The way I learned to detect silver coins was during my few years working in the cafeteria at an elementary school. Kids would come through with their lunch money and you get used to the sounds the coins made as you drop them because you literally do this for hours a day and for over a thousand times per day. It doesn't take long at all to detect the sounds of coins hitting differently than "normal". Anytime I heard coins drop in my drawer that sounded different i would immediately pull them back out and put them to the side and replace them with coins out of my own purse. As long as the money count was accurate the cafeteria manager didn't care. There is no telling how many times I got silver dollars from children who's parents mistook them for quarters and rare coins. The pay sucked, loved the children but it was like treasure hunting every day at work!!!!

are silver items usually really heavy ? . i bought a large plate today which was the dull colour of silver , it had scratches anddents all over it . it was soooo worn and abused that i couldnt see any hall mark or writing of any kind.and there was no rust so i know it wasnt steel . and its too dull for stainless steel . but its really heavyi tried to do a chemical test on it but i only have some watered down nitric acid . i put some on the plate in a place where i filed deep into it and no reaction , no colour change , nothing.....im certain that its actually heavier than a plat made of steel...........do you think it could be silver ?

What do you think about the case of a solid metal that looks like silver, does not magnetize, and has a tarnish layer on its surface, and the color of the acid test turns to grey? Note that I use a transparent, colorless checking acid, not brown like the one you have.

0:24 🔍 Various methods exist to test silver authenticity, from chemical tests to simple observations. 1:11 🧪 The acid test, using nitric acid solutions, is the most accurate method for testing silver purity. 1:56 🛠 To conduct the acid test, file down a section of the item to expose the base metal, then apply acid drops. 2:27 🚫 Look for color changes when using the acid test: red indicates silver, while blue or green suggests another metal. 3:06 🔍 Alternative tests include checking for stamps indicating purity, assessing magnetic properties, and conducting the ice test. 4:42 ❄ Silver's high thermal conductivity causes ice to melt quickly when placed on it, distinguishing it from other metals. 5:43 🔬 The bleach test can also indicate silver due to its rapid tarnishing, but it's not foolproof, especially for silver-plated items. 6:13 🧪 While chemical tests like the acid test are most reliable, other methods like the ring test and bleach test can provide initial indications of silver authenticity.

What if it's gold plated but it days .999 fine silver on it. Do you scape past the gold and test the silver. Some might not agree of that being the smartest thing but how would you find put if the silver under it is real? The gold in my case os starting to tarnish as of it was silver. I've tried the magnetic test and there is no copper in this particular item. Will the acid work for all metals? What I mean will it turn green not matter what the silver lay over?

saeedur rahman Are you asking what the point is for determining it being sterling or not? .... Are you familiar with the entire point of this channel? Or any other ‘scrapping’ channel for that matter.... Sure, the reason flatware exists is to serve the purpose of some cultures, human’s eating utensils. But that’s not the ONLY thing they are ever meant to bear practicality to. People buy & sell & resale. And in order to determine the potential value of the item, finding out if it’s sterling (high value due to just under pure silver content), or silver plated (hardly any pure silver content - basically worthless to those melting the item to purify the contents into investment value silver stock) - Or to sell as the collector value per a set of dishware or other. So if you ever come across a box of random forks & knives that look to be older. You wouldn’t just take home, run it thru dishwasher, and add it to your kitchen drawer.....(I hope not at least) You’d determine its content, get a value & make money. That’s all not to mention, not all silverware is for eating with. As it’s not safe to do so. Much of the flatware that your grandparents have, that they got from their parents/grandparents - was for display/decor & would essentially make you sick eventually killing you after continuous use due to its toxicity potential.

Hi, this might be a dumb question but isn't there a law that if something is silver it needs to be marked?
@moosescrapper5928
@moosescrapper5928 7 жыл бұрын
Not sure if its a law, but also many silver items are very very old. You are right though, most silver will be marked, however, many marks are very small and can wear away over time

No. However if it is marked then it must assay at what it is marked.

Most will be marked but not all. Beware of dealers trying to rip you off. I think it's illegal to mark silver as silver if it's not, although there are still forgeries, but it doesn't have to be marked

Your silver acid is nearly expired buddy. If its dark brown and closer to translucent its nearly expired vs reddish brown and transparent fresh silver test acid. Fresh acid would have given you a much more obvious result. Ring test really only works on coins and bars and large plates etc. can also work on fork tines (think tuning fork), I would never dream of attempting a ring test on a knife handle though because they are filled with plaster/epoxy and will not give results. Best way to practice ring test is a 90% Morgan/peace dollar vs a copper core Eisenhower dollar and an American eagle or other 999 silver round. I will take a known non silver coin and balance it on my ring finger like a symbol, then take a silver coin (or believed to be silver) and balance it on my index finger of the same hand, then I'll take a pen or other striking device and ring it like a drum cymbal, by balancing both at once you can ring them in quick succession and see if they produce similar tone or not.. You don't have to have perfect pitch to recognize it either, I have no real musical affinity and I find it pretty obvious. Good luck buying silver all. Don't buy unmarked silverware, and hollowware its basically always plated. Just looking for that 925, 925/1000, ster or sterling. honestly not much else I'd trust. The silver platters that are heavy tend to be plated, the real ones tend to be pretty flimsy in comparison to the fake. This is obviously an attempt to save metal when constructing/keep costs down.
