we have our smoke detectors mounted on the wall but they don't seem to react; the battery's intact and pressing the test button works, but whenever we forget to watch over the stove and we smell smoke it doesn't react.

That's the problem. What is he testing? He is testing that when he presses the button it makes a noise. He needs to test if it actually starts working when the smoke is happens. I find out that there're 2 types of fire alarms. Radioactive with americanium isotop and not radioactive. In my house all radioactive and I'd like get rid of them. The problem is the other seems less sensitive.

Did not understand..did you say that you push the button...the beep is what tells you it is fine, right?...you did not say that...had to go and look at another video...thank you...just want to say that so that you are clear...

Shouldn’t a smoke detector be tested with smoke ? Pressing the button just seems to indicate the battery is still good.

this is a pseudo test which says, that device thinks it is setup correctly, but that test doesn't make any guarantee if it works when smoke or not.
