In this video, we will see How to test a Transformer with a digital multimeter. The transformer testing method is very simple and it requires only a multimeter to test the transformer. I will also explain how to identify primary and secondary winding of a isolation step up or step down transformer.
I will request you to watch the complete tutorial video of the Transformer testing but you can also jump to any topic by click on the following Time Stamps:
00:49 How to identify the primary and secondary [high voltage & low voltage] windings.
05:07 How to check the transformer using a multimeter
07:42 How to calculate the turns ratio of a transformer

Here I have used an isolation step down transformer. For a good transformer, the resistance of the windings should not be infinite and the resistance between the core and both windings should be infinite.
In the video, I have shown the transformer testing method in simple steps so that you can easily follow the steps while testing an isolation transformer.

Sir Thankyou for a great video. I built a colour organ about 50 years ago and found it at my moms estate and for some reason couldn't remember the parts. Now I can test the transformer and rebuild it for my grandchildren. Thankyou for making it easy to understand what you where teaching. God bless.

Yessir. Otherwise known as a center tapped coil, also there will be times you'll see a transformer that has multiple taps. Sometimes on primary sometimes on secondary. Or both. Depending on the application the transformer originates from.
@bparker86

And those taps can be identified in order by simply using the same method that the kind sir that made the video pointed out.

@@TechStudyCell Thanks for putting up videos that get directly to the point without any lectures or confusing theories. I've also asked you a question on one of your videos regarding identifying leads on a unknown power transformer. I've looked everywhere and there are information but the info they are providing are confusing, almost as if i need to study electronics or engineering to understand, now for a FYIer or 'home brewer' like myself and i'm sure there are a lot of other people like me out there, how the heck do you ID an unknown power transformer like the one I have. Almost all the people that talk about it have special equipment to provide or controlled electricity coming to the PT, but I do not. All i have is a multimeter.

If you kindly answer the following question I have a transform from 220V to 100v and as I said before, I am not sure which side is the primary and which is the secondary. My question: if I plug one side to 110v and measure the voltage at the other side, if it is below 110v then this side is the primary and if it is greater than 110 it is the secondary. Is this a correct way to determine which is which.
@TechStudyCell
@TechStudyCell 4 жыл бұрын
The coil can be damage if you apply high voltage at secondary. So check the coil resistance. For step down transformer the primary coil has higher resistance and secondary coil has lower resistance.

let me understand this... so... You train your techs based on shit that you find on you tube LOL...... My god and to boot, You can't spell "SERVICE TECH'S" correctly Mate, i don't know what to tell you . it's not like this is a lecture on Thevenin's theorem or perhaps Fourier Transform, this is basic standard bullshit resistance testing that i knew when i was literally 6 years old (i'm now 48) it's what my 14 year old nephew knows after only having been in electronics for 6 months approx. Now.. You seem to be (i won't use the word PROFESSIONAL) an industry person who is conducting a business jesus mate, ... if you need a you tube video to show you how to measure resistance or to test a transformer maybe you shouldn't be in that line of work yeah.. I'm just kinda speechless that you would actually come here and say that you're going to use this to train your techs - No disrespect to the author of the video - and it was a good video and if you were a hobbyist or starting out i wouldn't say anything LOL but Jeez mate, You're a business who has many tech's under you and.. I bet they don't even know that you didn't know this WOW.. I really don't know what to say (I'm trying hard not to be rude, but it is what it is ) but even given that and we all start somewhere, you still came on here and said it LOL that's the funniest part anyway .... yeah, those are my thoughts it's not a good look mate
