Thanks for sacrificing such nice coins to teach us about the use of acids to verify precious metals.
@gmc97537 жыл бұрын
You could get a scratch stone used for testing precious metals. You just scratch the edge of the bar against the stone to get a line of metal powder and put the acid on the stone. That way, no acid spot on the bar. If it's just silver plated, it will also detect if there's copper under the silver plate.

is this acid test destructive to the silver coins and bars?
@AbuserTube9 жыл бұрын
I don't like to do destructive testing on my coins and bars. You can use an accurate scale to see if it's exactly the weight that it should be, plus use a neodymium magnet to test if it's real. Best is to buy from a trusted dealer.
@Knightyme8 жыл бұрын
+AbuserTube Specific gravity tests are also very effective, worst that happens is the metal gets wet. Magnet is effective if a fake is not copper core, as the diamagnetic effect is similar. Agree with trusted dealer, everyone (interested in precious metals) should know their local bullion and coin dealers.
@AbuserTube8 жыл бұрын
Lord Knightyme True, but if the core is copper, then the weight would be wrong for the size of the coin or bar. So if you do both, weighing it and the magnet test, it should get rid of at least most fakes.

Thanks for showing us how to test for silver. I bought 4 one Troy ounce silver on Ebay and I have no way of testing them out. I looked to see if they had 100 ratings and read the feedbacks. I can only trust them. My dad told me that pure silver is softer and melts faster. I have no clue. He also said that they turn black over time in jewelries. Now a days I don't know my true silver . Some of the bracelets and earring and rings I purchased as gifts . They turn black overtime. I was told that was real silver. There was 2 item that turned greenish over time. I was told that was not pure silver. It was probably mixed with alloy or zinc.

@agredo9 жыл бұрын
so how much the acid destroy the value of the real silver?
@Knightyme8 жыл бұрын
+Andres Agredo Pretty much $0 lost on the spot price (current price at the time, typically updated every 30-60 minutes while stock market is open). 1oz of silver is still 1oz of silver after the acid test. I think you are asking about what is called numismatic value (typically coins or rarer sought out bars), and premium, being the amount someone will pay over the spot price of silver, in that case you can say bye bye to that, but the actual metal value remains. Some real rare bars can be many times the spot price, 10x is not uncommon. Let's say the spot price is $21 (around the current Australian $ for 1 oz silver), and I have a coin or bar from a respected mint, Perth Mint in Australia or Royal Canadian, in, well Canada, I would probably pay a good $9 more, for a total of $30 for that ounce of silver. Before the acid test I could get $30 back for that bar, after the acid test, $21 or the spot price, as the numismatic / premium value is gone.

Explosive Diarrhoea I dont think the man is silly at all. here's why unless you have expensive xray equipment you have absolutely no way other than acid to detect counterfeit silver or gold. sure you can ping it you can magnet test it but that doesn't give you purity test so how do you suppose you re going to know other wise? my advice stop buying gold and silver for collectibility and buy for its content not it's looks. because when you get ready to sell that how is it you suppose the people buying are going to test it. it's silly not to test it
