I have used small pebbles transferred from one pocket to another in the same manner. Small pieces of twigs would also work. Good method to track your travels.

in the army we started out with the left and if dont carry a pack count if u carry a pack do it again count on flat and up grade and down grade and then add up and devide by 3 to get average

As a former Army Airborne Ranger, the 60s, we did a similar technique. We would use rocks, moving them from one pocket to another. These Ranger Beads are a nice technique.

If you use a bic lighter to melt the ends, use the butt of the lighter to press them. No more burned fingers!

a couple of things; when adding beads to a cord or string, I always utilize a piece of floral wire [from any craft store or walmart] cut the length of wire, bend it in half and use it the way you would use a sewing needle, 'thread' the cord through the loop in the wire, and then the beads easily slip onto the cord. Since I can no longer walk very far [I used to walk ten miles a day] now that I am disabled, I struggle to walk all the way to the mailbox, it is half a block or so away. Anyway, I count my prayers as I walk, so I never walk alone

Love your videos. One thing I'd suggest - if you want someone to sit to the end of a 20 minute video - it would be a good idea to explain how they are used first, at least a brief over-view. That way, I'll know if I want to spend the time to learn about it.

Sometimes it is better to take more than one count of paces. Say, three times, then average the number you get. This will give a more accurate assessment of the distance traveled.

Very good diy. Thanks for showing. The only thing I would recommend is to do everything in your power to never take the guts out of the paracord. That defeats the purpose of using paracord in the first place. Obviously I understand why you did it, but it can be done without doing that. Maybe put a little olive oil or vaseline on it to help push the beads on, and then wash the oil off after you have completed the task. The only time you should be gutting paracord is in an emergency for survival uses. It's not the end of the world, but I try everything in my power to keep paracord in it's original state otherwise you might as well use a smaller cordage. Excellent how to tutorial. God bless!🙂

This is definitely of use for land nav and as a rainy day project for the little ones. I work in public safety for a hospital and recently find myself on odd shifts with few people in my building, I have been trying to soak up as much knowledge as you are willing to give me through your videos. It is all great stuff and I am humbled by what you seem to take for granted but I would not have known existed were it not for your pointing it out. I can't hit the like button as many times as I wish I could for all of your videos. My five year old daughter and I made hard tack a few days ago and she had a lot of fun with it. We will be trying this once my 550 cord comes in from Amazon.

You may want to also measure your count in the woods if you have that option, your strides wont be as long and your count will be quite differeent.

Good topic. Your 100M pace count changes with fatigue, terrain, day/night, and load. Using a GPS device to work your numbers on various surfaces (hills, rocky, turf, and pavement) and then with a pack while fresh and again while fatigued provides a better average and modifies your initial first guess on flat ground. We all slow down as the day gets long. The advantage of hiker style GPS is that you can do your pace counting on recreational hikes so when you are without it or batteries fail the ranger beads and compass saves the day. Hiking in the Pacific Northwest on the Wonderland Trail around Mt. Rainier tamed my impression of my own pace. With full pack on broken Basalt rock and high country trail my "pace" was about one mile an hour with frequent rest stops.

Thank you for this helpful video! I decided to count my steps in fractions of a mile. I have a long stride, so I have about 104 steps to each 10th of a mile. Therefore I can count up to 5 miles with my ranger beads! God bless you!

One caution about using the hard plastic beads. I've made several sets of pace count beads using them and they have a tendency to break in half and you lose a bead. Maybe the beads I purchased were not as good quality as others. Not pushing the beads tightly against each other, especially when stored in a pocket or bag, seems to reduce how frequently they break. ( my theory is they may be breaking when they are tight together and the cord becomes pulled into a circular shape when stored or maybe they break if they hit against something hard). So , keep one of the thin inner cords & a few extra beads to replace beads that become lost. As an alternate choice of beads I've looked for wood beads. They have been more durable. But I've not yet found any that fit onto doubled paracord. But I've found wood beads that work well on the right size shoe string. Depending on the size of the wood bead some fit well on a braided shoe string, another size bead worked well on a leather shoe string. When making them this way the shoe strings aren't doubled as done with the paracord. It's just a single shoe string with knots at the appropriate length. The length of your pace is more accurate if measured over a longer distance, 500m or 500 yards. It kind of cancels out over enthusiastic pace length over a shorter distance. I know my pace count for 1/10 km & 1/10 mile. Yeah, I'm familiar with metric but I still mostly think in imperial lengths. And the mile is based on 1000 paces of the Roman legions. ( so i kind of prefer imperial lengths, they're based on the size of a human being, the metric length his based on the size of the earth, from equator to North Pole ) 5 km is just slightly longer than 3 miles, not quite the length of two football fields longer. So if you count miles, the same beads will let you count an extra 2 miles walking distance.

If you want to stop cordage from fraying without burning your hands, use liquid super glue instead. It forms a good hard tip like a shoelace.

You mentioned an Aloe Vera drink in your video on Laundry Soap. Could you do a video on how you make it and the benefits of it. I recently started taking Moringa Powder, but also have a large tub of aloe vera I use with essential oils.

For those without access to a pre-measured track, just get a tape measure and measure out 30ft/10 yards. Then, count your paces over 10 "laps". You then find the average for each "lap"; the average of the laps, times 10, is your current pace. Note that this is not as useful as having a full 100-yard track, and requires a bit more work, but if you live in an urban environment, it's usually easier to do out of sight of curious eyes.

We used to pull them down instead of pushing them up.

I enjoyed your video. I'd like to make a couple of hopefully helpful suggestions if I may: #1. One way of reminding yourself of your number of paces is to code the number into the beadwork it's self. Take your number for example. Make the first 7 of your 9 beads a different color, shape, or texture. Then do the same with the first 2 of your 4 beads... 72. #2. Another option would be to find beads that have numbers molded on them like the ones meant for making identity jewelry. #3. You CAN use your fingers to make a smooth end on your cord when you melt it. Just make sure to wet your fingers with water first. This trick also works to smooth down hot glue, I've been using this trick for decades.

Dress it up and add a crucifix...make a single decade rosary or a pace counter!

Great project. I make Ranger Beads often. However I don't git the cord. You may need those lines in the field some day. Its not hard to pull non-gutted 550 cord through pony beads. Also I pull my beads down not up. As always I enjoy your videos. Thank you.

You can make a much better knot by holding the string to a stick, winding the string three times loosely over string and stick, and then tucking the end of your string back through the loops. This will give you a knot you can pull tight right against your beads.

maybe i missed it - but what's the inner diameter/the hole of the beads? i want to make sure they don't slide around.

You could lightly heat those white thread ends into a hard “needle” and make it easier to thread the beads on. Also, breathing those fumes in of melted plastic is extremely carcinogenic. Must do this outside, or near open windows. Do not let children breathe the fumes in!
