How to tell which mushrooms are safe to eat and which mushrooms are poisonous. I did not talk much about the death cap mushroom in this video, but one thing that I should have mentioned is that it is white in appearance and brown underneath, making it harder to tell apart from common field mushrooms.
From what I understand the death cap mushroom has a much rounder dome at the top and a smoother appearance but it is the location in which it grows, predominately under trees that is the reason that I will never eat a mushroom that is growing under a tree.

Great video, love the sentiment, but I fear there are some ideas here that are just myths. When a mushroom grows near trees it means its mycorrhizal, it formed a bond with the tree and they live in symbiosis, this by itself tells you very little about how edible a mushroom is, rather it helps identify the specific species, as they all have particular growth habits. The color of a mushroom is also not a good indicator of a quality mushroom to eat, there are thought to be millions of different species of mushrooms and the vast majority aren't known to be safe or not. Firstly you should find a type of mushroom you'd like to eat that you're aware grows in your area of hunting, then find out the taxonomy and morphology of that particular species (basically the way it grows and what it looks like and how it smells specifically) then study that specific mushroom's look alikes and find all their distinguishing characteristics. Otherwise you may just find a very toxic mushroom that fits these qualities and end up poisoned. There is a giant amount of information that grows daily available about mushrooms in your area, study hard and pick wisely.

You have to be careful of "Yellow stainers" too Robbie. They are just like the field mushroom, but they stain yellow when you rub them with your finger nail. They won't kill you, but if you eat them they can make you sick and give you the runs.

Great vid Robbie! im a massive fan of mushrooms also! I would just add if you are looking at what you think are field mushrooms but not sure just give them a scratch, if they go yellow leave them alone, white gills are another good sign they are no good. As well as field mushrooms im a big fan of the pine ( saffron milk cap) slippery jacks, (got some sautéing ATM) and chiodini, (by far the best tasting of all but harder to find.) Sautéing them in garlic, olive oil and fresh parsley is also in my opinion a better way to get the best flavour out of them. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for great mushy tips. I was coming home this morning from a run and encountered mushrooms growing in a small nature-strip. No trees around. Looked like a mushroom and smelt like a mushroom. When I trimmed the stem, though, the inside had a yellowish tinge. My wife said not to eat them, so I didn't. Store-bought ones don't have this yellow tinge. What do you reckon?
@SWSPK
@SWSPK 3 жыл бұрын
I know this is 6 months later, and I am very new to mushroom hunting, but there are species of field mushroom known as yellow stainers. As far as I've seen they stain quite a bright yellow instead of just the slight tinge, but better safe than sorry. Although not to everyone, they can have negative effects (stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, sweating and diarrhoea).

Deadly poisonous Amanitas are easy to identify, so are deadly galerinas. Most good edible mushrooms grow in the woods or directly on wood. It's very easy to spot amanitas and simply avoid them. There are tons of different agaricus mushrooms that grow in fields, they can be very tricky to identify. This video actually contains pretty bad mushroom hunting advice and perpetuates the general public's mushroom phobia.

Don't quote me if you die, but I heard that if you can peel them, they are a mushroom. Heard this from a so-called expert on TV. I would stick with the brown gills and familiar smell. Hi Robbie have you found mushrooms growing in a "Fairy Circle"? We have several times, thought it was an old wives tail but it is true. Also, I was taught that if you can peel the shin on the hood right from the edge to the centre of the hood and not have the skin continually breaking in small pieces, you a mushroom not a toad. We have also picked mushrooms too big and tough to eat(dinner plate size), just left them for the cattle and goats. Enjoy but continue to be careful!

@@robbiefishing it’s common actually in field mushrooms, they get worms and insect lava in the stems, my granny use to take me mushrooming and we use to pick ones under the trees but she grew up in the hard times after ww2 so they use to pick mushrooms just for food to eat so she knew what she was looking for, she would always say (it may be different for other area’s) if it’s a young mushroom and it’s pink underneath and you can easily peel the skin off it’s safe, if it’s white underneath and you can peel the skin off it’s probably safe but don’t take the risk and if it’s yellow or orange don’t touch it, and in my local area anything with brown gills is good. Mushrooming can be good fun but local knowledge is the real key

Your vid is quite apropos! The bloke that is camping at our place atm, is a retired samaritan builder. He went for a walk yesterday, he picked a big bunch of brown mushrooms, on the side of the road. He brought a tub to us. I took 1 look and said, 'NO good!' Dad pulls his,' I'm older than you card, been picking mushrooms since I was a kid in the 40s blah blah!' I still said, 'These are still no good! I can tell by the shape of them!' The looked LIKE Swiss Brown/Field mushrooms, but have a more dome shaped cap, thinner stem, and sun burnt easily. But the BIGGEST kicker, was the SMELL! These false brown/field mushrooms REEK of IODINE! Dad still wasn't convinced as they did NOT stain yellow, (as some of the others do!) But he peeled 1, and left it to oxidise for a few mins! THEN he smelt it! He also tried cooking 1 piece, & the whole kitchen stunk of iodine! I told our guest to chuck them immediately, & he did! These 1s often grow in big CLUMPS! I saw some at a local park on Sat. Knew they were crap straight away! As to growing under trees, there are many EDIBLE species that grow under trees! I often used to get BIG horse/champignons under river red gums, and slippery jacks under pines. Orange chantarelles also! Used to pick morels around central Vic as well, that look like an upside down pine cone on a stick! But your guide lines are sound! Also under the fauna/flora guarantee act, you aren't supposed to pick wild mushrooms from public land! (Private land obviously, doesn't count!)

But oyster type mushrooms grow on trees, and tree bases? Only ones told on ground around trees and bases//roots ect.. are also oyster and morels, but others no. Even if look like yellow or brown oaks they are evil twin lol. Oyster mushrooms most don't have evil twin lol

@@robbiefishing, did you hear about the mushroom that was the life of the party? He was a fungi. On a more serious note. A mate and l once collected several buckets of beautiful looking mushrooms from an otherwise bare paddock. However once we started cooking them they turned a bright yellow. After a little research, they are actually are called yellow stainers, and do contain a poison that can be activated by heat. Please take care, and don't eat the yellow stainers.

Tip ….take a little mirror with you and look under the cap , kicking and pulling every mushroom out of the ground just ruins them producing in the future , you said there wasn’t many around. , even more reason to leave them alone and not destroy them , great advice on not taking what you don’t know is edible and if your in doubt leave it alone as well , responsible foraging take what we need and not take every thing or they can’t not reproduce anymore , the older ones release there spore so we foragers can come back again and enjoy in the future , gets annoying seeing people just bust them up for no reason and wonder why there is none next time they go out.

Everyone be careful with picking any mushroom that has not yet opened, certain dangerous amanita species will look exactly the same.. I personally don’t think this video is a good representation of safe picking and suggest anyone who is going to pick and eat their own harvest do there own research on the particular mushroom you are looking for. Not just a “field mushroom”. Happy hunting’s 😊
