In this video I will show you how to operate the Optical Power Meter function of your cheap tester from Amazon. I know not everyone likes the super cheap knockoff, so I will link several brands you can look at and decide which one you like the look of. If you use any of these links it supports my channel and I benefit, but don't feel obligated to use them of course.
The Nofaya Tester in this video: amzn.to/3C77jhH
A Jonard Brand Tester: amzn.to/45z10Be
The Fluke Tester: amzn.to/45BfS1N
Another Cheap Knockoff: amzn.to/3WFWnkO
My favorite patch cords: amzn.to/3WDv9ew
All manner of couplers: amzn.to/3C2IzqW
I think once you see the prices you'll agree the cheapo is the way to go until you are making that government money.

I have another rack build video almost ready for everyone, but in the interest of keeping content dropping I am doing a couple small videos until that one is ready. If you have a request for something I can show you or something you want to see built, let me know. Thanks!

Great video! My new company provided me with this same tester. And i was gaving toruble getting an accurate db loss. I am used to using the fluke twster and always calibrated it before testing. I suggesting that problem is probably that we need to calibrate before use. Thanks for clearing that up and great demonstration.

I work for a fiber to the home isp. Our specs are usually anything below -22db light. This is however light loss over 10s of miles of fiber. At the source we usually measure -9 / -11.

That's really interesting. We usually put our point of presence in a condo basement and run the fibers to the units, I have always wanted to go through the city conduits but that's for a larger company to tackle :) Sounds fun to me.

Why does my NIU box have 500 written inside of the box with a permanent marker? They didn’t write a negative number inside. Idk if that’s good or bad I have Google fiber.

That was a good procedure for validating the fiber connections. I know it should be obvious, but I have seen one network engineer look for the light, with his eyes, on 1310nm fiber. Don't do that!

Great video thanks for share your knowledge with us! When would you use something called an OTDR launch cable for testing? Thanks again I subscribed right away to your content
@tciproductions
@tciproductions 6 ай бұрын
An OTDR works by sending a series of light flashes down your fiber, there should be a certain minimum length for this to work well and detect reflection events. The launch cable also provides you a known good section in your graph at the start and finish, allowing you to detect bad end-faces and splices near the start and finish of your strand. Without a launch cable you'll have some difficulty detecting defects at the ends of the strand.

Standard loss on a connector is .25db. Your bulkhead scenario would only have 1db loss.

Great video! Very easy to follow! How do you find the tester itself? My boss won’t purchase a tester for fibre or even a proper copper pair tester for the company. I want to ensure I can do pre and post installation tests of fibres I’ve hauled. The tester you’re using there is a reasonable price tag for something I am going to buy personally. Is it reliable and decent quality for the price?
@tciproductions
@tciproductions 9 ай бұрын
For personal usage its good enough I think. At that price you aren't risking too much. A bigger one that prints out reports or does tier 2 might be needed on certain jobs but for most common office spaces this would be plenty.

Really interesting video! What's the difference between the testers mention here and an OTDR? As I understand it, with an ODTR you can test a fibre with out a light source at the other end??
@tciproductions
@tciproductions 6 ай бұрын
An OTDR flashes light pulses down the fiber and measures how much is reflected back and where. You would use that to determine where along the fiber path you have a bad bend, or dirty coupler, or some other issue where light can't get past but you aren't sure where. In my experience the fiber is always broken if this happens, but it can help locate the fault so you can splice in a fix. The light source measurements are often included if the OTDR you have has a remote side device - say a LanTek IV for instance.

generally, we use multi-mode as long as it will work which is generally 400 Meters because SFP are just cheaper and you get the 10 G between buildings
@tciproductions
@tciproductions Жыл бұрын
That's true, it will go pretty far. I learned under an old greybeard and its always just stuck for me to use MM within range of servers and nics, and SM for inter-building/campus links.
@heselmas
@heselmas Жыл бұрын
We use single mode. Cheaper and better cable, less issues with tight bends, extend FTTH, unlimited speed, weld buildings together and we love to use bidi tranceivers. SFP+ for singlemode is not expensive. OM5 cable is expensive. 🙂

Hi, I've been looking into this tester for a while but have a question. Is it possible to unscrew the fiber SC ports and change them? I would like to have ports that fits LC connector
@tciproductions
@tciproductions 4 ай бұрын
The one that I have does not have a removable piece to change to LC, I also wish it had that.
