Need to learn how to test an appliance capacitor for your refrigerator, washer, dishwasher or microwave? We have you covered! When your capacitor fails it can cause the motor or compressor to not run or your microwave to not heat.
Appliance capacitors come in different shapes and sizes depending on their functions and what appliances they are found in. But they all do the same thing. They store and release electricity.
- Refrigerator run capacitors are commonly used on compressor start relays to help the compressor motor run more efficiently.
- Microwaves use a high voltage capacitor to help supply power to the magnetron.
- Washing machines commonly use a start capacitor on the drive motor to help start the motor or a run capacitor to help the motor to run more efficiently.
- Dishwashers commonly use a run capacitor on the circulation motor to help the motor to run more efficiently.

TY for the video. ... (Refrigerator broke, supposedly fixed, broke 2 months later, in storage for a long time.) *Frigidaire Refrigerator FSC23F7DW8:* My run capacitor is labeled: -5% +10% 250VAC/B 15µF... the multimeter reading was 15.84... it's good. But, I get the nasty suspicion it is the wrong part, anyway... *PN: 297286803.* (The start relay was definitely bad.) Both came from an Electrolux kit I was sold (a long time ago) but I think it was the wrong kit. (Relay is in the dump, can't check that part.) OEM, (original), parts are long gone. :-) *Will the PN: 297286803 work properly?* I connected a 3-1 hard start with that run capacitor, but the refrigerator and freezer stayed at about 50-55 degrees. Now, even with that part taken off, both are still at that temperature. (EDIT Heck, maybe I bought the wrong 3-1.) Your PN is: Run Capacitor; Part # PD00000334 (/ Mfg # 218909913) I don't know the correct OEM part number! I have another kit coming today, and now I am 100% sure that it is wrong: Amazon: NEW UPGRADED W10613606 Refrigerator Compressor Start Relay and Capacitor by BlueStars - Exact Fit for Whirlpool KitchenAid Kenmore Refrigerators - Replaces W10416065 PS8746522 67003186 ... I must have been sleepy! Heh heh! The only other things of note is: I replaced the defrost thermostat. About 3-4 inches in diameter of ice builds up on the copper tubing leading into the evaporator coil, but it stops at the (silver) tubing where it begins to be finned. _SO, I guess I have more troubleshooting to do! Back to square one!_

@@philgar7786 The partial frost (3-4 inches) pattern on the evaporator coil usually indicates a compressor or sealed system problem. The would need to be repaired by a professional and may not be worth the cost to repair.

@@PartsDr I had already spoken to a repairman about a diagnosis. Been playing with this on and off for a couple of weeks or so. I did realize that symptom was unusual for the more common problems. - _Yeah, it's just ice at the very top on the tubing only, not the whole coil._ - I forgot to mention I found a pin-hole leak in a copper tube near the compressor. I was wondering if it was for the water line leading up to the water filter, because that is where it heads, up the back, toward the top. Anyway, it does not matter. I am going to let him perform a diagnosis, even though I just bought a new multimeter and was going to retest some things. (A lead on my old one broke.) And, yes, if it's serious, it's trash. I will part out interior parts for sale and sell the rest to a rebuild shop (for whatever) if anyone wants it, or give it to them. I know the junkyard will take it! :-) *_Thank you very much for the reply! Take care!_*

Super easy to understand. Thanks for going over all the variables. Helpful if you added one more: can a capacitor passes the continuity test but fail the capacitance test?
@PartsDr
@PartsDr 11 ай бұрын
Thank you for the feedback. Yes, it is possible for the capacitor to pass the continuity test but fail the capacitance test. The capacitor could be storing and release energy but not the right amount.

When I did a continuity test on my capacitor, I switched the multimeter leads and the multimeter beeped each time, where as when he tested the capacitors he only got one beep after switching the leads. Does my test suggest my capacitor is good or no good?

Hi there ~ fantastic video! I do have a question: I'm testing a run capacitor for a refrigerator and I followed your instructions for testing capacitance (I got readings within the micro farid rating listed on the unit). However, when I attempted to test the continuity, I kept getting OL and no beep. Does that mean the capacitor is bad?
@PartsDr
@PartsDr 2 жыл бұрын
The capacitance test is the more accurate test, so that should mean that the capacitor is good.

They all vary. You would need to look at the numbers on the capacitor as shown at 1:23

Sir may I ask, if I have a motor starting capacitor for "Dough Mixer" of 80µF 10+20% 270V, and I have a reading of 85µF, shall I say that the capacitor is in excellent condition?

Typically you will need to use a capacitor with the same specifications as the original. Even better, search with your refrigerators model number on our website partsdr.com and you can find the exact replacement from the manufacture for your model.
