Another good video cameron. Two fig tree hacks for you. First. I grow a 20ft tall 45 year old black mission tree. Learning from pruning mistakes has taught me that if you prune off lower branches and send the energy to the upper branches the figs will instantly, even the current ones growing, will double in size. My figs are bigger than tennis balls and it's because I always prune lower growth off. If I leave lower growth on for the season all of the figs produced are apricot sized. Secondly. The ideal time to harvest a black mission fig is in a three day window. The figs will actually split the outter skin from top to bottom, without actually opening up into the flesh. Once you see the skin cracks take your strainer and get all of them. Figs will do this for about a month for harvesting. You can go out to your garden and harvest for a whole month. i'm kinda a fig crazy, i have about 40 different varieties in my collection (about 20 of them are only cuttings i've rooting this winter [it's still winter here in australia]) i personally love to eat them fresh... and mum makes the rest of them into a fig jam. just a quick note on how to know figs are ripe... the fruit ripens from its bottom near the eye upwards to the neck and the stem that is attached to the tree... so you can always check around the neck/stem and if it feels soft, you can pick the fig. another thing, some figs produce fruit on last year's growth, aka breba crop, it's usually larger and less tasty but it's very good for people in the cooler climates to enjoy some figs.... the rest of us like you and me can easily prune heavily and enjoy the main crop that ripens on the new growth 😋

I love figs❤️ I have Kadota, Black Mission, Turkish, Black Jack, Desert King, Brown Turkey😊 I eat them fresh, sometimes I make jelly, when they are small and green it makes very good jelly 😋

Dried and make fruit and nut salami. Just made 3 batches of preserves also. Fig and strawberry and 2 batches of bourbon fig. Also they are good on flatbread with prosciutto and arugula. Grilled is good also finished with a touch of balsamic vinegar. SOOOO yummy. Endless possibilities.

I put a net on my fig tree so the birds and beetles have a harder time to get to the figs, it works pretty good. My panache fig didn't give me any figs this year, last year i got 6. My brown turkey fig is giving a lot. I give figs to my chickens

Thanks for great video. I would love to receive cuttings from your trees so I could grow them in my backyard. I had fig trees when I Lived I’m NY but never got a fig. I now live in SC and couldn’t take my tree with me. I took a cutting that grew but I don’t know the type it is. It is a free gig type. Bbq is awesome n brings out the flavor. I know people cook them to make a syrup. I never had a fig grow on new growth. I would love to receive a free fig when you prune your trees.

I have never seen anyone eating just the red flash inside the fig :DDD. It's like you would eat flowers, but you would only eat the middle part and you would throw away the petals. I'm giving this comparison, because figs are actually flowers. It's so funny :D. Like why would anyone not eat the skin? I think everything is for the first time. You are my first time, sir.

Raw is tastiest! I froze them and use them for smoothies. I tried dried figs they are good when you go on a hike.

You cant just have a few varities. With figs you will need a whole orchard. I have i-258, Figo preto, black Zadar, smith, golden rainbow, Kathleen's black, ronde de Bordeaux, Osborne prolific, Celeste, brown turkey, Chicago Hardy, desert king, and surge unk. My wife loves to make jam and we eat it with Brie and crackers. It's amazing and addicting. You need to try it! I would also definitely recommend getting a black Madeira since you have a long season in Cali

My aunts previous house in a suburb of Phoenix, had 2 fig trees. 2 different varities because the fruit was different colors, but i dont know which. She was a small business owner who did not have time or know how to care for these trees at all (zero pruning, zero watering - ZERO WATERING -IN PHOENIX AREA! etc...) and they looked amazing, had great shade and always had delicious fruit on them when I was out visiting in the summer. Ever since, I have wanted a fig. Great shade in the desert - a plus, delicious snacks - a plus and do ok left alone if you have a rough year- a plus, just to name a few. Plus, I have looked into it and I believe their leaves are edible and used in some Mediterranean cuisine, but are definitely edible for my livestock, which is also a plus - free goat treats! I have 3 figs as of last year. 2 are already starting fruit! I hope they are as good as I remember!

I am in SC, I cook them- goats cheese and prosciutto then grill under broiler to melt the cheese a bit. Great appetizer- do you swap cuttings? I received mission fig, and staymen. I also have green an be kadota. I would love to have more cuttings and share what I have. No one here brought any fig cuttings from their sold homes.

I'm got an LSU Purple fig tree as well as an unknown one (possibly Celeste or Brown Turkey) that came from someone else's fig tree as a branch that had rooted into the ground which then got destroyed when we had our septic field replaced but I had taken a cutting from it and planted that this year and it's doing well so maybe I'll have some figs next year. I think I actually prefer them dried. They're good as a jam as well.

Your panache fig looks like it has a vertical growth habit rather than a spreading habit. So many yummy figs. Why are they not easily available for tasting :(
