There's also the bend test, although people are always scared to do it these days. In the old days it was a sure give away. Fakes would crease, while real cards don't crease from bending in half - they just pringle and you can bend the opposite way to mostly "fix" it. Of course, back then sleeves weren't even a thing yet Nowadays I perform a green dot test, and check the rosette patterns

You mean that the Ur Dragon card with the Dragonite art that I bought is fake? Hm... damn... You used to be able to see the difference in the darker colours of the fake cards, but Wizards has dropped the quality so much, that in some sets, different regions have different colour tints on the same card (War of the Spark comes to mind). Another test that mtg judges told me about was the bending test. Supposedly, if you bend a real mtg card until the top touches the bottom, the card should have no damage on the fold. Fake cards should show signs of breaking. Again though, with the quality drop I'm not sure that real cards are sturdier than proxies anymore.

Something important to note regarding the waxiness/shininess of a card!!!: There are two core factory locations. The one in Japan makes the cards a lot smoother and slightly shinier than the others! This tripped me up hard, as I had some cards (and a box) that I thought might be fake because of this! The shininess also caused the light to not shine through as much. I brought the cards to multiple stores and was told they were real

@@zannothefox I've ordered a ton of current proxies from different sources, none of them pass the light test. I really think it's should be one of the first lines of defense, not your only tool, but it rules out most fakes right off the bat and is easy to perform without extra gizmos.

@@poultrylord7300 I have opened several Kaldheim Boosters and the ones from the Fat Packs have a really dark core (almost black) the ones from the Draft Display are like normal blue cores. 15:04 I believe the pattern the color dots are arranged in the brown is also quite different from an original card, looking for these kind of pattern differences can be a tell as well. However I have to say as someone who never saw a real fake card it was very interesting to see how good many of these are. When I proxy cards for my EDH decks I usually just print it on a relatively thin paper and slide it over some draft chaff. If I choose a good printing quality even that passes a quick glance in sleeves which makes it very convenient for playing since I think it's important to quickly recognize cards from across the table, proxy or not.

I'm still curious--at what point does the distinction between the 'real' thing and a simulacrum matter? The functionality is identical, so the the problem becomes one of publisher authenticity.
@varsoonhks3211
@varsoonhks3211 Жыл бұрын
@WhenTheChipsAreDown I largely agree but to play devil's advocate here 1. Why do we put higher value on the printing done by WotC over whoever did the faked one, though? If you're willing to spend whatever amount of $$$ on a functional play piece, so long as it retains the function identically, is the 'authenticity' of the piece really worth the cost? I do think it is ethically foul to sell someone something and lie about its nature--I'm interested less about being lied to and more about the value of the thing itself, though. 2. If there is no physical difference between a fake and a WotC manufactured card, how can tournaments discriminate between 'fake decks and 'real' ones? What won you the tournament was your play and deck build, all of which can be executed regardless of print authenticity, right? As this channel touched on in the previous scammed video, those fake cards very likely saw play in many tournaments. Should the hobby really be pay-gated in the secondary market? I enjoy busting packs as much as anyone but if I could play a booster draft without having to pay any money and just give away/throw away the cards afterwards I would play a lot more Magic.

Real cards are printed with an offset printer which first inks the cyan, yellow and magenta in a rosette pattern which approximates all the colors when viewed at a normal distance. The final pass is black. The black borderlines and text will be nice and sharp because no rosette pattern is neccessary on areas that simply need to be pure black. Sharp text doesn't neccessarily guarantee it's real. But fuzzy text/borderlines are a sure sign it's fake.

I knew the right Liliana was real because of it's set symbol being just a smidge dark in tone

light tests are now worthless. shine and feel are also largely worthless if the scammer knows what they are doing. a few passes of a magic eraser over chinese counterfeits will make the card feel identical to a real card. there is only 1 way to truly tell if a card is real or fake every time and its the green dot. because of this there is no reason to advertise or tell people to do anything other than go straight to the green dot test..

Interesting that you chose Liliana for this video. I ordered one from TCG player before prices came down and it just doesn't feel right. About a week later, I picked up another from my LGS which felt similar, but not exactly the same. Light test was inconclusive. Ordering a loupe from Amazon now to check that green dot.

I have a few cards that are about... I wanna say a little under or over a sixteenth inch taller than most of my other cards. Could that be an indication that they're fakes?

Something from experience. Fakes cards will either be easier or harder to tear than a normal magic card. Only a few cards were harmed in this learning.

Sometimes it is insanely hard to tell, i have a couple fakes that were bleached cards (so the back of the card is real) that were then printed over. Almost impossible to tell that they are fake. I have these cards in decks where I don't want the real card there, like my mana crypt or my jeweled lotus, got them off of a dude who makes these cards for people. I have marked these cards though so that I don't ever accidently sell them if i dump my collection.

How do you tell a fake card from a misprint

The left Lili is fake. The card is noticably lighter particularly around the print symbol, og Lili of the veil was a fairly dark card.
