How can you tell that your mushrooms are ready to fruit? Is it time to cut a hole in the substrate myco bag and start fresh air exchange (FAE)? It can sometimes be difficult to tell when mycelium has fully colonized a bulk subtrate and is ready to start fruiting and produce edible mushrooms! Thes golden oysters were grown via liquid culture, grown on millet grain that was sterilized in an Instant Pot. The bulk substrate of straw was also pasteurized in an Instant Pot. And in today's video we will decide what to look for red flags and signs that you are ready to fruit.

Usually when it doesn’t colonize certain spots while aggressively colonizes other areas like this; it’s because it is contaminated and it is running away from that contamination. There’s lots of metabolites in that bag. Very likely bacterial contamination and those brainy blobs were likely overlay caused by the fungus Mycogone Sp.
@ClownWhisper
@ClownWhisper Жыл бұрын
That is not necessarily so if there is a bear spot and it just stays bare then it's not contaminated contamination will always grow something weather it's trichoderma or something even more insidious it will discolor at the very least. The reason why this guy's got these gigantic bear spots because he doesn't know what he's doing. He's one of these people that start a hobby immediately go to KZfaq and create a video not knowing what he's doing. I hate to be harsh but it's true look at how he's got his bag completely taped down there's absolutely no filtered air going into that bag that's why there's bare spots because that mycelium is choking it's only growing using the air that was available when the bag was put together. If he had that bag set up like you're supposed to puffed up with the filter patch open expose with nothing blocking it I'm sure that bag would be completely colonized

@punkyroo

You should need to water it if the substrate was the proper level of moisture. But if you need to up the humidity, Use a fine misting spray and spray into the bag, but not directly on the substrate.

Excellent video! Thank you. Quick question: Can you fruit a block that isn't fully colonized, if the bottom layer is already popcorning? I predict that would affect initial yield, but with the benefit of an earlier harvest. I'm new to this!
@professored7169
@professored7169 3 жыл бұрын
Ya but you can introduce contams to the uncolonized area, that's why people wait for it to fully colonize is because the mycelium will block contams from the substrate, I'm not sure if will affect future flushes tho, some people will flip the block and cut a new hole to get a second flush if growing from the bag, but if you s2b then you can pick off the uncolonized part and it wont affect that much

Fruiting is better in cooler temperatures. In fact, temperature drop and increased fresh air is what can trigger a mushroom to fruit! If it's stalled, look up the preferred conditions for the mushrooms you are growing and adjust accordingly.

how do the mycelium breath in your bag? How wet do you want the substrate, in a bag (1), or in a plastic container (2).
@punkyroo
@punkyroo 4 жыл бұрын
The myco bags have a small filter patch for air exchange... but mycelium growth requires very little fresh air. In fact, too much will trigger fruiting. In either case, the substrate should be thoroughly moist. Not dripping wet.

@punkyroo
@punkyroo 4 жыл бұрын
Getting the bags in a cooler location and making sure they have lots of fresh air. Cut the bags in a couple of places. The mycelium will sense the holes in the bag (where there is lots of fresh air) and begin producing pins that will eventually grow fruits.
@12deathguard
@12deathguard 3 жыл бұрын
You're spawning mushrooms straight out of the grain bag? I think most people would take that grain and add it to some substrate. Like a monotub situation.
@jasonlarsen4945
@jasonlarsen4945 3 жыл бұрын
If you have long mushroom bags, about double the substrate in the one in the video, and they are about 50% colonized, on one end, and still spreading toward the uncolonized end, but the colonized end is looking like it's ready to fruit, can you cut holes and start fruiting. Or do you have to wait until the whole block is mostly colonized?
@ashsherman
@ashsherman 3 жыл бұрын
From what i know, if you see mushrooms starting to grow, start fruiting. If u gotta, just seperate the parts that just would not colonize. I run into this issue with grain jars over bags, but much of the time when i did still use glass, i would just toss what the mycelium had zero interest in eating . It made me think something was wrong with the area it wouldnt go in. BAGS ARE FAR better to me as it's so much easier to evenly mix up. Grain to grain is much harder (i dont have a laminar flow hood or a sealer so i must cut the bag to use grain or AGAR and that is risky but not impossible)

@jasonjanes3256

Some look at Pinning on the sides of the substrate as negative - as the mushroom is not being channeled "up" but yes, there little fruits testing expansion potential - So don't let light on the sides too much - but still keep the light indirect - how ? black bottom or black tray to block the light and keeping moisture high 85% relative - meaning if the temperature changes, so does the humidity - so keep temps balanced just a few degrees lower during fruiting is fine, that way you can propagate quickly without needing foggers ect . . .
