldn’t understand it. This video makes it easier. I can now talk figure skating with grandma. Thank you, you are my hero. I love my grandma to pieces and want to be able to talk figure skating with her because it’s one of her favorite things to talk about besides gardening. You have officially made hero status in my book for making this video.

Man, if only my coach from 1976 could’ve explained edges and the leg positions as well as you. I probably would’ve skated a lot longer. ( not really, I grew from 5ft2in to 5ft7in in less than a year) This is a terrific video!!! 😀😀😀

A nice comprehensive video. This is the video I must show to my parents so they can finally tell the difference between flip and lutz. Even after 8 years they still don't see the difference. I still would've wished to see more in-depth comparisons of: - the old Salchow and the new. - Loop's free leg. Some people keep it in the outside edge while others tend to keep it on the inside edge. - Axel hands. While usually skaters swing them from down to up some skaters do it sideways. So they stretch their hands up to their sides and when they're about to jump they pull them together.

I absolutely enjoyed this video and your explanations! I loved how even terminologies of the mechanics were explained, and it really made me appreciate more the complexities of these jumps. The fact there is multiple ways to attempt a jump, some pretty difficult upon further inspection is incredible! No wonder certain jumps is rarely tried.

Thank you for making this video. I have even more respect for now. This is like watching what not to do to get an ankle injury 101. I can absolutely see how someone could overthink these jumps, which can be dangerous. It can cause too much hesitation, resulting in injury. This is so technical. Bravo to you, video maker!
