How To Test A Laptop Charger With A Multimeter | Without Multimeter | Laptop Not Turning On
In this KZfaq Video Tutorial I show you how to test a laptop charger with a multimeter. At the end of the video I also show you how to test a laptop charger without multimeter, by using a universal laptop charger.
This is the Acer Aspire E1 V5WE2 (aka Acer Aspire E1 572). On pressing the power button, there is no activity, no led, no fan sniping, so the first thing to check for is the power source, i.e the charger.

Many thanks for sharing, I was trying to work out if my son's gaming wheel was broken or if just the power adapter and remembered I had one of those all-purpose style laptop chargers as you show in the video. Plugged it in and the wheel came to life! £12 for a new charger vs £200+ for a new wheel 🙂 many many thanks

I thank you for the information on how to test my PS. I saw your original video and yes sir you have come a long way. I could barely hear the original. I believe my statement was "Get a Microphone" Luck was with me, this video was right below it. Thank you for hanging in there. We need all the help we can get.

Thank you very very much! I didn't know the multimeter's metallic part wasn't reaching the other end and thought my charger was dead, adding the extender proved me wrong! Now I just need to figure what is keeping my laptop from booting.

Good tutorial on testing an existing charger. Thanks for that. I checked it out to double-check that the way I was thinking of testing mine was the way you did (it was). I was just explaining to a college class that replacement batteries and replacement chargers are the two hidden costs of owning a laptop. Two things, though: The video title includes the words "Without Multimeter," but you don't provide any significant information on testing a charger without a multimeter. ???? It would be good to mention while you suggest that universal charger at the end of the video that it WON'T actually work with any laptop just because it has matching voltage and the correct tip. My laptop, for instance, an ASUS ROG machine, would eat that thing for breakfast. It's requirement of a 9.23 amp (180 watt) power supply would be so far beyond that thing's spec that it could cause...shall we say...undesirable results. For instance, I once used a 90 watt supply by mistake on an older ASUS ROG laptop that required a 150 watt supply. Within a few days, the wire insulation just before the tip had heated up and softened almost to the point of melting. I suspect that if I used a similar adapter on my current machine, it might actually catch fire. Electrolytic capacitors inside it might explode fairly spectacularly. It might be fun, but let's just say I have to plans to try it on my own equipment!

Thank you for the help. My adaptor plug was only giving me a reading or 5.48 volts. I went through two identical power supplys trying to solve the issue. They are universal and are supposed to come with the adaptor ends to fit into your laptop, bit the new one I bought did not. So I used the one from my old charger because it was exactly the same end piece. Anyway this new charger also did not power uo my laptop. I decided it must be the adaptor piece then, so I found your video and tested it out. Sure enough that is the issue. Something in it must have fried as it only sends 5.48 volts out. Not enough to power my laptop. So it wasnt the actual block, it was the adaptor head that just burnt out. I would have just bought another charger or a brand new laptop if you didnt post this, so thank you. I will definetly be checking out more of your videos. Hope your staying safe out there ✌ ✝ ❤

My laptop was fully charged and it was plugged in when it suddenly shut off completely and won't turn on, is it because of the charger? Or is there something to do with the motherboard?

thanks for the vid but I have some questions. On 3:50 you say "we can test this non-working laptop charger which gets a reading of 19.5V on a 19V charger", but isn't that a CORRECT reading? You said between 18.24 and 19.76 right? I don't understand both this nor why you proceed to test the AC saying "since the adapter doesn't work" if the multimeter was showing 19.50 :(

I was getting funky readings from my charger when verifying output voltage out of curiosity, but turns out the multimeter battery was bad. I'll be looking into your model of multimeter, That's what happens with a cheap multimeter I bought... they test for voltage from other things, but not themselves. lol

I have a question. If a touch exactly the pin with the red wire it gives me 5 volt. If I just let the red wire touch the inside “walls” of the plug without touching the pin it gives me 19v. Does it mean that my adapter is faulty or can I consider the second reading correct?

That would depend on how the plug is supposed to be wired. It's probably correct, but there are a few tests you can try. Set your multimeter to test continuity. Next... 1. Touch one probe to the pin and the other to the inside walls of the plug. If you get continuity, obviously that means they are both wired together. 2. Touch one probe to the inside wall of the plug, and the other to the outside jacket. If the inside wall and the pin should be wired together, you should not get continuity on this test. 3. On the laptop, itself, if you can, touch the probes to the surfaces those two contacts will touch. Those should also not show continuity. 4. This one is the best and most dependable test, but requires you to find a known-good charger for your laptop. If you can get your hands on that, test continuity between the pin and the inside wall of the known good charger. If you get continuity, there, then you're all set.

Yes and it's within the 4% tolerance... which would be +/-0.76V? I'm confused as well as to why it's bad. I really want to know as my charge says about the same. **edit: I think it's just the accent, he's saying "known working" rather than "not working". So it's all good :)

Not on everything, I have switched to Amazon for many things, in fact I buy more from Amazon than Ebay these days. I feel they have better customer service and since I use prime, I almost only buy prime next day, and sometimes same day delivery, really handy.
